    Tropical Fish Study in Tahiti, French Polynesia

    In May of 2023, I embarked on an exciting research journey to Moorea, French Polynesia, alongside fellow students and faculty members from the University of Akron and Syracuse University. This expedition was part of the university-sponsored Tropical Vertebrate Biology course, where we delved into the exploration of various tropical species inhabiting the island, including sea urchins, geckos, and my primary focus, the blackspotted rockskipper. My research team, composed of my co-authors and me, was particularly intrigued by the unique refuge-seeking behavior displayed by blackspotted rockskippers. These amphibious fish are renowned for their remarkable ability to inhabit tide pools and rocky beach jetties, swiftly navigating and jumping across these challenging terrains, especially when confronted with predators. Our curiosity led us to question the rapid decision-making processes involved in their behavior and the factors influencing these decisions. In our study, we investigated the refuge preferences of blackspotted rockskippers, with a specific focus on their behavior in the presence of conspecifics (members of the same species). Our findings revealed a significant trend in which rockskippers exhibited a preference for solitude.     Cadherin-7 function in zebrafish development

    Cadherin cell adhesion molecules play crucial roles in vertebrate development. Most studies have focused on examining the functions of classical type I cadherins (e.g., cadherin-2) in the development of vertebrates. Little information is available concerning the function of classical type II cadherins (e.g., cadherin-7) in vertebrate development. We have previously shown that cadherin-7 mRNA exhibits a dynamic expression pattern in the central nervous system and notochord in embryonic zebrafish. To gain insight into the role of cadherin-7 in the formation of these structures, we analyzed their formation in zebrafish embryos injected with cadherin-7-specific antisense morpholino oligonucleotides (MO). Notochord development was severely disrupted in MO-injected embryos, whereas gross defects in the development of the central nervous system were not detected in MO-injected embryos. Our results thus demonstrate that cadherin-7 plays an important role in the normal development of the zebrafish notochord

    Cold Acclimation Strategy is Highly Variable Among the Sunfishes (Centrarchidae)

    We tested the hypothesis that the physiological strategy for acclimating to low body temperature is similar among closely related fish. Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomonix nigromaculatus), and white crappie (Pomonix annularis), all members of the family Centrarchidae, were acclimated to 5degrees and 25degreesC. Morphometric variables (total mass, total length, organ masses) and enzyme activities (hexokinase; lactate dehydrogenase; and cytochrome oxidase in heart, liver, and muscle) were measured in 5degreesC- and 25degreesC- acclimated fish at 5degrees and 25degreesC assay temperatures. Each species displayed a distinct physiological response to cold acclimation that differed among tissues. These data suggest that the response to cold acclimation is highly variable within families. Our findings are consistent with other studies suggesting that acclimation responses are labile and may evolve independently even among closely related species

    Leptin in Teleost Fishes: An Argument for Comparative Study

    All organisms face tradeoffs with regard to how limited energy resources should be invested. When is it most favorable to grow, to reproduce, how much lipid should be allocated to storage in preparation for a period of limited resources (e.g., winter), instead of being used for growth or maturation? These are a few of the high consequence fitness “decisions” that represent the balance between energy acquisition and allocation. Indeed, for animals to make favorable decisions about when to grow, eat, or reproduce, they must integrate signals among the systems responsible for energy acquisition, storage, and demand. We make the argument that leptin signaling is a likely candidate for an integrating system. Great progress has been made understanding the leptin system in mammals, however our understanding in fishes has been hampered by difficulty in cloning fish orthologs of mammalian proteins and (we assert), underutilization of the comparative approach

    Performance, feed utilization, and hepatic metabolic response of weaned juvenile Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.): effects of dietary lipid level and source

    The development of formulated diets and feeds is essential to increase production of farmed tuna species. There is limited knowledge of this topic, mainly on Pacific Bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) in Japan, whereas no major attempts have been made with Atlantic Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus; ABT). In the present study, two trials were performed using inert formulated diets as on-growing feeds for weaned ABT juvenile in order to establish adequate dietary levels of both lipid and omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA). In a first trial, ABT (initial weight = 2.9±0.9g) were fed for 10 days with either a commercial (Magokoro®, MGK) or two experimental feeds with two different lipid levels (15 or 20%) using krill oil (KO) as the single lipid source in order to estimate the suitable lipid content. Fish fed MGK displayed the highest growth, followed by 15KO, with no differences in fish survival. Thus, a lipid content of 15% was considered better than 20% for ABT juveniles. In the second trial, fish (initial weight = 3.3 ± 0.6g) were fed either MGK, 15KO or a feed containing 15% lipid with a combination (1:1, v/v) KO and rapeseed oil (RO) (15KORO). Fish fed 15KO and 15KORO showed the highest growth in terms of weight and fork length (including weight gain and SGR). Increasing dietary lipid level or adding RO to the feeds did not increase liver lipid content. The liver fatty acid profile largely reflected dietary intake confirming very limited LC-PUFA biosynthetic activity for this teleost species. In this respect, liver of fish fed 15KO and 20KO displayed the highest contents of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The hepatic expression of genes of lipid and fatty acid metabolism, transcription factors, and antioxidant enzymes was investigated with many of the genes showing regulation by both dietary lipid and LC-PUFA contents. The present study showed promising results that suggested ABT juveniles can be on grown on inert dry feeds that supported good fish growth and the accumulation of the health-promoting fatty acid DHA. Further studies are required in order to fully elucidate lipid and fatty acid requirements of this iconic species regarding dietary sources and production costs.En prensa1,52
