Correlated X-ray/Ultraviolet/Optical variability in the very low mass AGN NGC 4395
We report the results of a one year Swift X-ray/UV/optical programme
monitoring the dwarf Seyfert nucleus in NGC 4395 in 2008-2009. The UV/optical
flux from the nucleus was found to vary dramatically over the monitoring
period, with a similar pattern of variation in each of the observed UV/optical
bands (spanning 1900 - 5500 {\AA}). In particular, the luminosity of NGC 4395
in the 1900 {\AA} band changed by more than a factor of eight over the
monitoring period. The fractional variability was smaller in the UV/optical
bands than that seen in the X-rays, with the X-ray/optical ratio increasing
with increasing flux. Pseudo-instantaneous flux measurements in the X-ray and
each UV/optical band were well correlated, with cross correlation coefficients
of >0.7, significant at 99.9 per cent confidence. Archival Swift observations
from 2006 sample the intra-day X-ray/optical variability on NGC 4395. These
archival data show a very strong correlation between the X-ray and b bands,
with a cross-correlation coefficient of 0.84 (significant at >99 per cent
confidence). The peak in the cross correlation function is marginally resolved
and asymmetric, suggesting that X-rays lead the b band, but by 1 hour. In
response to recent (August 2011) very high X-ray flux levels from NGC4395 we
triggered Swift ToO observations, which sample the intra-hour X-ray/UV
variability. These observations indicate, albeit with large uncertainties, a
lag of the 1900 {\AA} band behind the X-ray flux of ~400 s. The tight
correlation between the X-ray and UV/optical lightcurves, together with the
constraints we place on lag time-scale are consistent with the UV/optical
variability of NGC 4395 being primarily due to reprocessing of X-ray photons by
the accretion disc.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Conducting polymer- hydrogel blends for electrochemically controlled drug release devices
Blends formed by electrochemical polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy) into polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels were used as devices for controlled drug release. The influence of several parameters in the synthesis, such as type of hydrogel matrix and polymerization conditions was studied by using a fractional factorial design. The final goal was to obtain an adequate device for use in controlled release tests, based on electrochemical potential control. For controlled release tests, Safranin was used as model drug and release curves (amount of drug vs. time) have shown that these blends are promising materials for this use. The optimized blends obtained were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy.
RISK BEHAVIOURS OF PORTUGUESE ADOLESCENTS AND ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCE
How Lyman Alpha Emission Depends On Galaxy Stellar Mass
In this work, we show how the stellar mass (M) of galaxies affects the
3<z<4.6 Ly-alpha equivalent width (EW) distribution. To this end, we design a
sample of 629 galaxies in the M range 7.6 < logM/Msun < 10.6 from the
3D-HST/CANDELS survey. We perform spectroscopic observations of this sample
using the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System, allowing us to measure Ly-alpha
fluxes and use 3D-HST/CANDELS ancillary data. In order to study the Ly-alpha EW
distribution dependence on M, we split the whole sample in three stellar mass
bins. We find that, in all bins, the distribution is best represented by an
exponential profile of the form dN(M)/dEW= A(M)exp(-EW/W0(M))/W0(M). Through a
Bayesian analysis, we confirm that lower M galaxies have higher Ly-alpha EWs.
We also find that the fraction A of galaxies featuring emission and the
e-folding scale W0 of the distribution anti- correlate with M, recovering
expressions of the forms A(M)= -0.26(.13) logM/Msun+3.01(1.2) and W0(M)=
-15.6(3.5) logM/Msun +166(34). These results are crucial for proper
interpretation of Ly-alpha emission trends reported in the literature that may
be affected by strong M selection biases.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
