A mobile mapping system for hazardous facilities
The Mobile Mapping System (MMS) is a completely self-contained vehicle with omnidirectional capability and extremely good odometry, capable of operation up to 12 hours between battery charges. The platform itself is based on a dual differential drive system with a compliant linkage between the two drive systems. This compliant linkage allows for low-level controller errors to be absorbed by the system and their navigational effects to be compensated for, yielding an extremely accurate navigational capability. Vehicle design also allows for a considerable payload (250 lb) and a large surface area for auxiliary equipment mounting (2 by 6 ft). The vehicle supports remote operation by reading commands and writing replies through its serial communications port. Use of a radio-ethernet and a radio-video channel allow for remote video and communications links to be maintained with the vehicle in many remote operation environments. The MMS uses a structured light system to quickly acquire coarse range images of the environment and a coherent laser radar (CLR) to acquire finer resolution range images. The coherent laser radar can also be used to determine platform position and orientation to millimeter accuracies if targets of known. Sensor range image data as well as video are off loaded to a remote computer for postprocessing, display, and archiving. A prenatal coparenting intervention with unmarried father-mother dyads: Fidelity of intervention delivery by male-female community mentor teams
Background: Most prenatal preventive interventions for unmarried mothers do not integrate fathers or help the parents plan for the development of a functional coparenting alliance after the baby's arrival. Furthermore, properly trained professionals have only rarely examined the fidelity of these interventions. Purpose: This report examines whether experienced community interventionists (home visitors, health educators, fatherhood service personnel) with no formal couples' therapy training are capable of pairing together to deliver with adequate fidelity a manualized dyadic intervention designed for expectant unmarried mothers and fathers. Methods: Three male and four female mentors (home visitors, health educators, fatherhood personnel) working in paired maleY female co-mentor teams delivered a seven-session BFiguring It Out for the Child[curriculum (six prenatal sessions, one booster) to 14 multirisk, unmarried African American families (parent age ranging from 14 to 40). Parental well-being and views of fatherhood were assessed before the intervention and again 3 months after the baby's birth. Quality assurance analysts evaluated mentor fidelity (adherence to the curriculum, competence in engaging couples with specified curricular content) through a review of the transcripts and audiotapes from the sessions. Mentors also rated their own adherence. Results: Although the mentors overestimated adherence, quality assurance analyst ratings found acceptable levels of adherence and competence, with no significant maleYfemale differences in fidelity. Adherence and competence were marginally higher in sessions that required fewer direct couples' interventions. Parents reported satisfaction with the interventions and showed statistically significant improvement in the family dimensions of interest at 3-4 months posttreatment. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Findings support the wisdom of engaging men both as interventionists and as recipients of prenatal coparenting interventionsVeven in families where the parents are uncoupled and non-co-residential. © 2017 Taiwan Nurses Association
Image-potential band-gap narrowing at a metal/semiconductor interface
GW approximation is used to systematically revisit the image-potential
band-gap narrowing at metal/semiconductor interfaces proposed by Inkson in the
1970's. Here we have questioned how the narrowing as calculated from
quasi-particle energy spectra for the jellium/Si interface depends on of
the jellium. The gap narrowing is found to only weakly depend on (i.e.,
narrowing eV even for a large . Hence we can turn to
smaller polarizability in the semiconductor side as an important factor in
looking for larger narrowing.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Flux transitions in a superconducting ring
We perform a numeric study of the flux transitions in a superconducting ring
at fixed temperature, while the applied field is swept at an ideally slow rate.
The current around the ring and its free energy are evaluated. We partially
explain some of the known experimental features, and predict a considerably
large new feature: in the vicinity of a critical field, giant jumps are
expected
Electronic properties of metal induced gap states at insulator/metal interfaces -- dependence on the alkali halide and the possibility of excitonic mechanism of superconductivity
Motivated from the experimental observation of metal induced gap states
(MIGS) at insulator/metal interfaces by Kiguchi {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett.
{\bf 90}, 196803 (2003)], we have theoretically investigated the electronic
properties of MIGS at interfaces between various alkali halides and a metal
represented by a jellium with the first-principles density functional method.
We have found that, on top of the usual evanescent state, MIGS generally have a
long tail on halogen sites with a -like character, whose penetration depth
() is as large as half the lattice constant of bulk alkali halides.
This implies that , while little dependent on the carrier density in
the jellium, is dominated by the lattice constant (hence by energy gap) of the
alkali halide, where . We also propose a possibility of the MIGS working favorably for the
exciton-mediated superconductivity.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure
Structure comparison of binary and weighted niche-overlap graphs
In ecological networks, niche-overlap graphs are considered as complex systems. They represent the competition between two predators that share common resources. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the structural properties of these graphs considered as weighted networks and compare their measures with the ones calculated for the binary networks. To conduct this study, we select four classical network measures : the degree of nodes, the clustering coefficient, the assortativity, and the betweenness centrality. These measures were used to analyse different type of networks such as social networks, biological networks, world wide web, etc. Interestingly, we identify significant differences between the structure of the binary and the weighted niche-overlap graphs. This study indicates that weight information reveals different features that may provide other implications on the dynamics of these networks
The First VERITAS Telescope
The first atmospheric Cherenkov telescope of VERITAS (the Very Energetic
Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) has been in operation since February
2005. We present here a technical description of the instrument and a summary
of its performance. The calibration methods are described, along with the
results of Monte Carlo simulations of the telescope and comparisons between
real and simulated data. The analysis of TeV -ray observations of the
Crab Nebula, including the reconstructed energy spectrum, is shown to give
results consistent with earlier measurements. The telescope is operating as
expected and has met or exceeded all design specifications.Comment: Accepted by Astroparticle Physic
Geographical and climatic limits of needle types of one- and two-needled pinyon pines
Aim The geographical extent and climatic tolerances of one- and two-needled pinyon pines (Pinus subsect. Cembroides) are the focus of questions in taxonomy, palaeoclimatology and modelling of future distributions. The identification of these pines, traditionally classified by one- versus two-needled fascicles, is complicated by populations with both one- and two-needled fascicles on the same tree, and the description of two more recently described one-needled varieties: the fallax-type and californiarum-type. Because previous studies have suggested correlations between needle anatomy and climate, including anatomical plasticity reflecting annual precipitation, we approached this study at the level of the anatomy of individual pine needles rather than species.
Location Western North America.
Methods We synthesized available and new data from field and herbarium collections of needles to compile maps of their current distributions across western North America. Annual frequencies of needle types were compared with local precipitation histories for some stands. Historical North American climates were modeled on a c. 1-km grid using monthly temperature and precipitation values. A geospatial model (ClimLim), which analyses the effect of climate modulated physiological and ecosystem processes, was used to rank the importance of seasonal climate variables in limiting the distributions of anatomical needle types.
Results The pinyon needles were classified into four distinct types based upon the number of needles per fascicle, needle thickness and the number of stomatal rows and resin canals. The individual needles fit well into four categories of needle types, whereas some trees exhibit a mixture of two needle types. Trees from central Arizona containing a mixture of Pinus edulis and fallax-type needles increased their percentage of fallax-type needles following dry years. All four needle types occupy broader geographical regions with distinctive precipitation regimes. Pinus monophylla and californiarum-type needles occur in regions with high winter precipitation. Pinus edulis and fallax-type needles are found in regions with high monsoon precipitation. Areas supporting californiarum-type and fallax-type needle distributions are additionally characterized by a more extreme May–June drought.
Main conclusions These pinyon needle types seem to reflect the amount and seasonality of precipitation. The single needle fascicle characterizing the fallax type may be an adaptation to early summer or periodic drought, while the single needle of Pinus monophylla may be an adaptation to summer–autumn drought. Although the needles fit into four distinct categories, the parent trees are sometimes less easily classified, especially near their ancestral Pleistocene ranges in the Mojave and northern Sonoran deserts. The abundance of trees with both one- and two-needled fascicles in the zones between P. monophylla, P. edulis and fallax-type populations suggest that needle fascicle number is an unreliable characteristic for species classification. Disregarding needle fascicle number, the fallax-type needles are nearly identical to P. edulis, supporting Little’s (1968) initial classification of these trees as P. edulis var. fallax, while the californiarum-type needles have a distinctive morphology supporting Bailey’s (1987) classification of this tree as Pinus californiarum
Modelling thirty-day mortality in the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in an adult ICU
Publisher's copy made available with the permission of the publisher © Australian Society of AnaesthetistsVariables predicting thirty-day outcome from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) were analysed using Cox regression structured for time-varying covariates. Over a three-year period, 1996-1998, consecutive patients with ARDS (bilateral chest X-ray opacities, PaO₂/FiO₂ ratio of <200 and an acute precipitating event) were identified using a prospective computerized data base in a university teaching hospital ICU. The cohort, 106 mechanically ventilated patients, was of mean (SD) age 63.5 (15.5) years and 37% were female. Primary lung injury occurred in 45% and 24% were postoperative. ICU-admission day APACHE II score was 25 (8); ARDS onset time from ICU admission was 1 day (median: range 0-16) and 30 day mortality was 41% (95% CI: 33%-51%). At ARDS onset, PaO₂/FiO₂ ratio was 92 (31), 81% had four-quadrant chest X-ray opacification and lung injury score was 2.75 (0.45). Average mechanical ventilator tidal volume was 10.3 ml/ predicted kg weight. Cox model mortality predictors (hazard ratio, 95% CI) were: APACHE II score, 1.15 (1.09-1.21); ARDS lag time (days), 0.72 (0.58-0.89); direct versus indirect injury, 2.89 (1.45-5.76); PaO₂/FiO₂ ratio, 0.98 (0.97-0.99); operative versus non-operative category, 0.24 (0.09-0.63). Time-varying effects were evident for PaO₂/FiO₂ ratio, operative versus non-operative category and ventilator tidal volume assessed as a categorical predictor with a cut-point of 8 ml/kg predicted weight (mean tidal volumes, 7.1 (1.9) vs 10.7 (1.6) ml/kg predicted weight). Thirty-day survival was improved for patients ventilated with lower tidal volumes. Organic Superconductors: when correlations and magnetism walk in
This survey provides a brief account for the start of organic
superconductivity motivated by the quest for high Tc superconductors and its
development since the eighties'. Besides superconductivity found in 1D organics
in 1980, progresses in this field of research have contributed to better
understand the physics of low dimensional conductors highlighted by the wealth
of new remarkable properties. Correlations conspire to govern the low
temperature properties of the metallic phase. The contribution of
antiferromagnetic fluctuations to the interchain Cooper pairing proposed by the
theory is borne out by experimental investigations and supports
supercondutivity emerging from a non Fermi liquid background. Quasi one
dimensional organic superconductors can therefore be considered as simple
