Deverbal semantics and the Montagovian generative lexicon

We propose a lexical account of action nominals, in particular of deverbal nominalisations, whose meaning is related to the event expressed by their base verb. The literature about nominalisations often assumes that the semantics of the base verb completely defines the structure of action nominals. We argue that the information in the base verb is not sufficient to completely determine the semantics of action nominals. We exhibit some data from different languages, especially from Romance language, which show that nominalisations focus on some aspects of the verb semantics. The selected aspects, however, seem to be idiosyncratic and do not automatically result from the internal structure of the verb nor from its interaction with the morphological suffix. We therefore propose a partially lexicalist approach view of deverbal nouns. It is made precise and computable by using the Montagovian Generative Lexicon, a type theoretical framework introduced by Bassac, Mery and Retor\'e in this journal in 2010. This extension of Montague semantics with a richer type system easily incorporates lexical phenomena like the semantics of action nominals in particular deverbals, including their polysemy and (in)felicitous copredications.Comment: A revised version will appear in the Journal of Logic, Language and Informatio

PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS REGARDING GROWTH OF THE DAIRY INDUSTRY IN ILLINOIS

Community opposition to dairies has altered location decisions by milk producers. Our objective was to identify residents' perceptions towards dairy by individual and community characteristics. A mail survey of residents of dairy counties and non-dairy counties was conducted. Dairy county residents were more willing to live close to a dairy.Livestock Production/Industries,

Second-year pre-service teachers’ responses to proportional reasoning test items

A recent international study of pre-service teachers identified that proportional reasoning was problematic for pre-service teachers. Proportional reasoning is an important topic in the middle years of schooling and therefore it is critical that teachers understand this topic and can rely on their Mathematical Content Knowledge (MCK) when teaching. The focus of this paper is second-year Australian primary pre-service teachers’ MCK of real number items related to ratio, rate, proportion and proportional reasoning. This paper reports on strengths and weakness of pre-service teachers’ MCK when responding to test items; including a method suitable for analysing responses to five items and ranked by three levels of difficulty. The results revealed insights into their correct methods of solutions and common incorrect responses, identifying difficulty, where multiplication and division were required. The method of coding test items by difficulty ranking may assist with developing an appropriate learning trajectory, which will assist pre-service teachers develop their MCK of this and other difficult topics

A Generative Montagovian Lexicon for Polysemous Deverbal Nouns

Accepted for publication in the proceedings of 4th congress on Universal Logic --- Logic and linguistics workshop. Rio de Janeiro April 4-7 2013.International audienceWe propose a computational formalization of some forms of polysemy. Here we focus on the resultative/processual polysemy of deverbal nouns like assinatura ("signing/signature") or abertura ("opening/aperture") in Por- tuguese -- we also study similar constructs in French, Italian, and English. We follow the Montagovian Generative Lexicon (MGL) introduced in Bassac, Mery & Retor ́e (2010) based on second-order Girard's F system with several entity types -- including at least one type t for propositions and several entity types, as v (event), s (state) φ (physical object). Our for- malization produces the readings involving one aspect of the polysemous noun, and it also handles properly co-predication phenomena

    An overview of portuguese wordnets

Semantic relations between words are key to building systems that aim to understand and manipulate language. For En- glish, the “de facto” standard for representing this kind of knowledge is Princeton’s WordNet. Here, we describe the wordnet-like resources currently available for Portuguese: their origins, methods of creation, sizes, and usage restrictions. We start tackling the problem of comparing them, but only in quantitative terms. Finally, we sketch ideas for potential collaboration between some of the projects.(undefined

    As Wordnets do Português

Series: "Oslo Studies in Language". ISSN 1890-9639. 7(1), 2015.Not many years ago it was usual to comment on the lack of an open lexical- semantic knowledge base, following the lines of Princeton WordNet, but for Portuguese. Today, the landscape has changed significantly, and re- searchers that need access to this specific kind of resource have not one, but several alternatives to choose from. The present article describes the wordnet-like resources currently available for Portuguese. It provides some context on their origin, creation approach, size and license for utilization. Apart from being an obvious starting point for those looking for a computational resource with information on the meaning of Portuguese words, this article describes the resources available, compares them and lists some plans for future work, sketching ideas for potential collaboration between the projects described.CLUPFundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Pengaruh Aplikasi Ga3 Terhadap Pembungaan Tanaman Anthurium Andreanum CV. Avo Cuba

The objective of the research was to determine the effect of GA3 application on the flowering of Anthurium andreanum cv. Avo Cuba. The experiment consisted of two factors namely dosage and frequency of application: once or twice with one half dosage each. The result showed that GA3 increased leaf area, length of flower stalk, and the number of flower produced, shortened the time of flower emergence and harvest date. GA3 did not influence flower size and vase life. The frequency of application had no effect on Anthurium flowering. There was no interaction of dosage and frequency of application. Dosage of GA3 at 10 mg per plant gave good effect on reproductive characteristics

Verso is in good condition, the ink on the recto has smudged, but is still easily legible.; Humanistic Script (Similar to some Carolingian Scripts); The vellum was prepared meticulously, it is incredibly smooth to the touch and looks almost as white as a sheet of paper. However, the lettering is very simple, with many corrections made. There are no images. It is likely that this book was made for academics, Italians were very interested in Ancient historians like Livy.; Brown inkhttps://digital.kenyon.edu/mdvlmanuscripts/1002/thumbnail.jp
