We report the first observation of two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes, Xi_c+ -> Sigma+ pi- pi+ and Xi_c+ -> Sigma- pi+ pi+. We observe 59+/-14 over a background of 87, and 22+/-8 over a background of 13 events, respectively, for the signals. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600GeV/c Sigma- beam. The branching ratios of the decays relative to the Cabibbo--favored Xi_c+ -> Xi- pi+ pi+ are measured to be B(Xi_c+ -> Sigma+ pi- pi+)/B(Xi_c+ -> Xi- pi+ pi+) = 0.48+/-0.20, and B(Xi_c+ -> Sigma- pi+ pi+)/B(Xi_c+ -> Xi- pi+ pi+) = 0.18+/-0.09, respectively. We also report branching ratios for the same decay modes of the Lambda_c+ relative to Lambda_c+ -> p K- pi+.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, version 2 as accepted in PL

U današnje vrijeme pronalazak i korištenje alternativnih goriva postaje sve veća potreba zbog onečišćenja zraka i okoliša te cjelokupnog ekosustava zbog prekomjernog korištenja fosilnih goriva. Nowadays, the invention and use of alternative fuels are becoming an increasing need due to air and environmental pollution and the entire ecosystem due to the excessive use of fossil fuels. The use of alternative fuels seeks to eliminate the use of fossil fuels that damage the ozone layer and lead, among other things, to global warming. This final paper deals with the topic of some of the alternative fuels with particular emphasis on hydrogen as one of the alternative fuels of the future and the relevant conventions of the European Union that apply to the Republic of Croatia as a full member of the EU. The construction of infrastructure and the methods of production, transport, storage and accessibility of these alternative fuels were also discussed

Evaluating the Short-Run Benefits of Six Department of Energy R&D Projects

    No full text
This paper evaluates the short-run benefits of research and development (R&D) projects funded by the Automotive Lightweighting Materials (ALM) Program of the Office of FreedomCAR and Vehicle Technologies of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The six ALM projects evaluated—using qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods—yielded numerous benefits in the short-run. From the qualitative assessment, all met their technical goals, increased intellectual knowledge among the research teams, and led to increased collaboration among DOE, the auto industry, its suppliers, and national laboratories. Moreover, U.S. competitiveness appeared to have increased as a result of each R&D effort. One interesting finding, however, is that most of the participants indicated their firms would not have engaged in the research efforts without DOE funding. If they had engaged in the effort, it would have been with considerably less person time and financial commitment. With respect to quantitative measures, several graduate students were supported by the projects and numerous publications and presentations resulted, although these metrics varied across the ALM R&D projects.
