The American model of the welfare state, incomplete as it may be, was not plucked out of thin air by the architects of the New Deal in the 1930s. Instead it is the product and logical evolution of a long historical process. 19th century federal relief programs for various population groups, including veterans, native Americans, merchant sailors, emancipated slaves, and residents of the District of Columbia, are examined in order to help better understand contemporary welfare developments

We prospectively enrolled 310 patients with IBD (191 with Crohn's disease (CD) and 119 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC)) with a follow-up period of 104 weeks (interquartile range: 103-104) in a nationwide registry. The corticosteroid-free clinical remission rate (Harvey Bradshaw Index ≤ 4, Short Clinical Colitis Activity index ≤ 2) at weeks 52 and 104 were 28% and 19% for CD and 27% and 28% for UC, respectively. Fifty-nine percent maintained corticosteroid-free clinical remission between weeks 52 and 104. Vedolizumab with concomitant immunosuppression showed comparable effectiveness outcomes compared with vedolizumab monotherapy (week 104: 21% vs. 23%; P = 0.77), whereas 8 of 13 severe infections occurred in patients treated with concomitant immunosuppression. To conclude, the clinical effect was 19% for CD and 28% for UC after 2 years of follow-up regardless of concomitant immunosuppression

Dynamics of vesicle suspensions in shear flow between walls

The behaviour of a vesicle suspension in a simple shear flow between plates (Couette flow) was investigated experimentally in parabolic flight and sounding rocket experiments by Digital Holographic Microscopy. The lift force which pushes deformable vesicles away from walls was quantitatively investigated and is found to be rather well described by a theoretical model by Olla (J Phys II (France) 7:1533, 1997). At longer shearing times, vesicles reach a steady distribution about the center plane of the shear flow chamber, through a balance between the lift force and shear induced diffusion due to hydrodynamic interactions between vesicles. This steady distribution was investigated in the BIOMICS experiment in the MASER 11 sounding rocket. The results allow an estimation of self-diffusion coefficients in vesicle suspensions and reveal possible segregation phenomena in polydisperse suspensions. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Searching for the Right Organization

The article examines four centre-right parties in East-Central Europe in order to assess the impact of ideology on party organization and revisit the thesis of organizational weakness in the region. The data collected indicate that, together with electoral success, inherited resources and national context, ideology does indeed shape the style of organization. Centre-right parties, as opposed to leftist parties, tend to be less bureau-cratized, have fewer staff members, a simpler structure, more individualized leadership and the 'party-in-public-office' tends also to have a more elevated role. Parties that have more individualistic ideologies tends also to have 'lighter' organization and weaker embeddedness, while parties subscribing to a more collectivist and corporatist type of conservatism have developed more complex party organization and rely more heavily on affiliate organizations. Analysis of temporal changes uncovers a degree of organizational vitality that is surprising given that the literature on both centre-right and on post-communist politics points towards organizational weakness
