    Fungal enolase, ß-tubulin, and chitin are detected in brain tissue from Alzheimer's disease patients

    Recent findings provide evidence that fungal structures can be detected in brain tissue from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients using rabbit polyclonal antibodies raised against whole fungal cells. In the present work, we have developed and tested specific antibodies that recognize the fungal proteins, enolase and b-tubulin, and an antibody that recognizes the fungal polysaccharide chitin. Consistent with our previous studies, a number of rounded yeast-like and hyphal structures were detected using these antibodies in brain sections from AD patients. Some of these structures were intracellular and, strikingly, some were found to be located inside nuclei from neurons, whereas other fungal structures were detected extracellularly. Corporya amylacea from AD patients also contained enolase and b-tubulin as revealed by these selective antibodies, but were devoid of fungal chitin. Importantly, brain sections from control subjects were usually negative for staining with the three antibodies. However, a few fungal structures can be observed in some control individuals. Collectively, these findings indicate the presence of two fungal proteins, enolase and b-tubulin, and the polysaccharide chitin, in CNS tissue from AD patients.     Non stoichiometry effect and disorder in Cu2ZnSnS4 thin films obtained by flash evaporation Raman scattering investigation

    The cation disorder in Cu2ZnSnS4 thin films grown by flash evaporation of ZnS, CuS and SnS binary compounds has been studied by Raman spectroscopy. Process parameters such as the substrate temperature during the evaporation and the Ar pressure in the post-thermal treatment determined the samples' composition and Raman spectra. As a measure of cation disorder, the half-width and relative intensity of the Raman band peaking at 331-332 cm-1 is analysed. Comparison of the spectra for different samples of known composition showed that the relative intensity of the 331 cm-1 defect peak correlates with the previously reported theoretical prediction about enhancement of antisite defect formation in Cu2ZnSnS4 under "Cu-poor, Zn-rich" conditions.     Broadband Quantum Enhancement of the LIGO Detectors with Frequency-Dependent Squeezing

    Quantum noise imposes a fundamental limitation on the sensitivity of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors like LIGO, manifesting as shot noise and quantum radiation pressure noise. Here, we present the first realization of frequency-dependent squeezing in full-scale gravitational-wave detectors, resulting in the reduction of both shot noise and quantum radiation pressure noise, with broadband detector enhancement from tens of hertz to several kilohertz. In the LIGO Hanford detector, squeezing reduced the detector noise amplitude by a factor of 1.6 (4.0 dB) near 1 kHz; in the Livingston detector, the noise reduction was a factor of 1.9 (5.8 dB). These improvements directly impact LIGO’s scientific output for high-frequency sources (e.g., binary neutron star postmerger physics). The improved low-frequency sensitivity, which boosted the detector range by 15%–18% with respect to no squeezing, corresponds to an increase in the astrophysical detection rate of up to 65%. Frequency-dependent squeezing was enabled by the addition of a 300-meter-long filter cavity to each detector as part of the LIGO A+ upgrade

    El espectacular desarrollo que en las últimas décadas ha experimentado la utilización de las aguas subterráneas ha sido llevado a cabo principalmente por particulares, con escasa participación del sector público. Este desarrollo ha dado lugar a importantes beneficios socioeconómicos, pero su escasa planificación ha ocasionado en algunos casos problemas significativos. El artículo repasa los beneficios e impactos negativos producidos por el uso intensivo de las aguas subterráneas. Esta valoración contribuye a analizar la sostenibilidad futura del uso del recurso. También se plantean algunas áreas en las que es necesario avanzar para reducir los impactos producidos y garantizar el uso sostenible de las aguas subterráneas y de los recursos hídricos en general, como son la gestión colectiva de los acuíferos, y la educación, información y participación adecuada de los usuarios en su sentido más amplio.The spectacular development of groundwater resources that has taken place over the past few decades, has been primarily driven by private interests, with little involvement of the public sector. This development has resulted in important socio-economic benefits, but has generally been unplanned, thus resulting in some cases in significant problems. This article reviews the benefits and negative impacts of intensive groundwater use. This evaluation is important in order to analyse the future sustainability of groundwater development. It also discusses some areas in which some progress is necessary in order to limit the negative impacts and ensure the sustainability of groundwater use in particular, and of water resources in general.     CNN-Based Watershed Marker Extraction for Brick Segmentation in Masonry Walls

    Nowadays there is an increasing need for using artificial intelligence techniques in image-based documentation and survey in archeology, architecture or civil engineering applications. Brick segmentation is an important initial step in the documentation and analysis of masonry wall images. However, due to the heterogeneous material, size, shape and arrangement of the bricks, it is highly challenging to develop a widely adoptable solution for the problem via conventional geometric and radiometry based approaches. In this paper, we propose a new technique which combines the strength of deep learning for brick seed localization, and the Watershed algorithm for accurate instance segmentation. More specifically, we adopt a U-Net-based delineation algorithm for robust marker generation in the Watershed process, which provides as output the accurate contours of the individual bricks, and also separates them from the mortar regions. For training the network and evaluating our results, we created a new test dataset which consist of 162 hand-labeled images of various wall categories. Quantitative evaluation is provided both at instance and at pixel level, and the results are compared to two reference methods proposed for wall delineation, and to a morphology based brick segmentation approach. The experimental results showed the advantages of the proposed U-Net markered Watershed method, providing average F1-scores above 80%

    Distribution of Brown Adipose Tissue Radiodensity in Young Adults: Implications for Cold [18F]FDG-PET/CT Analyses

    Procedures: We measured 125 individuals after a personalized cooling protocol with a static [18F]FDG-PET/CT scan. We quantified BAT using different combination of threshold in every single HU for all participants. Results: We observed that the SUV threshold influences BAT quantification by [18F]FDG-PET/ CT scans more than the HU range. We found that the range from − 50 to − 10 HU had the highest proportion of total BAT volume (43.2 %), which represents 41.4 % of the total BAT metabolic activity in our cohort. We also observed that BAT volume was not different between categories of body mass index, as well as BAT activity (SUVmean). In addition, BAT was less dense in women than in men, although the BAT activity (SUVmean) was higher in all ranges of HU. We also observed that the radiodensity of BAT located in the cervical area was mainly in the range from − 50 to − 10 HU.     Mathematical literacy in Plant Physiology undergraduates: results of interventions aimed at improving students' performance

    The importance of mathematical literacy in any scientific career is widely recognized. However, various studies report lack of numeracy and mathematical literacy in students from various countries. In the present work we present a detailed study of the mathematical literacy of Spanish undergraduate students of Biology enrolled in a Plant Physiology course. We have performed individual analyses of results obtained during the period 2000-2011, for questions in the examinations requiring and not requiring mathematical skills. Additionally, we present the outcome of two interventions introduced with the aim of helping students improve their prospects for success in the course. Our results confirm previous research showing students' deficiencies in mathematical skills. However, the scores obtained for mathematical questions in the examinations are good predictors of the final grades attained in Plant Physiology, as there are strong correlations at the individual level between results for questions requiring and not requiring mathematical skills. The introduction of a laboratory session devoted to strengthening the application of students' previously acquired mathematical knowledge did not change significantly the results obtained for mathematical questions. Since mathematical abilities of students entering university have declined in recent years, this intervention may have helped to maintain students' performance to a level comparable to that of previous years. The outcome of self-assessment online tests indicates that though Mathematics anxiety is lower than during examinations, the poor results obtained for questions requiring mathematical skills are, at least in part, due to a lack of self-efficacy

    An investigation into CLIL-related sections of EFL coursebooks : issues of CLIL inclusion in the publishing market

    The current ELT global coursebook market has embraced CLIL as a weak form of bilingual education and an innovative component to include in General English coursebooks for EFL contexts. In this paper I investigate how CLIL is included in ELT coursebooks aimed at teenaged learners, available to teachers in Argentina. My study is based on the content analysis of four series which include a section advertised as CLIL-oriented. Results suggest that such sections are characterised by (1) little correlation between featured subject specific content and school curricula in L1, (2) oversimplification of contents, and (3) dominance of reading skills development and lower-order thinking tasks. Through this study, I argue that CLIL components become superficial supplements rather than a meaningful attempt to promote weak forms of bilingual education

    Search for gravitational waves from Scorpius X-1 with a hidden Markov model in O3 LIGO data

    Results are presented for a semicoherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the low-mass x-ray binary Scorpius X-1, using a hidden Markov model (HMM) to allow for spin wandering. This search improves on previous HMM-based searches of Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory data by including the orbital period in the search template grid, and by analyzing data from the latest (third) observing run. In the frequency range searched, from 60 to 500 Hz, we find no evidence of gravitational radiation. This is the most sensitive search for Scorpius X-1 using a HMM to date. For the most sensitive subband, starting at 256.06 Hz, we report an upper limit on gravitational wave strain (at 95% confidence) of h95%0=6.16×10−26, assuming the orbital inclination angle takes its electromagnetically restricted value ι=44°. The upper limits on gravitational wave strain reported here are on average a factor of ∼3 lower than in the second observing run HMM search. This is the first Scorpius X-1 HMM search with upper limits that reach below the indirect torque-balance limit for certain subbands, assuming ι=44°

    First joint observation by the underground gravitational-wave detector KAGRA with GEO 600

    We report the results of the first joint observation of the KAGRA detector with GEO 600. KAGRA is a cryogenic and underground gravitational-wave detector consisting of a laser interferometer with 3 km arms, located in Kamioka, Gifu, Japan. GEO 600 is a British–German laser interferometer with 600 m arms, located near Hannover, Germany. GEO 600 and KAGRA performed a joint observing run from April 7 to 20, 2020. We present the results of the joint analysis of the GEO–KAGRA data for transient gravitational-wave signals, including the coalescence of neutron-star binaries and generic unmodeled transients. We also perform dedicated searches for binary coalescence signals and generic transients associated with gamma-ray burst events observed during the joint run. No gravitational-wave events were identified. We evaluate the minimum detectable amplitude for various types of transient signals and the spacetime volume for which the network is sensitive to binary neutron-star coalescences. We also place lower limits on the distances to the gamma-ray bursts analyzed based on the non-detection of an associated gravitational-wave signal for several signal models, including binary coalescences. These analyses demonstrate the feasibility and utility of KAGRA as a member of the global gravitational-wave detector network
