Conformative Filtering for Implicit Feedback Data
Implicit feedback is the simplest form of user feedback that can be used for
item recommendation. It is easy to collect and is domain independent. However,
there is a lack of negative examples. Previous work tackles this problem by
assuming that users are not interested or not as much interested in the
unconsumed items. Those assumptions are often severely violated since
non-consumption can be due to factors like unawareness or lack of resources.
Therefore, non-consumption by a user does not always mean disinterest or
irrelevance. In this paper, we propose a novel method called Conformative
Filtering (CoF) to address the issue. The motivating observation is that if
there is a large group of users who share the same taste and none of them have
consumed an item before, then it is likely that the item is not of interest to
the group. We perform multidimensional clustering on implicit feedback data
using hierarchical latent tree analysis (HLTA) to identify user `tastes' groups
and make recommendations for a user based on her memberships in the groups and
on the past behavior of the groups. Experiments on two real-world datasets from
different domains show that CoF has superior performance compared to several
common baselines
Treatment of Linear and Nonlinear Dielectric Property of Molecular Monolayer and Submonolayer with Microscopic Dipole Lattice Model: I. Second Harmonic Generation and Sum-Frequency Generation
In the currently accepted models of the nonlinear optics, the nonlinear
radiation was treated as the result of an infinitesimally thin polarization
sheet layer, and a three layer model was generally employed. The direct
consequence of this approach is that an apriori dielectric constant, which
still does not have a clear definition, has to be assigned to this polarization
layer. Because the Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) and the Sum-Frequency
Generation vibrational Spectroscopy (SFG-VS) have been proven as the sensitive
probes for interfaces with the submonolayer coverage, the treatment based on
the more realistic discrete induced dipole model needs to be developed. Here we
show that following the molecular optics theory approach the SHG, as well as
the SFG-VS, radiation from the monolayer or submonolayer at an interface can be
rigorously treated as the radiation from an induced dipole lattice at the
interface. In this approach, the introduction of the polarization sheet is no
longer necessary. Therefore, the ambiguity of the unaccounted dielectric
constant of the polarization layer is no longer an issue. Moreover, the
anisotropic two dimensional microscopic local field factors can be explicitly
expressed with the linear polarizability tensors of the interfacial molecules.
Based on the planewise dipole sum rule in the molecular monolayer, crucial
experimental tests of this microscopic treatment with SHG and SFG-VS are
discussed. Many puzzles in the literature of surface SHG and SFG spectroscopy
studies can also be understood or resolved in this framework. This new
treatment may provide a solid basis for the quantitative analysis in the
surface SHG and SFG studies.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figure
Geometry Constrained Weakly Supervised Object Localization
We propose a geometry constrained network, termed GC-Net, for weakly
supervised object localization (WSOL). GC-Net consists of three modules: a
detector, a generator and a classifier. The detector predicts the object
location defined by a set of coefficients describing a geometric shape (i.e.
ellipse or rectangle), which is geometrically constrained by the mask produced
by the generator. The classifier takes the resulting masked images as input and
performs two complementary classification tasks for the object and background.
To make the mask more compact and more complete, we propose a novel multi-task
loss function that takes into account area of the geometric shape, the
categorical cross-entropy and the negative entropy. In contrast to previous
approaches, GC-Net is trained end-to-end and predict object location without
any post-processing (e.g. thresholding) that may require additional tuning.
Extensive experiments on the CUB-200-2011 and ILSVRC2012 datasets show that
GC-Net outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin. Our source code

Link Mining for Kernel-based Compound-Protein Interaction Predictions Using a Chemogenomics Approach
Virtual screening (VS) is widely used during computational drug discovery to
reduce costs. Chemogenomics-based virtual screening (CGBVS) can be used to
predict new compound-protein interactions (CPIs) from known CPI network data
using several methods, including machine learning and data mining. Although
CGBVS facilitates highly efficient and accurate CPI prediction, it has poor
performance for prediction of new compounds for which CPIs are unknown. The
pairwise kernel method (PKM) is a state-of-the-art CGBVS method and shows high
accuracy for prediction of new compounds. In this study, on the basis of link
mining, we improved the PKM by combining link indicator kernel (LIK) and
chemical similarity and evaluated the accuracy of these methods. The proposed
method obtained an average area under the precision-recall curve (AUPR) value
of 0.562, which was higher than that achieved by the conventional Gaussian
interaction profile (GIP) method (0.425), and the calculation time was only
increased by a few percent

Anonymous Single-Sign-On for n designated services with traceability
Anonymous Single-Sign-On authentication schemes have been proposed to allow
users to access a service protected by a verifier without revealing their
identity which has become more important due to the introduction of strong
privacy regulations. In this paper we describe a new approach whereby anonymous
authentication to different verifiers is achieved via authorisation tags and
pseudonyms. The particular innovation of our scheme is authentication can only
occur between a user and its designated verifier for a service, and the
verification cannot be performed by any other verifier. The benefit of this
authentication approach is that it prevents information leakage of a user's
service access information, even if the verifiers for these services collude
which each other. Our scheme also supports a trusted third party who is
authorised to de-anonymise the user and reveal her whole services access
information if required. Furthermore, our scheme is lightweight because it does
not rely on attribute or policy-based signature schemes to enable access to
multiple services. The scheme's security model is given together with a
security proof, an implementation and a performance evaluation.Comment: 3
Timeliness of Clinic Attendance is a good predictor of Virological Response and Resistance to Antiretroviral drugs in HIV-infected patients
Ensuring long-term adherence to therapy is essential for the success of HIV treatment. As access to viral load monitoring and genotyping is poor in resource-limited settings, a simple tool to monitor adherence is needed. We assessed the relationship between an indicator based on timeliness of clinic attendance and virological response and HIV drug resistance
Global datasets of leaf photosynthetic capacity for ecological and earth system research
The maximum rate of Rubisco carboxylation (Vcmax) determines leaf photosynthetic capacity and is a key parameter for estimating the terrestrial carbon cycle, but its spatial information is lacking, hindering global ecological research. Here, we convert leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) retrieved from satellite data to Vcmax, based on plants’ optimal distribution of nitrogen between light harvesting and carboxylation pathways. We also derive Vcmax from satellite (GOME-2) observations of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) as a proxy of leaf photosynthesis using a data assimilation technique. These two independent global Vcmax products agree well (r 2=0.79, RMSE=15.46 μmol m-2 s -1 25 , P<0.001) and compare well with 3672 ground-based measurements (r2=0.68, RMSE=13.55 μmol m-2 s -1 and P<0.001 for SIF; r2=0.55, RMSE=17.55 μmol m-2 s -1 and P<0.001 for LCC). The LCC-derived Vcmax product is also used to constrain the retrieval of Vcmax from TROPOMI SIF data to produce an optimized Vcmax product using both SIF and LCC information. The global distributions of these products are compatible with Vcmax computed from an ecological optimality theory using meteorological variables, but importantly reveal additional information on the influence of land cover, irrigation, soil pH and leaf nitrogen on leaf photosynthetic capacity. These satellite-based approaches and spatial Vcmax products are primed to play a major role in global ecosystem research. The three remote sensing Vcmax products based on SIF, LCC and SIF+LCC are available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6466968 (Chen et al., 2020) and the code for implementing the ecological optimality theory is available at https://github.com/SmithEcophysLab/optimal_vcmax_R (Smith, 2020)

Airborne measurements of western U.S. wildfire emissions: Comparison with prescribed burning and air quality implications
Wildfires emit significant amounts of pollutants that degrade air quality. Plumes from three wildfires in the western U.S. were measured from aircraft during the Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) and the Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP), both in summer 2013. This study reports an extensive set of emission factors (EFs) for over 80 gases and 5 components of submicron particulate matter (PM1) from these temperate wildfires. These include rarely, or never before, measured oxygenated volatile organic compounds and multifunctional organic nitrates. The observed EFs are compared with previous measurements of temperate wildfires, boreal forest fires, and temperate prescribed fires. The wildfires emitted high amounts of PM1 (with organic aerosol (OA) dominating the mass) with an average EF that is more than 2 times the EFs for prescribed fires. The measured EFs were used to estimate the annual wildfire emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, total nonmethane organic compounds, and PM1 from 11 western U.S. states. The estimated gas emissions are generally comparable with the 2011 National Emissions Inventory (NEI). However, our PM1 emission estimate (1530 ± 570 Gg yr-1) is over 3 times that of the NEI PM2.5 estimate and is also higher thanthe PM2.5 emitted from all other sources in these states in the NEI. This study indicates that the source of OA from biomass burning in the western states is significantly underestimated. In addition, our results indicate that prescribed burning may be an effective method to reduce fine particle emissions
