    Carbonation of alkaline paper mill waste to reduce CO2 greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere

    International audienceThe global warming of Earth's near-surface, air and oceans in recent decades is a direct consequence of anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere such as CO2, CH4, N2O and CFCs. The CO2 emissions contribute approximately 60% to this climate change. This study investigates experimentally the aqueous carbonation mechanisms of an alkaline paper mill waste containing about 55 wt% portlandite (Ca(OH)2) as a possible mineralogical CO2 sequestration process. The overall carbonation reaction includes the following steps: (1) Ca release from portlandite dissolution, (2) CO2 dissolution in water and (3) CaCO3 precipitation. This CO2 sequestration mechanism was supported by geochemical modelling of final solutions using PHREEQC software, and observations by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction of final reaction products. According to the experimental protocol, the system proposed would favour the total capture of approx. 218 kg of CO2 into stable calcite/ton of paper waste, independently of initial CO2 pressure. The final product from the carbonation process is a calcite (ca. 100 wt%)-water dispersion. Indeed, the total captured CO2 mineralized as calcite could be stored in degraded soils or even used for diverse industrial applications. This result demonstrates the possibility of using the alkaline liquid–solid waste for CO2 mitigation and reduction of greenhouse effect gases into the atmosphere

    Mineral sequestration of CO2 by aqueous carbonation of coal combustion fly-ash

    International audienceThe increasing CO2 concentration in the Earth's atmosphere, mainly caused by fossil fuel combustion, has led to concerns about global warming. A technology that could possibly contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions is the in-situ mineral sequestration (long term geological storage) or the ex-situ mineral sequestration (controlled industrial reactors) of CO2. In the present study, we propose to use coal combustion fly-ash, an industrial waste that contains about 4.1 wt.% of lime (CaO), to sequester carbon dioxide by aqueous carbonation. The carbonation reaction was carried out in two successive chemical reactions, first, the irreversible hydration of lime. CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2 second, the spontaneous carbonation of calcium hydroxide suspension. Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O A significant CaO–CaCO3 chemical transformation (approximately 82% of carbonation efficiency) was estimated by pressure-mass balance after 2 h of reaction at 30 °C. In addition, the qualitative comparison of X-ray diffraction spectra for reactants and products revealed a complete CaO–CaCO3 conversion. The carbonation efficiency of CaO was independent on the initial pressure of CO2 (10, 20, 30 and 40 bar) and it was not significantly affected by reaction temperature (room temperature “20–25”, 30 and 60 °C) and by fly-ash dose (50, 100, 150 g). The kinetic data demonstrated that the initial rate of CO2 transfer was enhanced by carbonation process for our experiments. The precipitate calcium carbonate was characterized by isolated micrometric particles and micrometric agglomerates of calcite (SEM observations). Finally, the geochemical modelling using PHREEQC software indicated that the final solutions (i.e. after reaction) are supersaturated with respect to calcium carbonate (0.7 ≤ saturation index ≤ 1.1). This experimental study demonstrates that 1 ton of fly-ash could sequester up to 26 kg of CO2, i.e. 38.18 ton of fly-ash per ton of CO2 sequestered. This confirms the possibility to use this alkaline residue for CO2 mitigation

    Development of electric resistance sintering process for the fabrication of hard metals: Processing, microstructure and mechanical properties

    This work presents the development of the Electrical Resistance Sintering (ERS) process for the fabrication of hard metals. The compositions of the materials produced were WC with 6 and 10 wt% of Co. In addition to the specific characteristics of the technology, the characterization of the produced parts is presented and compared to materials obtained by conventional processes. The parts produced by ERS present densities comparable to the ones obtained by conventional methods. The microstructural comparison shows a considerable grain size reduction in the ERS materials which consequently brings a hardness increase. ERS materials show similar fracture toughness to conventional ones. The very fast sintering allows performing the process without any protective atmosphere, therefore making this process very attractive for the production of materials that need to be sintered under non-oxidising environments. The total duration of the cycle, including heating, holding time and cooling is few seconds.     Análisis de la experiencia del equipo de atención prehospitalaria en emergencias paliativas

    La atención prehospitalaria a pacientes paliativos, responsable de los cuidados fuera del ámbito hospitalario, tiene como objetivo la estabilización clínica y tratamiento sintomático, así como promocionar la muerte digna en su domicilio. Objetivos: Los objetivos de este trabajo han sido conocer la documentación actual de la asistencia prehospitalaria en emergencias paliativas y valorar lanecessidad de formación de cuidados paliativos en emergencias. Metodologia: La metodología empleada ha sido la revisión bibliográfica de bases de datos biosanitarias como Scielo, PubMed, Cochane Plus, etc…, y el Plan Andaluz de Cuidados Paliativos.Resultados: En la actualidad no existen equipos especializados en Emergencias Paliativas dedicados exclusivamente a esta área, aunque en algunas comunidades españolas existen equipos de Atención Primaria domiciliaria. Se ha demostrado que su existencia aumenta las probabilidades de fallecimiento en el domicilio y reducen la carga de los síntomas y es estrés de los cuidadores. Los datos demuestran que el cuidado a paciente con cáncer terminal son relevantes para la emergencia médica. Estos, necesitan ayuda basándose en principios de cuidados paliativos y es necesaria la cooperación interdisciplinar entre las áreas de emergencia médica y paliativa. Conclusión: Podemos afirmar, que sería necesaria más investigación para valorar si equipos con mayor formación en área paliativa son más eficaces en la prestación de cuidados a estos pacientes. También se verifica una falta de estudios en emergencias paliativas

    Changes in plasma fatty acid composition are associated with improvements in obesity and related metabolic disorders: A therapeutic approach to overweight adolescents

    Background & aims: In recent years, obesity has reached alarming levels among children and adolescents. The study of plasma fatty acid (FA) composition, as a reflection of diet, and its associations with other parameters, that are closely linked to obesity and the cardiometabolic profile, may be useful for setting nutritional goals for obesity treatment and prevention. This study explored the relationship between plasma FA levels and body fat and cardiometabolic risk markers, in overweight adolescents. Methods: A multidisciplinary weight loss program was followed by 127 overweight and obese adolescents aged 12-17 years old. Plasma FA composition, anthropometric indicators of adiposity and biochemical parameters were analyzed at baseline, two months (the end of the intensive intervention phase) and six months (the end of the extensive phase). Results: While saturated fatty acid (SFA) and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels decreased significantly during the intervention, monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and n-3 PUFA showed the opposite trend. The decrease in SFA C14:0 was associated with a reduction in total and LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and insulin. The increase in MUFAs, especially C18:1n-9, was related to a reduction in weight, fat mass, fat mass index and glucose. Regarding PUFAs, changes in the n-3 series were not associated with any of the parameters studied, whereas the reduction in n-6 PUFA5 was directly related to weight, fat mass, total and HDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein Al, glucose and insulin, and inversely associated with diastolic blood pressure. The adolescents with greater weight loss presented significant changes in MUFAs, n-6 PUFA5 and C14:0. Conclusions: Modifications in plasma FA composition were associated with adiposity reduction and cardiometabolic profile improvement in an anti-obesity program aimed at adolescents. The changes observed in FA composition were related to the success of the treatment, since the individuals most affected by these variations were those who presented the greatest weight loss

    The Gaia-ESO Survey: Chromospheric Emission, Accretion Properties, and Rotation in γ\gamma Velorum and Chamaeleon I

    We use the fundamental parameters delivered by the GES consortium in the first internal data release to select the members of γ\gamma Vel and Cha I among the UVES and GIRAFFE spectroscopic observations. A total of 140 γ\gamma Vel members and 74 Cha I members were studied. We calculated stellar luminosities through spectral energy distributions, while stellar masses were derived by comparison with evolutionary tracks. The spectral subtraction of low-activity and slowly rotating templates, which are rotationally broadened to match the vsiniv\sin i of the targets, enabled us to measure the equivalent widths (EWs) and the fluxes in the Hα\alpha and Hβ\beta lines. The Hα\alpha line was also used for identifying accreting objects and for evaluating the mass accretion rate (M˙acc\dot M_{\rm acc}). The distribution of vsiniv\sin i for the members of γ\gamma Vel displays a peak at about 10 km s1^{-1} with a tail toward faster rotators. There is also some indication of a different vsiniv\sin i distribution for the members of its two kinematical populations. Only a handful of stars in γ\gamma Vel display signatures of accretion, while many more accretors were detected in the younger Cha~I. Accreting and active stars occupy two different regions in a TeffT_{\rm eff}-flux diagram and we propose a criterion for distinguishing them. We derive M˙acc\dot M_{\rm acc} in the ranges 101110^{-11}-109M10^{-9} M_\odotyr1^{-1} and 101010^{-10}-107M10^{-7} M_\odotyr1^{-1} for γ\gamma Vel and Cha I accretors, respectively. We find less scatter in the M˙accM\dot M_{\rm acc}-M_\star relation derived through the Hα\alpha EWs, when compared to the Hα\alpha 10%W10\%W diagnostics, in agreement with other authors

    Hidrogenionic potential (pH) of the attractant, trap density and control threshold for Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: tephritidae) on Hamlin oranges in São Paulo central region, Brazil

    This study evaluated the effect of initial pH values of 4.5, 6.5 and 8.5 of the attractant (protein bait) Milhocina® and borax (sodium borate) in the feld, on the capture of fruit flies in McPhail traps, using 1, 2, 4 and 8 traps per hectare, in order to estimate control thresholds in a Hamlin orange grove in the central region of the state of São Paulo. The most abundant fruit fly species was Ceratitis capitata, comprising almost 99% of the fruit flies captured, of which 80% were females. The largest captures of C. capitata were found in traps baited with Milhocina® and borax at pH 8.5. Captures per trap for the four densities were similar, indicating that the population can be estimated with one trap per hectare in areas with high populations. It was found positive relationships between captures of C. capitata and the number of Hamlin oranges damaged, 2 and 3 weeks after capture. It was obtained equations that correlate captures and damage levels which can be used to estimate control thresholds. The average loss caused in Hamlin orange fruits by C. capitata was 2.5 tons per hectare or 7.5% of production.Esta pesquisa teve como objetivos: avaliar o efeito do pH inicial, 4.5; 6.5 e 8.5, do atrativo proteico Milhocina® e bórax (tetraborato de sódio) na captura de moscas-das-frutas em armadilhas McPhail; estudar densidades de armadilhas, 1; 2; 4 e 8 por hectare, para estimar níveis de controle em laranja cv. Hamlin, na região central de São Paulo. A espécie predominante, com 99% das moscas-das-frutas capturadas, foi Ceratitis capitata, sendo 80% de fêmeas. As maiores capturas de C. capitata ocorreram nas armadilhas com Milhocina® e bórax em pH 8.5. As capturas, nas 4 densidades, foram semelhantes, indicando que a população pode ser estimada com uma armadilha por hectare em áreas de altas populações. Houve relações positivas entre capturas de C. capitata e o número de frutos danificados, 2 e 3 semanas após a captura. Assim, foram obtidas equações que relacionam a captura e o dano, possibilitando estimar níveis de controle desse inseto. As perdas médias causadas por C. capitata em laranja cv. Hamlin chegaram a 2,5 toneladas de frutos por hectare ou 7,5% da produção.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
