Deep VLT infrared observations of X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars
X-ray observations have unveiled the existence of a family of radio-quiet
Isolated Neutron Stars whose X-ray emission is purely thermal, hence dubbed
X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars (XDINSs). While optical observations have
allowed to relate the thermal emission to the neutron star cooling and to build
the neutron star surface thermal map, IR observations are critical to pinpoint
a spectral turnover produced by a so far unseen magnetospheric component, or by
the presence of a fallback disk. The detection of such a turnover can provide
further evidence of a link between this class of isolated neutron stars and the
magnetars, which show a distinctive spectral flattening in the IR.
Here we present the deepest IR observations ever of five XDINSs, which we use
to constrain a spectral turnover in the IR and the presence of a fallback disk.
The data are obtained using the ISAAC instrument at the VLT.
For none of our targets it was possible to identify the IR counterpart down
to limiting magnitudes H = 21.5 - 22.9. Although these limits are the deepest
ever obtained for neutron stars of this class, they are not deep enough to rule
out the existence and the nature of a possible spectral flattening in the IR.
We also derive, by using disk models, the upper limits on the mass inflow rate
in a fallback disk. We find the existence of a putative fallback disk

Similarity transformations approach for a generalized Fokker-Planck equation
By using similarity transformations approach, the exact propagator for a
generalized one-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation, with linear drift force and
space-time dependent diffusion coefficient, is obtained. The method is simple
and enables us to recover and generalize special cases studied through the Lie

Extraction of Airways with Probabilistic State-space Models and Bayesian Smoothing
Segmenting tree structures is common in several image processing
applications. In medical image analysis, reliable segmentations of airways,
vessels, neurons and other tree structures can enable important clinical
applications. We present a framework for tracking tree structures comprising of
elongated branches using probabilistic state-space models and Bayesian
smoothing. Unlike most existing methods that proceed with sequential tracking
of branches, we present an exploratory method, that is less sensitive to local
anomalies in the data due to acquisition noise and/or interfering structures.
The evolution of individual branches is modelled using a process model and the
observed data is incorporated into the update step of the Bayesian smoother
using a measurement model that is based on a multi-scale blob detector.
Bayesian smoothing is performed using the RTS (Rauch-Tung-Striebel) smoother,
which provides Gaussian density estimates of branch states at each tracking
step. We select likely branch seed points automatically based on the response
of the blob detection and track from all such seed points using the RTS
smoother. We use covariance of the marginal posterior density estimated for
each branch to discriminate false positive and true positive branches. The
method is evaluated on 3D chest CT scans to track airways. We show that the
presented method results in additional branches compared to a baseline method

Daily variability of Ceres' Albedo detected by means of radial velocities changes of the reflected sunlight
Bright features have been recently discovered by Dawn on Ceres, which extend
previous photometric and Space Telescope observations. These features should
produce distortions of the line profiles of the reflected solar spectrum and
therefore an apparent radial velocity variation modulated by the rotation of
the dwarf planet. Here we report on two sequences of observations of Ceres
performed in the nights of 31 July, 26-27 August 2015 by means of the
high-precision HARPS spectrograph at the 3.6-m La Silla ESO telescope. The
observations revealed a quite complex behaviour which likely combines a radial
velocity modulation due to the rotation with an amplitude of approx +/- 6 m/s
and an unexpected diurnal effect. The latter changes imply changes in the
albedo of Occator's bright features due to the blaze produced by the exposure
to solar radiation. The short-term variability of Ceres' albedo is on
timescales ranging from hours to months and can both be confirmed and followed

Magic mirror on the wall: Selfie-related behavior as mediator of the relationship between narcissism and problematic smartphone use
Objective: Recent research has suggested that problematic smartphone use is associated with several psychological factors and that mobile apps and smartphone-related behavior (i.e. selfi e behavior) may encourage the development of problematic smartphone use. However, little is known about how the interplay between dysfunctional personality characteristics and selfi e-related behavior can infl uence problematic smartphone use. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between narcissism and problematic smartphone use, as well as the mediating role of selfi e-related behavior in this relationship among young men and women. Method: In the current study, a total of 627 undergraduate students (283 males and 344 females) completed a cross-sectional survey. A structural equation model was tested separately for males and females in order to evaluate the associations between narcissism, selfi e-related behavior and problematic smartphone use. Results: The results showed that greater narcissism was related to increased selfi e-related behavior, which in turn were positively associated with problematic smartphone use both for males and females. However, selfi e-related behavior mediated the relationship between narcissism and problematic smartphone use only for females. Conclusions: The study provides fresh insight into our understanding of the psychological mechanisms underlying problematic smartphone use, which may inform prevention and treatment interventions

Ruptures and repairs of group therapy alliance. an untold story in psychotherapy research
Although previous studies investigated the characteristics of therapeutic alliance in group treatments, there is still a dearth of research on group alliance ruptures and repairs. The model by Safran and Muran was originally developed to address therapeutic alliance in individual therapies, and the usefulness of this approach to group intervention needs to be demonstrated. Alliance ruptures are possible at member to therapist, member to member, member to group levels. Moreover, repairs of ruptures in group are quite complex, i.e., because other group members have to process the rupture even if not directly involved. The aim of the current study is to review the empirical research on group alliance, and to examine whether the rupture repair model can be a suitable framework for clinical understanding and research of the complexity of therapeutic alliance in group treatments. We provide clinical vignettes and commentary to illustrate theoretical and research aspects of therapeutic alliance rupture and repair in groups. Our colleague Jeremy Safran made a substantial contribution to research on therapeutic alliance, and the current paper illustrates the enduring legacy of this work and its potential application to the group therapy context
DLC2 modulates angiogenic responses in vascular endothelial cells by regulating cell attachment and migration.
Deleted in liver cancer 1 (DLC1) is a RhoGTPase activation protein-containing tumor suppressor that associates with various types of cancer. Although DLC2 shares a similar domain structure with that of DLC1, the function of DLC2 is not well characterized. Here, we describe the expression and ablation of DLC2 in mice using a reporter-knockout approach. DLC2 is expressed in several tissues and in endothelial cells (ECs) of blood vessels. Although ECs and blood vessels show no histological abnormalities and mice appear overall healthy, DLC2-mutant mice display enhanced angiogenic responses induced by matrigel and by tumor cells. Silencing of DLC2 in human ECs has reduced cell attachment, increased migration, and tube formation. These changes are rescued by silencing of RhoA, suggesting that the process is RhoA pathway dependent. These results indicate that DLC2 is not required for mouse development and normal vessel formation, but may protect mouse from unwanted angiogenesis induced by, for example, tumor cells
