Submillimeter Imaging of NGC 891 with SHARC

    Get PDF
The advent of submillimeter wavelength array cameras operating on large ground-based telescopes is revolutionizing imaging at these wavelengths, enabling high-resolution submillimeter surveys of dust emission in star-forming regions and galaxies. Here we present a recent 350 micron image of the edge-on galaxy NGC 891, which was obtained with the Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC) at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). We find that high resolution submillimeter data is a vital complement to shorter wavelength satellite data, which enables a reliable separation of the cold dust component seen at millimeter wavelengths from the warmer component which dominates the far-infrared (FIR) luminosity.Comment: 4 pages LaTeX, 2 EPS figures, with PASPconf.sty; to appear in "Astrophysics with Infrared Surveys: A Prelude to SIRTF

Compact Q-balls and Q-shells in a scalar electrodynamics

We investigate spherically symmetric non topological solitons in electrodynamics with a scalar field self interaction U ~|\psi| taken from the complex signum-Gordon model. We find Q-balls for small absolute values of the total electric charge Q, and Q-shells when |Q| is large enough. In both cases the charge density exactly vanishes outside certain compact region in the three dimensional space. The dependence of the total energy E of small Q-balls on the total electric charge has the form E ~ |Q|^(5/6), while in the case of very large Q-shells E ~ |Q|^(7/6).Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure

Emotionol maturity, self-concept, and juvenile delinquency examined on 120 middle adolescents. Researcher developed three research instrament of measurement, namely the scale of juvenile delinquency, the scale of emotional maturity, and the self-concept scale. Data analyzed with the multiple regression. Varians proportion of juvenile delinquency can be explained through the emotional maturity and self-concept. Emotional moturity and self-concept simultaneously predict delinquency in undirectional and linear relationships; Emotional maturity is a psychological capacity that has the potential to allow a decline in juvenile delinquency; Self-concept is a psychological capacity that no potential to allow the reducticn or increase in juvenile delinquency. Juvenile delinquency data not normally distributed and relativety high. Prediction research, findings apply only to groups of adolescents with high delinquency, rates. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for middle adolescent in context

Build Testbenches for Verification in Shift Register ICs using SystemVerilog

    Get PDF
A testbench is built to verify a functionality of a shift register IC (Integrated Circuit) from stuck-at-faults, stuck-at-1 as well as stuck-at-0. The testbench is supported by components, i.e., generator, interface, driver, monitor, scoreboard, environment, test, and testbench top. The IC consists of sequential logic circuits of D-type flip-flops. The faults may occur at interconnects between the circuits inside the IC. In order to examine the functionality from the faults, both the testbench and the IC are designed using SystemVerilog and simulated using Questasim simulator. Simulation results show the faults may be detected by the testbench. Moreover, the detected faults may be indicated by error statements in transcript results of the simulato

Assessment of human risk for yersinosis after consumption of Danish produced non-heat-treated ready-to-eat pork products

    Get PDF
The objectives were to evaluate the risk of obtaining an infective dose of Yersinia enterocolitica (Y. enterocolitica) after consuming fermented sausages (made in a controlled process) and smoked filet made of Danish pork. For fermented sausages it was estimated that a maximum of two bacteria would be present in a serving of up to 40 g. However, most likely only one bacterium would be present per serving (4,000 times of one million simulations of 40 g serving’s = 0.4 %)

Volcanic ash had an acidic pH may degrade agricultural lands and the result of shallot production. The composition of giving about the volcanic ash, rice husk charcoal and rice straw compos canhelp the availability of nutrients through the release of organic acids thereby creating a plantingmedium that supports the growth and production of shallot. The objective of the research was todetermine the effect of composition of giving about the volcanic ash, rice husk charcoal and strawcompost on the growth of shallot. The research was done at experimental field of AgriculturalFaculty, University of Sumatera Utara, Medan in July-September 2014. The research usedrandomize block design with seven treathments and three replications. This study used arandomized block design Non Factorial with ten treatments and three replications. Parameterobserved were tillers number, wet weight per sample, wet weight per plot, dry weight per sample, dry weight per plot. The results of research showed that the composition of giving about thevolcanic ash, rice husk charcoal and straw compost influence significantly the parameters of tillersnumber 4 MST. There are no significant different for wet weight per sample, wet weight per plot, dry weight per sample, dry weight per plot.. The composition of giving volcanic ash 5 ton/ha + ricehusk charcoal 5 ton/ha + straw compost 3,75 ton/ha was the the best composition to produce tillersnumber of shallots

First astronomical detection of the CF+ ion

We report the first astronomical detection of the CF+ (fluoromethylidynium) ion obtained by recent observations of its J = 1 - 0 (102.6 GHz), J = 2 - 1 (205.2 GHz), and J = 3 - 2 (307.7 GHz) pure rotational emissions toward the Orion Bar. Our search for CF+, carried out using the IRAM 30m and APEX 12m telescopes, was motivated by recent theoretical models that predict CF+ abundances of a few x E-10 in UV-irradiated molecular regions where C+ is present. The measurements confirm the predictions. They provide support for our current theories of interstellar fluorine chemistry, which suggest that hydrogen fluoride should be ubiquitous in interstellar gas clouds.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure (uses iaus.sty), to appear in IAU Symposium No. 231, Astrochemistry - Recent Successes and Current Challenges, eds.
