Writing Strategies and Older Students with Learning Disabilities
This review focuses on literature dealing with strategies for writing for older students with learning disabilities. Specifically, the literature in this review deals with strategies that have developed from both cognitive/motivational conceptualizations, which looks at aspects of writing such as student ability and mental processes, and social/contextual conceptualizations, which looks at collaboration and the writing environment (Graham & Harris, 2011) . In the following three sections, I will provide a brief summary and critical analysis of five articles regarding writing strategies for high school students with learning disabilities, a discussion of the overall findings from these five articles, and implications for leadership responsibilities
Nucleation and growth control in protein crystallization
The five topics summarized in this final report are as follows: (1) a technique for the expedient, semi-automated determination of protein solubilities as a function of temperature and application of this technique to proteins other than lysozyme; (2) a small solution cell with adjustable temperature gradients for the growth of proteins at a predetermined location through temperature programming; (3) a microscopy system with image storage and processing capability for high resolution optical studies of temperature controlled protein growth and etching kinetics; (4) growth experiments with lysozyme in thermosyphon flow ; and (5) a mathematical model for the evolution of evaporation/diffusion induced concentration gradients in the hanging drop protein crystallization technique
A physically-based model of the ionizing radiation from active galaxies for photoionization modeling
We present a simplified model of Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) continuum
emission designed for photoionization modeling. The new model {\sc oxaf}
reproduces the diversity of spectral shapes that arise in physically-based
models. We identify and explain degeneracies in the effects of AGN parameters
on model spectral shapes, with a focus on the complete degeneracy between the
black hole mass and AGN luminosity. Our re-parametrized model {\sc oxaf}
removes these degeneracies and accepts three parameters which directly describe
the output spectral shape: the energy of the peak of the accretion disk
emission , the photon power-law index of the non-thermal
emission , and the proportion of the total flux which is emitted in the
non-thermal component . The parameter is
presented as a function of the black hole mass, AGN luminosity, and `coronal
radius' of the {\sc optxagnf} model upon which {\sc oxaf} is based. We show
that the soft X-ray excess does not significantly affect photoionization
modeling predictions of strong emission lines in Seyfert narrow-line regions.
Despite its simplicity, {\sc oxaf} accounts for opacity effects where the
accretion disk is ionized because it inherits the `color correction' of {\sc
optxagnf}. We use a grid of {\sc mappings} photoionization models with {\sc
oxaf} ionizing spectra to demonstrate how predicted emission-line ratios on
standard optical diagnostic diagrams are sensitive to each of the three {\sc
oxaf} parameters. The {\sc oxaf} code is publicly available in the Astrophysics
Source Code Library.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in Ap
The mass-metallicity relation of local active galaxies
We systematically measure the gas-phase metallicities and the
mass-metallicity relation of a large sample of local active galaxies for the
first time. Observed emission-line fluxes from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS) are compared to a four-dimensional grid of photoionization models using
the Bayesian parameter estimation code NebulaBayes. For the first time we take
into account arbitrary mixing between HII region and narrow-line region (NLR)
emission, and the models are also varied with metallicity, ionization parameter
in the NLR, and the gas pressure. The active galactic nucleus (AGN) oxygen
abundance is found to increase by dex as a function
of host galaxy stellar mass over the range .
We also measure the metallicity and ionization parameter of 231000 star-forming
galaxies for comparison with the sample of 7670 Seyfert 2 galaxies. A
systematic offset in oxygen abundance of 0.09 dex is observed between the
mass-metallicity relations of the star-forming and active galaxies. We
investigate potential causes of the offset, including sample selection and the
treatment in the models of diffuse ionized gas, pressure, and ionization
parameter. We cannot identify the major cause(s), but suspect contributions due
to deficiencies in modeling the ionizing spectra and the treatment of dust
physics. Optical diagnostic diagrams are presented with the star-forming and
Seyfert data colored by the inferred oxygen abundance, ionization parameter and
gas pressure, clearly illustrating the trends in these quantities.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures and 1 table; accepted for publication in Ap
Allele-specific expression and eQTL analysis in mouse adipose tissue.
BackgroundThe simplest definition of cis-eQTLs versus trans, refers to genetic variants that affect expression in an allele specific manner, with implications on underlying mechanism. Yet, due to technical limitations of expression microarrays, the vast majority of eQTL studies performed in the last decade used a genomic distance based definition as a surrogate for cis, therefore exploring local rather than cis-eQTLs.ResultsIn this study we use RNAseq to explore allele specific expression (ASE) in adipose tissue of male and female F1 mice, produced from reciprocal crosses of C57BL/6J and DBA/2J strains. Comparison of the identified cis-eQTLs, to local-eQTLs, that were obtained from adipose tissue expression in two previous population based studies in our laboratory, yields poor overlap between the two mapping approaches, while both local-eQTL studies show highly concordant results. Specifically, local-eQTL studies show ~60% overlap between themselves, while only 15-20% of local-eQTLs are identified as cis by ASE, and less than 50% of ASE genes are recovered in local-eQTL studies. Utilizing recently published ENCODE data, we also find that ASE genes show significant bias for SNPs prevalence in DNase I hypersensitive sites that is ASE direction specific.ConclusionsWe suggest a new approach to analysis of allele specific expression that is more sensitive and accurate than the commonly used fisher or chi-square statistics. Our analysis indicates that technical differences between the cis and local-eQTL approaches, such as differences in genomic background or sex specificity, account for relatively small fraction of the discrepancy. Therefore, we suggest that the differences between two eQTL mapping approaches may facilitate sorting of SNP-eQTL interactions into true cis and trans, and that a considerable portion of local-eQTL may actually represent trans interactions
The chromatin remodeller ACF acts as a dimeric motor to space nucleosomes.
Evenly spaced nucleosomes directly correlate with condensed chromatin and gene silencing. The ATP-dependent chromatin assembly factor (ACF) forms such structures in vitro and is required for silencing in vivo. ACF generates and maintains nucleosome spacing by constantly moving a nucleosome towards the longer flanking DNA faster than the shorter flanking DNA. How the enzyme rapidly moves back and forth between both sides of a nucleosome to accomplish bidirectional movement is unknown. Here we show that nucleosome movement depends cooperatively on two ACF molecules, indicating that ACF functions as a dimer of ATPases. Further, the nucleotide state determines whether the dimer closely engages one or both sides of the nucleosome. Three-dimensional reconstruction by single-particle electron microscopy of the ATPase-nucleosome complex in an activated ATP state reveals a dimer architecture in which the two ATPases face each other. Our results indicate a model in which the two ATPases work in a coordinated manner, taking turns to engage either side of a nucleosome, thereby allowing processive bidirectional movement. This novel dimeric motor mechanism differs from that of dimeric motors such as kinesin and dimeric helicases that processively translocate unidirectionally and reflects the unique challenges faced by motors that move nucleosomes
