Globalization and Foreign Direct Investment in the Textile, Garment, and Leather Industry

    Get PDF
The subject of this paper is analysis and assessment of foreign direct investment (FDI) as made by transnational corporations in the textile, garment, and leather industry on a world economic scale under conditions of globalization. Significant changes are occurring in the sector and industry structure of global FDI. In terms of the three sectors of the economy, a long-term shift of FDI to the service sector at a cost to investments in manufacturing may be seen. Foreign investments are being made in the textile, garment, and leather industry. They are growing in the long term. However, the dynamics of the FDI streams flowing to this industry is one of the lowest in manufacturing. Over the long term (1990-2007), the share of the textile, garment, and leather industry in global FDI stock decreased from 1.5% to 0.6% in 2007. In spite of the labour-intensive character of this industry, in their bulk, the FDI are destined to the highly developed countries. Znaczące zmiany występują w strukturze sektorowej i gał;ęziowej BIZ. W ukł;adzie trzech sektorów gospodarki obserwuje się dł;ugookresowe przesunięcie BIZ do sektora usł;ug, kosztem inwestycji w przetwórstwo przemysł;owe. The Challenges of Place, Capacity, and Systems Change: The Story of Yes we can!

    Get PDF
    · Yes we can!, a comprehensive community initiative (CCI) funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, was designed to improve educational and economic outcomes within the foundation’s hometown of Battle Creek, Mich. Since 2002, Yes we can! has supported five core strategies designed to trigger the systems changes needed to reduce educational and economic inequities in Battle Creek. · Yes we can! has achieved some important wins to date; for example, more residents are involved, more neighborhoods have stronger neighborhood associations, and more organizations are engaging residents in their decision-making processes. However, the scale of wins remains small, and the targeted systemic changes have not yet emerged. · Some common CCI design elements featured in Yes we can! may have inadvertently bounded its success: a) community building efforts targeted small-scale places, restricting the scale and scope of wins; b) demands for current work competed with building capacities for future work; and c) local partners who were implementing their individual grants struggled to maintain a focus on the larger vision and collective work

Long cycles in graphs containing a 2-factor with many odd components

    Get PDF
We prove a result on the length of a longest cycle in a graph on n vertices that contains a 2-factor and satisfies d(u)+d(c)+d(w)n+2 for every tiple u, v, w of independent vertices. As a corollary we obtain the follwing improvement of a conjectre of Häggkvist (1992): Let G be a 2-connected graph on n vertices where every pair of nonadjacent vertices has degree sum at least n-k and assume G has a 2-factor with at least k+1 odd components. Then G is hamiltonian

    Long distance tracking of birds

    Get PDF
The application of radio telemetry techniques to the long distance tracking of birds is discussed. The types of equipment developed and methods for attachment to a bird are described. The operating range of the radio transmitter receiver system is examined, and methods for acquiring and analyzing the data are explained

Fractal Analysis of Intraflow Unidirectional Delay over W-LAN and W-WAN Environments

    Get PDF
We have analysed unidirectional delay traces of a diverse set of IPv6 microflows routed over W-LAN and W-WAN environments. Using a number of time-domain and frequency-domain estimators we have examined the existence and intensity of long-range dependence in packet delay when viewed as time-series data. The correlation structures of packet delay on bulk TCP data path and UDP flows follow asymptotic decay while Hurst exponent estimates suggest from moderate to strong intensity(H->1)

Wavelet analysis of the seismograms of the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and its application to tsunami early warning

    Get PDF
We applied the wavelet transform in an attempt to detect long-period components early in a seismogram. We analyzed the displacement seismograms of the 26 December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake (Mw = 9.2) and the 28 March 2005 Nias earthquake (Mw = 8.7). Wavelet analysis is able to clearly distinguish the amplitudes of the long-period W phase between the seismograms of the two earthquakes before the S wave reaches the station. It shows that the 2004 earthquake generates a W phase of significantly greater amplitude. This facility has potential application to the rapid identification of truly great earthquakes with high tsunami potential

Open Source Dataset and Machine Learning Techniques for Automatic Recognition of Historical Graffiti

Machine learning techniques are presented for automatic recognition of the historical letters (XI-XVIII centuries) carved on the stoned walls of St.Sophia cathedral in Kyiv (Ukraine). A new image dataset of these carved Glagolitic and Cyrillic letters (CGCL) was assembled and pre-processed for recognition and prediction by machine learning methods. The dataset consists of more than 4000 images for 34 types of letters. The explanatory data analysis of CGCL and notMNIST datasets shown that the carved letters can hardly be differentiated by dimensionality reduction methods, for example, by t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (tSNE) due to the worse letter representation by stone carving in comparison to hand writing. The multinomial logistic regression (MLR) and a 2D convolutional neural network (CNN) models were applied. The MLR model demonstrated the area under curve (AUC) values for receiver operating characteristic (ROC) are not lower than 0.92 and 0.60 for notMNIST and CGCL, respectively. The CNN model gave AUC values close to 0.99 for both notMNIST and CGCL (despite the much smaller size and quality of CGCL in comparison to notMNIST) under condition of the high lossy data augmentation. CGCL dataset was published to be available for the data science community as an open source resource.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for 25th International Conference on Neural Information Processing (ICONIP 2018), 14-16 December, 2018 (Siem Reap, Cambodia

Sexual selection in the Swallow Hirundo rustica - A review

    Get PDF
Darwinian theory of sexual selection and its development up to the present state of knowledge are sketched. The most important results of empirical studies on sexual selection in the Swallow Hirundo rustica are reviewed. The Swallow is a socially monogamous, slightly sexually dimorphic avian species. Long tail streamers are considered as sexual ornaments of males. Female preference for long and symmetric male tails has been inferred on both observational and experimental grounds. Experimental elongation of the tail causes short-term benefits and long-term costs in male reproductive performance. Behavioural consequences of sexual selection acting in the Swallow are discussed. An aerodynamic role of male tail streamers is also considered.Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 dofinansowane zostało ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę
