    The design and construction of a telescope mount for a wide field polarimeter

    This thesis describes the design, construction and operation of a prototype wide field polarimeter to be used in large scale polarisation studies of the sky. A personal computer controls the stepper motors which drive an equatorial mount arrangement, whilst a lap top computer controls the CCD camera software. The third, fourth and fifth chapters describe the initial design process. The sixth chapter describes in detail the final design of the telescope mount. The seventh chapter gives an insight into how the structure was fabricated. Finally, the thesis describes the commissioning and operation of the telescope mount, with a section incorporating some results obtained from observing Jupiter

    Determining the grain geometry from ultrasonic measurements of large-grained temperate ice cores

    Ice shelf collapse significantly contributes to the global rise of sea levels. This intricate process of fracturing, though not yet fully understood, is intertwined with the mechanical attributes of ice. Among the critical physical attributes related to its mechanical characteristics is the crystal orientation fabric (COF), which encapsulates the dimensions, orientations, and inclinations of the constituent crystal grains within the ice structure. The acquisition of such granular information necessitates the extraction of ice cores from the ice sheets or shelves, followed by their transportation to a controlled laboratory environment. After this, these cores are sectioned into submillimetre slices and examined using polarised light microscopy (PLM). However, this procedure destroys the ice core specimens and only permits the acquisition of two-dimensional images, imparting only a partial depiction of the three-dimensional COF.The principal objective of this work is to explore the possibility of involving ultrasound technology to discern the crystal grains' COF and their geometries. This novel approach does not harm the sample material during the examination

    The effect of ice rubble on ice-ice sliding

    Ice deformation processes in the Arctic can generate ice rubble. Many situations arise where ice fragments of varying size separate sea ice floes. While the shear forces between sea ice floes in direct contact with each other are controlled by ice-ice friction, what is not known is how the slip of the floes is affected by the presence of rubble between the sliding surfaces. We present the result of field experiments undertaken on sea ice in the Barents Sea. A doubledirect-shear experiment was done on floating sea ice in the field, with the addition of rubble ice between the sliding surfaces. This was achieved by pulling a floating ice block through a cut channel of open water 3m long, where broken ice filled the gap between the block and the channel sides. The displacement of the block and the force needed to move the block were measured. The time that the block was held motionless to allow the rubble to consolidate was recorded - this ranged from seconds to several hours. We found that the 'hold time' controls the maximum force needed to move the block. The relation between hold time and force is highly non-linear from which we deduce thermal consolidation is the controlling mechanism

    Sea Ice Dynamics: The Role Of Broken Ice In Multi-scale Deformation

    Realistic models of Arctic Ocean behaviour should capture the influence of broken ice acting as a fault gouge between sliding floes. We performed double-direct shear friction tests on floating saline ice floes in the HSVA ARCTECLAB, Large Model Basin, Hamburg. We have focused these experiments on angularity and size to determine fault gouge characteristics. In our experiments the displacements and deformation of ice gouge were characterized during on-going frictional slip for the first time. Both stable sliding and stickslip behaviour were displayed. It appears that there are controls on behaviour according to gouge angularity. By measuring local stress, strain and acoustic emissions along the sliding interfacial fault we have captured the mechanics of the propagation of slip from slip initiation to dynamic propagation for the first time in the presence of broken ice

    Novel wireless sensors for in situ measurement of sub-ice hydrologic systems

    Wireless sensors have the potential to provide significant insight into in situ physical and biogeochemical processes in sub-ice hydrologic systems. However, the nature of the glacial environment means that sensor deployment and data return is challenging. We describe two bespoke sensor platforms, electronic tracers or ‘ETracers’, and ‘cryoegg’, for untethered, wireless data collection from glacial hydrologic systems, including subglacial channels. Both employ radio frequencies for data transmission, are designed to endure harsh environmental conditions and can withstand low temperatures, high pressure, turbulence and abrasion. We discuss the design, optimization and field testing of the ETracers and cryoegg, culminating in test deployments beneath the Greenland ice sheet. The small, low-cost ETracers were able to travel through subglacial drainage channels, from where they returned water pressure measurements through 100m of ice, and could measure water depth in crevasses. The larger cryoegg was able to return multi-parameter data from moulins through 500m of wet ice to receivers up to 2km away, and from 12m depth in a proglacial lake to a receiver on the shore. The tests demonstrate that the cryoegg and ETracers are low-power, versatile, robust wireless sensor platforms suitable for glacial environments, which may be used with portable, low-cost receiving equipment

    Assessing the utility of acoustic communication for wireless sensors deployed beneath ice sheets

    The environments underneath ice sheets are of high scientific interest. Wireless sensors offer the prospect of sustained, distributed remote sensing in the subglacial environment. Typically, wireless sensor networks use radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic communications, but these are highly attenuated in wet environments. In such environments, acoustic communications may be more power-efficient. Here we review the literature on acoustic and RF attenuation through ice and other relevant media, and present the results of new experiments on acoustic attenuation in glacial ice. Link budgets for communications from a range of subglacial environments show that acoustic communications are a viable strategy for transmission through water and ice where RF is too highly attenuated to be detected. Acoustic communication at 30 kHz is predicted to be possible through 1 km of glacial ice, using a 1 W transmitter. Such a strategy may be appropriate for shallow ice-stream environments around the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet margins

    Complex WKB Analysis of a PT Symmetric Eigenvalue Problem

    The spectra of a particular class of PT symmetric eigenvalue problems has previously been studied, and found to have an extremely rich structure. In this paper we present an explanation for these spectral properties in terms of quantisation conditions obtained from the complex WKB method. In particular, we consider the relation of the quantisation conditions to the reality and positivity properties of the eigenvalues. The methods are also used to examine further the pattern of eigenvalue degeneracies observed by Dorey et al. in [1,2].Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures. Added references, minor revision

    Markers of assimilation of problematic experiences in dementia within the LivDem project

This study aimed to determine whether the Markers of Assimilation of Problematic Experiences in Dementia scale (MAPED) can be used to identify whether the way in which participants talk about dementia changed during the group. All eight sessions of a LivDem group, which were attended by participants were recorded and transcribed. An initial analysis identified 160 extracts, which were then rated using the MAPED system. Inter-rater reliability was 61% and following a resolution meeting, 35 extracts were discarded, leaving 125 extracts with an agreed marker code. All of the participants were identified as producing a speech marker relating to dementia, and these varied between 0 (warding off) to 6 (problem solution). Examples of these markers are provided. The proportion of emergence markers (indicating the initial stages of assimilation) compared to later markers changed significantly between the first four sessions and the final sessions. This difference was still significant even when the markers produced by the most verbal participant, Graham, were excluded. The use of process measures within psychotherapy complements more conventional outcome measures and has both theoretical and clinical implications
