Big data in practice: the example of nilearn for mining brain imaging data

    No full text
International audienceThis talk will present useful patterns and lessons learned for efficientapplication of machine learning to data too big to fit in memory, in thecontext of brain imaging applications.I will discuss the design of a versatile library for mining big datasetsof brain images, nilearn, and the data patterns it relies upon, implemented in scikit-learn, for machine learning, and joblib, for dataflow. In particular, I will show how to go from general principles ofefficient data processing to a simple vocabulary that can be understoodby end users and applied to raw data. I will also discuss human factors:a big data library should be usable by end users to solve theirapplication needs. In particular this talk will cover:- out-of-core computing relying on the user's data files or disk-based cache- online and on-the-fly data reduction, to get the gist out of big data- simple chaining of operations, with caching, for a versatile processing pipeline- API-design to steer non-expert users to data-efficient code- reliable documentation through examples of a library for heavy-duty data processingThe high-level concepts introduced will be illustrated with detailedtechnical discussions of Python implementations, based both on examplesusing scikit-learn, joblib and nilearn and on an analysis of how theselibraries work. The focus here is sharing insights gained while usingand developing them, as many of the lessons are not specific to brainimaging.Links:- nilearn: https://nilearn.github.io- scikit-learn: http://scikit-learn.org/stable/- joblib: https://pythonhosted.org/joblib

The measurement of the CP violating parameters in the b->uubard decays allow in principle to determine sin(2alpha), where alpha is one of the angle of the unitarity triangle. However, due to the presence of loop diagrams, the so-called penguin diagrams, the experimental measurement only gives information about an effective quantity of \alpha : æff. The measurements in the B->rho0rho0 decay allow to perform for the first time a full isospin analysis in the B->rhorho modes and hence to determine in principle the shift \alpha-æff induced by the penguin diagramms. The B->rho0rho0 decay was studied with the final \babar sample containing 465106465 10^6 \Y4S\to\BB events collected at the PEP-II collisionner. The B->rho0rho0 branching ratio BR=0.92±0.32\±0.14 10^{-6} and the longitudinal polarization fraction fL=0.75^{+0.11}_{-0.14}±0.03 were measured. The evidence for the B->rho0rho0 signal has a significance of 3,1 \sigma including systematical uncertainties. The proper-time dependence of the longitudinal component in the decay was studied and the CP-violating coefficients S^{00}_L = 0.3\pm0.7\pm0.2, C^{00}_L = 0.2\pm0.8\pm0.2. The implication of these results on the unitarity triangle alpha was studied by performing an isospin analysis. Using the BABAR results for the B->rho+rho- and B±->rho±pi0, the 68% (90%) confidence interval on the shift in alpha induced by the penguin diagrams is |\alpha-æff|uubard permet en principe d'avoir accès à sin(2alpha), où alpha est l'un des angles du triangle d'unitarité.

Myocarditis during Acute Schistosomiasis in Two Travelers

    No full text
We report two cases of myocarditis complicating acute schistosomiasis in returning travelers. Treatment with corticosteroids led to full recovery in both cases. Although the pathophysiology of this complication remains unclear, we recommend treating such patients with corticosteroids rather than praziquantel, which can be associated with clinical deterioration
