    We conducted a meta-analysis of published retrospective studies and compared the effectiveness of pars plana vitrectomy with and without internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for idiopathic epiretinal membrane (IERM). The results revealed that patients in the IERM+ILM peeling group had better BCVA after surgery within 12 months than those in IERM peeling group. But patients in the IERM peeling group showed better BCVA in the 18th month. More retrospective studies or randomized controlled trials are required to investigate and compare the long-term effect of IERM removal with and without ILM peeling

    Microvasospasms After Experimental Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Do Not Depend on Endothelin A Receptors

    Background and Purpose-Perturbations in cerebral microcirculation (eg, microvasospasms) and reduced neurovascular communication determine outcome after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). ET-1 (endothelin-1) and its receptors have been implicated in the pathophysiology of large artery spasms after SAH;however, their role in the development of microvascular dysfunction is currently unknown. Here, we investigated whether inhibiting ETA (endothelin A) receptors can reduce microvasospasms after experimentally induced SAH. Methods-SAH was induced in male C57BL/6 mice by filament perforation of the middle cerebral artery. Three hours after SAH, a cranial window was prepared and the pial and parenchymal cerebral microcirculation was measured in vivo using two-photon microscopy before, during, and after administration of the ETA receptor inhibitor clazosentan. In separate experiments, the effect of clazosentan treatment on neurological outcome was measured 3 days after SAH. Results: Clazosentan treatment had no effect on the number or severity of SAH-induced cerebral microvasospasms nor did it affect neurological outcome. Conclusions: Our results indicate that ETA receptors, which mediate large artery spasms after SAH, do not seem to play a role in the development of microarterial spasms, suggesting that posthemorrhagic spasms are mediated by distinct mechanisms in large and small cerebral vessels. Given that cerebral microvessel dysfunction is a key factor for outcome after SAH, further research into the mechanisms that underlie posthemorrhagic microvasospasms is urgently needed

    As an important cereal crop, barley occupies an important position in feed production and food processing. Proteins in barley grains have significant effects on the beer brewing process and beer quality, especially in terms of its foaming capacity and turbidity. However, little research has been conducted on the important proteins in barley such as hordeins and heat-stable proteins (protein Z and lipid transfer proteins). Information on their structure is lacking, and the development of their functions is still in its early stages. This review paper focuses on the structure, functional properties and application of important proteins in barley, and outlines their roles and changes in beer brewing with the aim of providing theoretical references for their processing and utilization

    Design and hardware evaluation of the optical-link system for the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter Phase-II Upgrade

    An optical link system is being developed for the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter Phase-II upgrade. The optical link system is responsible for transmit the data of over 182 thousand detector channels from 1524 Front-End Boards (FEBs) through 26 optical fibers per FEB over 150 meters to the counting room and brings clocks, bunch crossing reset signals and slow control/monitoring signals back to the FEBs. The optical link system is based on the Low-Power GigaBit Transceivers (lpGBTs) and the Versatile optical Transceiver (VTRx+) modules, which both are being developed for the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade. An evaluation board is designed and the major functions of the optical link system are being evaluated. The design of the optical link system and the evaluation of major functions are presented in the paper.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    Total Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Score and Cerebral Bleeding Risk in Patients With Acute Stroke Treated With Intravenous Thrombolysis

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association of total cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) score with the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in patients with acute ischemic stroke who received intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) using recombinant tissue-plasminogen activator (rt-PA). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical data from two stroke registries of patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with IVT. We assessed the baseline magnetic resonance (MR) visible cSVD markers and total cSVD score (ranging from 0 to 4) between patients with and without ICH after IVT. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association of total cSVD score with the risk of ICH after IVT, adjusted for cofounders selected by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). We additionally performed an E-value analysis to fully explain away a specific exposure-outcome association. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to quantify the predictive potential of the total cSVD score for any ICH after IVT. RESULTS: Among 271 eligible patients, 55 (20.3%) patients experienced any ICH, 16 (5.9%) patients experienced a symptomatic ICH (sICH), and 5 (1.85%) patients had remote intracranial parenchymal hemorrhage (rPH). Logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of any ICH increased with increasing cSVD score [per unit increase, adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.03, 95% CI 1.22–3.41, P = 0.007]. Sensitivity analyses using E-value revealed that it would need moderately robust unobserved confounding to render the exposure-outcome (cSVD-any ICH) association null. ROC analysis showed that compared with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score alone, a combination of cSVD and NIHSS score had a larger area under the curve for any ICH (0.811, 95% CI 0.756–0.866 vs. 0.784, 95% CI 0.723–0.846, P = 0.0004). CONCLUSION: The total cSVD score is associated with an increased risk of any ICH after IVT and improves prediction for any ICH compared with NIHSS alone

    Effective binuclear Pd(II) complexes for Suzuki reactions in water

    A series of new ionic binuclear Pd(II) complexes supported by water-soluble bis(?-diimine) ligands were prepared and employed as catalysts for the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki reaction in aqueous media. The binuclear nature of the complexes increased the reaction rate, while electronic and steric modification of the ligand frameworks had a remarkable influence upon the catalytic activity of the palladium complexes. The catalysts were shown to be homogeneous through mercury poisoning experiments and complexes could be recycled more than 10 times without loss of catalytic activity.     A chromosome-scale genome assembly of Castanopsis hystrix provides new insights into the evolution and adaptation of Fagaceae species

    Fagaceae species dominate forests and shrublands throughout the Northern Hemisphere, and have been used as models to investigate the processes and mechanisms of adaptation and speciation. Compared with the well-studied genus Quercus, genomic data is limited for the tropical-subtropical genus Castanopsis. Castanopsis hystrix is an ecologically and economically valuable species with a wide distribution in the evergreen broad-leaved forests of tropical-subtropical Asia. Here, we present a high-quality chromosome-scale reference genome of C. hystrix, obtained using a combination of Illumina and PacBio HiFi reads with Hi-C technology. The assembled genome size is 882.6 Mb with a contig N50 of 40.9 Mb and a BUSCO estimate of 99.5%, which are higher than those of recently published Fagaceae species. Genome annotation identified 37,750 protein-coding genes, of which 97.91% were functionally annotated. Repeat sequences constituted 50.95% of the genome and LTRs were the most abundant repetitive elements. Comparative genomic analysis revealed high genome synteny between C. hystrix and other Fagaceae species, despite the long divergence time between them. Considerable gene family expansion and contraction were detected in Castanopsis species. These expanded genes were involved in multiple important biological processes and molecular functions, which may have contributed to the adaptation of the genus to a tropical-subtropical climate. In summary, the genome assembly of C. hystrix provides important genomic resources for Fagaceae genomic research communities, and improves understanding of the adaptation and evolution of forest trees
