    Implementing virtual collaborative inquiry practises in a middle-school context

    The aim of the present study was to investigate the challenges that relate to the implementation of virtual inquiry practises in middle school. The case was a school course in which a group of Finnish students (N = 14) and teachers (N = 7) completed group inquiries through virtual collaboration, using a web-based learning environment. The task was to accomplish a cross-disciplinary inquiry into cultural issues. The students worked mainly at home and took much responsibility for their course achievements. The investigators analysed the pedagogical design of the course and the content of the participants' interaction patterns in the web-based environment, using qualitative content analysis and social network analysis. The findings suggest that the students succeeded in producing distinctive cultural products, and both the students and the teachers adopted novel roles during the inquiry. The web-based learning environment was used more as a coordination tool for organizing the collaborative work than as a forum for epistemic inquiry.     Detection methods predict differences in biology and survival in breast cancer patients

    BackgroundThe aim of this study was to measure the biological characteristics involved in tumorigenesis and the progression of breast cancer in symptomatic and screen-detected carcinomas to identify possible differences.MethodsFor this purpose, we evaluated clinical-pathological parameters and proliferative and apoptotic activities in a series of 130 symptomatic and 161 screen-detected tumors.ResultsAfter adjustment for the smaller size of the screen-detected carcinomas compared with symptomatic cancers, those detected in the screening program presented longer disease-free survival (RR = 0.43, CI = 0.19-0.96) and had high estrogen and progesterone receptor concentrations more often than did symptomatic cancers (OR = 3.38, CI = 1.72-6.63 and OR = 3.44, CI = 1.94-6.10, respectively). Furthermore, the expression of bcl-2, a marker of good prognosis in breast cancer, was higher and HER2/neu expression was lower in screen-detected cancers than in symptomatic cancers (OR = 1.77, CI = 1.01-3.23 and OR = 0.64, CI = 0.40-0.98, respectively). However, when comparing prevalent vs incident screen-detected carcinomas, prevalent tumors were larger (OR = 2.84, CI = 1.05-7.69), were less likely to be HER2/neu positive (OR = 0.22, CI = 0.08-0.61) and presented lower Ki67 expression (OR = 0.36, CI = 0.17-0.77). In addition, incident tumors presented a shorter survival time than did prevalent ones (RR = 4.88, CI = 1.12-21.19).ConclusionsIncident carcinomas include a variety of screen-detected carcinomas that exhibit differences in biology and prognosis relative to prevalent carcinomas. The detection method is important and should be taken into account when making therapy decisions

    p21/WAF1 expression in human colorectal carcinoma: association with p53, transcription factor AP-2 and prognosis

    p21/WAF1 expression was studied in a series of 162 colorectal carcinoma patients and its relation to p53- and activator protein (AP)-2 expressions and to stage as well as survival was assessed. p21 expression was moderate or intense in 33% of the tumours, and 53% of the tumours had moderate or strong p53 staining intensity. Eighty-nine percent of the tumours showed a weak cytoplasmic AP-2 signal. As expected, p21 and p53 stainings were inversely related to each other (P < 0.001). There was a significant positive association between p21 and AP-2 expression levels (P = 0.01). p21 intensity and percentage were higher in Dukes' A and B stages (P < 0.001). The cancer-related survival and recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were significantly lower among patients with a low signal for p21 (P < 0.001) and low p21 percentage in tumour epithelium (P < 0.001). High p53 staining intensity in tumour epithelium predicted poor survival (P = 0.01) and RFS (P = 0.003). In the multivariate analysis, p21 percentage distribution independently predicted cancer-related survival in all cases, and p21 expression intensity in T1–4/N0–3/M0 and T1–3/N0/M0 cases. p21 percentage distribution was an independent predictor of RFS in all and T1–3/ N0/M0 cases. AP-2 staining did not reach any prognostic significance. These results suggest that the immunohistochemical detection of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 could be used to predict more precisely the outcome of colorectal cancer patients. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
