mtDNA diversity in rabbit population from Sicily (Italy)

    Get PDF
The European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus (O.c) lives all over the world and it represents an important resource for many predators. It has been classified as a Near-Threatened species in the Red List of Vertebrates of Italy. It is present in mediterranean basin as two known subspecies: O.c. cuniculus and O.c. algirus. The mediterranean geographic distribution of the two subspecies is still not well known. In particular, in Sicily, lacking of deep studies, is based on the body size and morphological characteristics; there wasn’t a complete description of the actual existing subspecies and previous studies only reported the morphological characteristics of the sicilian rabbit population. In this study, we analyzed genetic data, mitochondrial (mt) cytochrome b (cytb), from the rabbit population in Sicily in a phylogenetic framework. This is the first study concerning the genetics of the sicilian rabbit, to reconstruct intraspecific phylogeny by comparing cytb mtDNA sequences of 13 newly isolated O.cuniculus haplotypes from Sicily and 7 individuals from other countries (Canada, France, Mexico, North Italy, South Africa, Spain, Sweden). Our results show that the rabbit population from Sicily has a mitochondrial type (Lineage B) that has been previously shown to be associated with O. c. cuniculus and is similar to sequences from rabbits in North-Est Spain, Southern France, Sweden and South Africa

Background. Bisphosphonates-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) is a serious complication, which has been defined by Bedogni et al. (1) as an adverse drug reaction consisting of progressive destruction and death of bone that affects the mandible and/or maxilla of patients exposed to the treatment with nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (NBPs) in absence of a previous radiation treatment. Generally, IV NBPs have a strong association with BRONJ than oral NBPs as evidenced by the higher incidence of BRONJ (0-10%) in patients treated with IV drugs than in patients in oral therapy (<1%). Objectives. The aim of this study was to report a clinical case of BRONJ in an oncologic patient who has been treated with anastrozole and oral NBPs for secondary osteoporosis. Case report. In February 2014 a 75-year-old woman was referred because of history of pain in the left posterior mandibular region and hypoesthesia/anesthesia of the homolateral inferior lip and chin. In the anamnesis, she had referred to be in therapy with alendronate since 2004, for a history of severe osteoporosis and, in multimodal chemotherapy and anastrazole since 2010 for a diagnosis of breast cancer. Furthermore, left lower molar extraction was performed on March 2013. Clinical examination revealed swelling of the extraoral soft tissue in the left emimandible; intraorally, the presence of a mucosal fistula on the left mandibular angle was identified. CT was performed and BRONJ diagnosis was defined with a stage 2A according to Bedogni et al. Conclusions. Administration of NBP is indicated to treat also osteoporosis anastrazole-induced in oncological patients, showing that patients with hormone receptor-positive early-stage breast cancer taking oral BP could represent a subset in which it would be useful to apply BRONJ prevention protocols

Experimental and numerical characterization of a gravitational electromagnetic energy harvester

    Get PDF
In this paper, the dynamic experimental identification of an inductive energy harvester for the conversion of vibration energy into electric power is presented. Recent advances and requirements in structural monitoring and vehicle diagnostic allow defining Autonomous Internet of Things (AIoT) systems that combine wireless sensor nodes with energy harvester devices properly designed considering the specific duty cycle. The proposed generator was based on an asymmetrical magnetic suspension and was addressed to structural monitoring applications on vehicles. The design of the interfaces of the electric, magnetic, and structural coupled systems forming the harvester are described including dynamic modeling and simulation. Finally, the results of laboratory tests were compared with the harvester dynamic response calculated through numerical simulations, and a good correspondence was obtained

RNASET2 as a tumor antagonizing gene in a melanoma cancer model

    Get PDF
The RNASET2 gene, mapped in 6q27, was previously found to exert control of tumorigenesis in an ovarian cancer system. We present here results indicating a similar control in a melanoma cancer model. Thus, this gene is most likely involved in a common general pathway of tumorigenesis. Moreover, its antitumorigenic activity is manifested in vivo but not in vitro, suggesting that this gene belongs to the growing category of tumor antagonizing/malignancy suppressor genes. A possible role of RNASET2 in the activation of a senescence program, whose responsible locus was mapped in the same chromosomal 6q27 region, seems to be inconsistent with our data

    Optomechanical two-photon hopping

    Get PDF
The hopping mechanism plays a key role in collective phenomena emerging in many-body physics. The ability to create and control systems that display this feature is important for next generation quantum technologies. Here we study two cavities separated by a vibrating two-sided perfect mirror and show that, within currently available experimental parameters, this system displays photon-pair hopping between the two electromagnetic resonators. In particular, the two-photon hopping is not due to tunneling, but rather to higher-order resonant processes. Starting from the classical problem we quantize the system and show this purely quantum feature. This opens the possibility to investigate a new mechanism of photon-pair propagation in optomechanical lattices

Liquid Foam-Ethyl Vinyl Acetate Adhesive Systems for Lining Process of Paintings: Prospects of a User-Friendly, Harmless Alternative to Conventional Products

    Get PDF
The lining of paintings is a process of conservation science and art restoration used to strengthen, flatten, or consolidate paintings on canvas by attaching by means of adhesives a second canvas to the back of the existing one. To this aim, the prospects of the use of ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) resins in aqueous dispersion applied as an adhesive in a foam form have been investigated in the present study. The key physical properties of the foam have been investigated, with a deep focus on rheological behavior and the drying rate, comparing the results with those obtained using the liquid products that are commercially available. Dedicated mock-ups have been prepared to test the adhesive for the lining process, inspecting adhesion strength, colorimetric properties, and the influence on the possible chromatic and visual alteration of the surface, also looking at the chemical interaction with painting materials and the deterioration after an artificial ageing process. The results obtained clearly indicated that the proposed technology is very suitable for the targeted application, and an EVA water-based foamed dispersion can be used for paintings' lining, in view of the ease of application, being an appropriate adhesion, no chemical interaction, nor the deterioration of the painting

Ultrasonographic appearance of early embryonic mortality in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)

    Get PDF
Embryonic mortality is one of the main causes responsible of the decline in fertility that occurs in buffaloes during periods of increasing daylight length (out sexual breeding season). Transrectal ultrasonography for pregnancy diagnosis offers some advantages over palpation per rectum: earlier diagnosis of pregnancy/non-pregnancy, determination of embryo/fetus viability, reduction of misdiagnosis, and reduction of .potential. iatrogenic embryo/fetal attrition. Non pregnant buffaloes on Day 25 after AI showed higher Resistive Index (RI) (P<0.05) and Pulsatility Index (P=0.07) values, registered on CL on Days 10 after AI, compared to pregnant buffaloes. RI values were significantly higher (P=0.02) in non pregnant buffaloes also on Day 45 after AI. Colour Doppler sonography could be used to gain specific information relating to the ovarian blood flow in predicting early embryonic loss and to describe the ultrasonographic features of early embryonic death in buffaloes
