Direct calculation of the critical Casimir force in a binary fluid

We show that critical Casimir effects can be accessed through direct simulation of a model binary fluid passing through the demixing transition. We work in the semi grand canonical ensemble, in slab geometry, in which the Casimir force appears as the excess of the generalized pressure, P⊥−nμP_{\bot}-n\mu. The excesses of the perpendicular pressure, P⊥P_{\bot}, and of nμn\mu, are individually of much larger amplitude. A critical pressure anisotropy is observed between forces parallel and perpendicular to the confinement direction, which collapses onto a universal scaling function closely related to that of the critical Casimir force

A new species of Neomida Latreille from Colombia, with additional records and a complementary description for Neomida suilla (Champion) (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, Diaperini)

Neomida diminuta sp. n. is described, based on a single male specimen from Colombia, and a redescription of Neomida suilla (Champion) is given. Data on the morphology of the aedeagus for both species, and on the female abdominal terminalia for Neomida suilla are provided. New records of Neomida suilla from Atlantic Forest remnants in the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, Brazil are given

The importance of prognostic factors in the analysis of lung cancer clinical trials has long been recognized. In this paper, many prognostic factors were considered and their comparison between male and female group results were evaluated. The presence of symptoms at the time of diagnosis of lung cancer was not found to be different between women and men in this study. The women had a lower smoking incidence (45.7%) than men (90.6%). Squamous cell carcinoma represented the most common lung malignancy among men (40.6%), whereas adenocarcinoma represented the most frequently diagnosed lung cancer among women (57.1%). On the average, 45% of the patients had advanced disease at the moment of diagnosis.

Trends of systems engineering job postings and their implications for curriculum development

    Get PDF
Recent studies in systems engineering indicate that the design, development, and management of systems will continue increasing in complexity. The foreseen growth is expected as future capabilities require understanding the system and its operating environment, adapting to rapid-changing scenarios, integrating more independent hardware and software elements, coordinating with multiple stakeholders across the system’s lifecycle, among others. To develop the next generation of systems, alignment between industry needs and curricula from higher-education institutions should exist. Therefore, this research contributes to the human capital development of systems engineering in the United States by exploring current job opportunities and their relationship to existing academic offerings in Hispanic-Serving Institutions. The study analyzes job openings from INCOSE’s CAB Members to capture current needs in terms of role description lifecycle experience, tools and methodologies needed in the job market, and it explores the relationship of systems engineering methodologies covered in Hispanic-Serving Institutions. The outcome of this research provides a direction to support the development, adoption, and update of higher-education systems engineering curriculum that aligns with current industry needs

Spacetime positive mass theorems for initial data sets with noncompact boundary

In this paper, we define an energy-momentum vector at the spatial infinity of either asymptotically flat or asymptotically hyperbolic initial data sets carrying a non-compact boundary. Under suitable dominant energy conditions (DECs) imposed both on the interior and along the boundary, we prove the corresponding positive mass inequalities under the assumption that the underlying manifold is spin. In the asymptotically flat case, we also prove a rigidity statement when the energy-momentum vector is lightlike. Our treatment aims to underline both the common features and the differences between the asymptotically Euclidean and hyperbolic settings, especially regarding the boundary DECs.Comment: 41 pages.
