Double Potts chain and exact results for some two-dimensional models
A closed-form exact analytical solution for the q-state Potts model on a
ladder 2 x oo with arbitrary two-, three-, and four-site interactions in a unit
cell is presented. Using the obtained solution it is shown that the finite-size
internal energy equation yields an accurate value of the critical temperature
for the triangular Potts lattice with three-site interactions in alternate
triangular faces. It is argued that the above equation is exact at least for
self-dual models on isotropic lattices.Comment: 13 pages in latex and 2 ps figures. preprint ICTP IC/2000/176; ZhETF

Slow dynamics and aging in a non-randomly frustrated spin system
A simple, non-disordered spin model has been studied in an effort to
understand the origin of the precipitous slowing down of dynamics observed in
supercooled liquids approaching the glass transition. A combination of Monte
Carlo simulations and exact calculations indicates that this model exhibits an
entropy vanishing transition accompanied by a rapid divergence of time scales.
Measurements of various correlation functions show that the system displays a
hierarchy of time scales associated with different degrees of freedom. Extended
structures, arising from the frustration in the system, are identified as the
source of the slow dynamics. In the simulations, the system falls out of
equilibrium at a temperature higher than the entropy-vanishing
transition temperature and the dynamics below exhibits aging as
distinct from coarsening. The cooling rate dependence of the energy is also
consistent with the usual glass formation scenario.Comment: 41 pages, 16 figures. Bibliography file is correcte
Is there a link between bacteriuria and a reversible encephalopathy in dogs and cats?
Bacteriuria has been associated with abnormal neurological status in humans, particularly the geriatric population. In this report, we review 11 cases (7 dogs and 4 cats) that support an association between bacteriuria and abnormal neurological status in veterinary medicine. The included cases presented with neurological deficits consistent with a diffuse forebrain ± brainstem localisation, in which structural brain disease was excluded with magnetic resonance imaging of the head and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, but in which urine bacteriological culture was positive, and neurological deficits improved or resolved with initiation of antibiosis ± fluid therapy and levetiracetam. While further studies are needed to definitively confirm or refute the link between bacteriuria and a reversible encephalopathy, urine bacteriological culture should be considered in veterinary patients presented with an acute onset forebrain (± brainstem) neuro-anatomical localisation, even in the absence of clinical signs of lower urinary tract inflammation
Structural Relaxation, Self Diffusion and Kinetic Heterogeneity in the Two Dimensional Lattice Coulomb Gas
We present Monte Carlo simulation results on the equilibrium relaxation
dynamics in the two dimensional lattice Coulomb gas, where finite fraction
of the lattice sites are occupied by positive charges. In the case of high
order rational values of close to the irrational number
( is the golden mean), we find that the system
exhibits, for wide range of temperatures above the first-order transition, a
glassy behavior resembling the primary relaxation of supercooled liquids.
Single particle diffusion and structural relaxation show that there exists a
breakdown of proportionality between the time scale of diffusion and that of
structural relaxation analogous to the violation of the Stokes-Einstein
relation in supercooled liquids. Suitably defined dynamic cooperativity is
calculated to exhibit the characteristic nature of dynamic heterogeneity
present in the system.Comment: 12 pages, 20 figure
Critical adsorption near edges
Symmetry breaking surface fields give rise to nontrivial and long-ranged
order parameter profiles for critical systems such as fluids, alloys or magnets
confined to wedges. We discuss the properties of the corresponding universal
scaling functions of the order parameter profile and the two-point correlation
function and determine the critical exponents eta_parallel and
eta_perpendicular for the so-called normal transition.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PR

The Mechanochemistry of Endocytosis
An integrated theoretical model reveals how the chemical and the mechanical aspects of endocytosis are coordinated coherently in yeast cells, driving progression through the endocytic pathway and ensuring efficient vesicle scission in vivo
Body appreciation around the world: Measurement invariance of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age.
The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.
