Quantum Phase Dynamics in an LC shunted Josephson Junction
We have studied both theoretically and experimentally how an LC series
circuit connected in parallel to a Josephson junction influences the Josephson
dynamics. The presence of the shell circuit introduces two energy scales, which
in specific cases can strongly differ from the plasma frequency of the isolated
junction. Josephson junctions were manufactured using Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb fabrication
technology with various on-chip LC shunt circuits. Spectroscopic measurements
in the quantum limit show an excellent agreement with theory taking into
account the shunt inductance and capacitance in the Resistively and
Capacitively Shunted Junction model. The results clearly show that the dynamics
of the system are two-dimensional, resulting in two resonant modes of the
system. These findings have important implications for the design and operation
of Josephson junctions based quantum bits
New England Pathway to Recovery: Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Center around Nature in Rocky Hill, Connecticut
In the United States, particularly in New England region, there has been an increase in drug overdoses. This drug epidemic includes an escalation in heroin use and rise in the number of opioid deaths each year. In order to improve the situation there needs to be a change in the way individuals with drug and addiction problems receive treatment through counseling and therapy, as well as other programs and activities. This change would create a positive influence and make the world a better place and allow everyone to enjoy life everyday.
The purpose of this project is to create drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility for some hundred patients who will stay between 30 and 90 days to reach a full recovery in a retreat-like atmosphere. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs and counseling will educate patients about new methods of interacting with the world around them in a drug-free environment.
Architecture, landscape and site location can play a significant role in an individuals’ healing process. Patients are more likely to successfully recover when they are in a comforting and therapeutic environment. The facility provides a place with a strong visual connection to the surrounding environment and nature – a key element in the recovery process. Natural materials such as stone and wood are used in the design to create a symbiosis with nature.

Why Study Islamic Legal Professionals?
In many countries today, including the Southeast Asian nations of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, governments regulate some aspects of Muslim life according to Islamic law. The administration of Islamic law in these states is carried out by modern courts that are structured differently and staffed by different types of figures than were earlier institutions for the implementation of Islamic law. Prior to the modern era, courts tasked with the job of resolving cases according to Shari‛a were staffed by judges with a particular type of training, and litigants appearing before these judges were generally not represented by a specialized class of lawyers. In the modern era, Shari‛a courts have undergone radical changes in many countries. Modern Shari‛a court judges are trained to find Islamic rules of a decision in ways that differ significantly from that of classical jurists. To varying degrees, these judges are also taught to apply Shari‛a law in a manner similar to that of judges who apply non-religious law outside the Islamic court system. At the same time decisions are rendered in an environment in which litigants who appear before these judges are increasingly coming to be represented by lawyers who advise on questions of law and procedure, advocate for them and appeal cases. These differences in both training and professional practice affect the way in which the court engages with the Islamic tradition and thus affects the way that Islamic law is interpreted and applied. This article argues for new attention to be paid to the educational backgrounds and professional practice of the judges and lawyers who work in Shari‛a courts to further our understanding of the practice of Islamic law in contemporary societies
The C IV Mass Density of the Universe at Redshift 5
In order to search for metals in the Lyman alpha forest at redshifts z > 4,
we have obtained spectra of high S/N and resolution of three QSOs at z > 5.4
discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These data allow us to probe to
metal enrichment of the intergalactic medium at early times with higher
sensitivity than previous studies. We find 16 C IV absorption systems with
column densities log N(C IV) = 12.50 - 13.98 over a total redshift path Delta X
= 3.29. In the redshift interval z = 4.5-5.0, where our statistics are most
reliable, we deduce a comoving mass density of C IV ions Omega(C IV) = (4.3 +/-
2.5) x 10(-8) (90% confidence limits) for absorption systems with log N(C IV) >
13.0 (for an Einstein-de Sitter cosmology with h = 0.65). This value of Omega(C
IV) is entirely consistent with those measured at z < 4; we confirm the earlier
finding by Songaila (2001) that neither the column density distribution of C IV
absorbers nor its integral show significant redshift evolution over a period of
time which stretches from 1.25 to 4.5 Gyr after the big bang. This somewhat
surprising conclusion may be an indication that the intergalactic medium was
enriched in metals at redshifts much greater than 5, perhaps by the sources
responsible for its reionization. Alternatively, the C IV systems we see may be
associated with outflows from massive star-forming galaxies at later times,
while the truly intergalactic metals may reside in regions of the Lyman alpha

The DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: Redshift Identification of Single-Line Emission Galaxies
We present two methods for determining spectroscopic redshifts of galaxies in
the DEEP2 survey which display only one identifiable feature, an emission line,
in the observed spectrum ("single-line galaxies"). First, we assume each single
line is one of the four brightest lines accessible to DEEP2: Halpha, [OIII]
5007, Hbeta, or [OII] 3727. Then, we supplement spectral information with BRI
photometry. The first method, parameter space proximity (PSP), calculates the
distance of a single-line galaxy to galaxies of known redshift in (B-R), (R-I),
R, observed wavelength parameter space. The second method is an artificial
neural network (ANN). Prior information, such as allowable line widths and
ratios, rules out one or more of the four lines for some galaxies in both
methods. Based on analyses of evaluation sets, both methods are nearly perfect
at identifying blended [OII] doublets. Of the lines identified as Halpha in the
PSP and ANN methods, 91.4% and 94.2% respectively are accurate. Although the
methods are not this accurate at discriminating between [OIII] and Hbeta, they
can identify a single line as one of the two, and the ANN method in particular
unambiguously identifies many [OIII] lines. From a sample of 640 single-line
spectra, the methods determine the identities of 401 (62.7%) and 472 (73.8%)
single lines, respectively, at accuracies similar to those found in the

Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor System
This publication describes techniques for embedding an under-display fingerprint sensor (UDFPS) system, without increasing the thickness of an electronic device (e.g., smartphone) and/or decreasing the storage capacity of a battery of the smartphone. The described techniques allow a manufacturer to embed the UDFPS system outside the planar footprint of the battery of the smartphone. Also, these techniques enhance user experience by assembling the UDFPS system closer to the bottom edge of the smartphone, may enable the removal of a display flex support (backer), and may decrease the shear stress of a display bend of a display screen of the smartphone, increasing the mechanical strength the display screen
Introduction by Guest Editors
This book grew out of conversations among the three guest editors, Mark Cammack, Michael Feener, and Clark Lombardi, in the summer of 2008 about the general lack of attention among scholars of Southeast Asian Islam on important questions about the foundations of the region’s Islamic legal structures. First, despite its evident importance, there has been little research on the process by which legislators and judges decide which interpretation of Islamic law will be formally applied by the state apparatus. Another important question that has been largely ignored by scholars concerns the qualifications of Islamic legal professionals. The three Southeast Asian states treated in this volume—Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore—have separate systems of Islamic courts. Although the educational background of those who staff these courts will clearly inform the way they understand, interpret, and apply the law, to date little research has been done on the educational processes by which judges who serve on Islamic courts are trained to think about Islamic law. Studies on the means by which judges are appointed and regulated have also been lacking—even though the decision to favor one type of candidate surely affects the interpretation and application of Islamic law in the courts. Finally, lawyers who practice before Islamic courts play a crucial role in framing and presenting the issues for decision and in mediating between the courts that apply Islamic law and the public who have recourse to the state’s official Islamic legal institutions, but research on the professional training and governance of these lawyers is almost entirely lackin
Adaptive User Interface for a Camera Aperture within an Active Display Area
This publication describes systems and techniques to account for an active display area around a camera aperture in a “hole-punch” style display of an electronic device to reduce a light-leaking effect caused by pixels surrounding the camera aperture. Illuminated pixels that are proximate to the camera aperture can degrade a quality of an image captured by a camera sensor by preventing the sensor from properly detecting light from a targeted image, such as a user’s face. To counteract this image degradation, techniques described herein override the illumination control for pixels surrounding the hole in the display. For example, responsive to the camera being engaged, one or more rings of pixels around the display hole can be controlled to have a decreased illumination level based on ambient brightness. The decreased illumination can involve being commanded to be turned off or being commanded to illuminate at a lower level. With less light emanating from pixels that are proximate to the display hole, there is less light pollution funneled into the camera aperture to affect the camera sensor
Essential SpaceWire Hardware Capabilities for a Robust Network
The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series Program (GOES-R) mission is a joint program between National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). GOES-R project selected SpaceWire as the best solution to satisfy the desire for simple and flexible instrument to spacecraft command and telemetry communications. GOES-R development and integration is complete and the observatory is scheduled for launch October 2016. The spacecraft design was required to support redundant SpaceWire links for each instrument side, as well as to route the fewest number of connections through a Slip Ring Assembly necessary to support Solar pointing instruments. The final design utilized two different router designs. The SpaceWire standard alone does not ensure the most practical or reliable network. On GOES-R a few key hardware capabilities were identified that merit serious consideration for future designs. Primarily these capabilities address persistent port stalls and the prevention of receive buffer overflows. Workarounds were necessary to overcome shortcomings that could be avoided in future designs if they utilize the capabilities, discussed in this paper, above and beyond the requirements of the SpaceWire standard
