Asymptotes in SU(2) Recoupling Theory: Wigner Matrices, 3j3j Symbols, and Character Localization

In this paper we employ a novel technique combining the Euler Maclaurin formula with the saddle point approximation method to obtain the asymptotic behavior (in the limit of large representation index JJ) of generic Wigner matrix elements DMM′J(g)D^{J}_{MM'}(g). We use this result to derive asymptotic formulae for the character χJ(g)\chi^J(g) of an SU(2) group element and for Wigner's 3j3j symbol. Surprisingly, given that we perform five successive layers of approximations, the asymptotic formula we obtain for χJ(g)\chi^J(g) is in fact exact. This result provides a non trivial example of a Duistermaat-Heckman like localization property for discrete sums.Comment: 36 pages, 3 figure

Impact of motor fluctuations on real-life gait in Parkinson’s patients

Background people with PD (PWP) have an increased risk of becoming inactive. Wearable sensors can provide insights into daily physical activity and walking patterns. Research questions (1) is the severity of motor fluctuations associated with sensor-derived average daily walking quantity? (2) is the severity of motor fluctuations associated with the amount of change in sensor-derived walking quantity after levodopa intake? Methods 304 Dutch PWP from the Parkinson@Home study were included. At baseline, all participants received a clinical examination. During the follow-up period (median: 97 days; 25-Interquartile range-IQR: 91 days, 75-IQR: 188 days), participants used the Fox Wearable Companion app and streamed smartwatch accelerometer data to a cloud platform. The first research question was assessed by linear regression on the sensor-derived mean time spent walking/day with the severity of fluctuations (MDS-UPDRS item 4.4) as independent variable, controlled for age and MDS-UPDRS part-III score. The second research question was assessed by linear regression on the sensor-derived mean post-levodopa walking quantity, with the sensor-derived mean pre-levodopa walking quantity and severity of fluctuations as independent variables, controlled for mean time spent walking per day, age and MDS-UPDRS part-III score. Results PWP spent most time walking between 8am and 1pm, summing up to 72 ± 39 (mean ± standard deviation) minutes of walking/day. The severity of motor fluctuations did not influence the mean time spent walking (B = 2.4 ± 1.9, p = 0.20), but higher age (B = −1.3 ± 0.3, p = < 0.001) and greater severity of motor symptoms (B = −0.6 ± 0.2, p < 0.001) was associated with less time spent walking (F(3,216) = 14.6, p<.001, R2 =.17). The severity of fluctuations was not associated with the amount of change in time spent walking in relation to levodopa intake in any part of the day. Significance Analysis of sensor-derived gait quantity suggests that the severity of motor fluctuations is not associated with changes in real-life walking patterns in mildly to moderate affected PWP

Localization by disorder in the infrared conductivity of (Y,Pr)Ba2Cu3O7 films

The ab-plane reflectivity of (Y{1-x}Prx)Ba2Cu3O7 thin films was measured in the 30-30000 cm-1 range for samples with x = 0 (Tc = 90 K), x = 0.4 (Tc = 35 K) and x = 0.5 (Tc = 19 K) as a function of temperature in the normal state. The effective charge density obtained from the integrated spectral weight decreases with increasing x. The variation is consistent with the higher dc resistivity for x = 0.4, but is one order of magnitude smaller than what would be expected for x = 0.5. In the latter sample, the conductivity is dominated at all temperatures by a large localization peak. Its magnitude increases as the temperature decreases. We relate this peak to the dc resistivity enhancement. A simple localization-by-disorder model accounts for the optical conductivity of the x = 0.5 sample.Comment: 7 pages with (4) figures include

Leadership in Improving Schools: A Qualitative Perspective

    Get PDF
This article reports early case-study data gathered from 20 schools involved in the ‘Impact of School Leadership on Pupil Outcomes’ project. We present and discuss the perceptions of headteachers and other school leaders regarding leadership factors that directly and indirectly affect pupil outcomes in these improving schools. Included are issues relating to the pivotal role played by the headteacher in setting and communicating a strategic vision for the school; models of distributed leadership; and the building of leadership capacity so as to build a collective responsibility for the improvement of pupil outcomes

Electron-Hole Correlations and Optical Excitonic Gaps in Quantum-Dot Quantum Wells: Tight-Binding Approach

Electron-hole correlation in quantum-dot quantum wells (QDQW's) is investigated by incorporating Coulomb and exchange interactions into an empirical tight-binding model. Sufficient electron and hole single-particle states close to the band edge are included in the configuration to achieve convergence of the first spin-singlet and triplet excitonic energies within a few meV. Coulomb shifts of about 100 meV and exchange splittings of about 1 meV are found for CdS/HgS/CdS QDQW's (4.7 nm CdS core diameter, 0.3 nm HgS well width and 0.3 nm to 1.5 nm CdS clad thickness) which have been characterized experimentally by Weller and co-workers [ D. Schooss, A. Mews, A. Eychmuller, H. Weller, Phys. Rev. B, 49, 17072 (1994)]. The optical excitonic gaps calculated for those QDQW's are in good agreement with the experiment.Comment: 3 figures, to appear in Phys.Rev.

Exploring the nature of resilience in paramedic practice: A psycho-social study

    Get PDF
Previous research has identified that paramedics experience high levels of stress and sickness rates which have escalated in recent years due to changes to workforce restructuring. While a number of studies have investigated resilience among healthcare professionals, there is little research exploring how paramedics address work challenges and how they become resilient. Using psychosocial methodology, seven paramedics participated in Free Association Narrative interviewing; all were based at one regional centre. In line with the study design, data analysis adopted a psycho-social approach that generated four themes and 10 sub-themes which, characterised participants’ experiences. Coping and resilience was impacted upon via formal methods of support including management, debriefing and referral to outside agencies. Alongside this, more informal methods aided resilience. Informal methods included peer support, support from family and friends and the use of humour. Uniquely, this study uncovered how detachment is used to manage emotions. The study has implications for the services need to support the emotional needs of paramedics

Tomato: a crop species amenable to improvement by cellular and molecular methods

    Get PDF
Tomato is a crop plant with a relatively small DNA content per haploid genome and a well developed genetics. Plant regeneration from explants and protoplasts is feasable which led to the development of efficient transformation procedures. In view of the current data, the isolation of useful mutants at the cellular level probably will be of limited value in the genetic improvement of tomato. Protoplast fusion may lead to novel combinations of organelle and nuclear DNA (cybrids), whereas this technique also provides a means of introducing genetic information from alien species into tomato. Important developments have come from molecular approaches. Following the construction of an RFLP map, these RFLP markers can be used in tomato to tag quantitative traits bred in from related species. Both RFLP's and transposons are in the process of being used to clone desired genes for which no gene products are known. Cloned genes can be introduced and potentially improve specific properties of tomato especially those controlled by single genes. Recent results suggest that, in principle, phenotypic mutants can be created for cloned and characterized genes and will prove their value in further improving the cultivated tomato.
