    Does Sexist Language Reflect Personal Characteristics?

    We investigated whether or not sexist language in written form can be linked to traditional views of sex roles, assertiveness, psychological androgyny, Christian beliefs, or sexist language in oral form. In Experiment 1, undergraduates were given an essay designed to test written sexist language and several pencil-and-paper personality inventories. No relationship between sexist language and interpersonal assertiveness or psychological androgyny was found. However, those who avoided sexist language were less traditional in their sex role perceptions scored lower on a scale of Christian beliefs. In Experient 2, the method of measuring sexist language was expanded by using three essay responses and a brief oral interview. Those who used sexist language in written form were more likely than others to use sexist language in oral form on some responses. Interpretations and implications of the fmdings are discussed

    Ar-40/Ar-39 Ages of Maskelynite Grains from ALHA 77005

    We present Ar-40/Ar-39 measurements for twelve small (20-60 micro-g) maskelynite samples from the heavily shocked martian meteorite ALHA 77005. The reported modal composition for ALHA 77005 is 50-60% olivine (Fa28), 30-40% pyroxene (Wo5Fs23En72), approx.8% maskelynite (An53), and approx.2% opaques by volume [1]). The meteorite is usually classified as a lherzolite. Previous Studies - Ar-40/Ar-39 results from previous work display disturbed release spectra [2,3]. In study [2], Ar-40/Ar-39 measurements on a 52-mg whole-rock sample produced an extremely disturbed release spec-trum, with all calculated apparent ages > 1 Ga, (Fig. 1). In a subsequent study [3], a light and a dark phase were analyzed. A 2.3-mg sample of the light, relatively low-K phase produced a disturbed release spectrum. For the first 20% of the Ar-39(sub K), most of the apparent ages exceeded >1 Ga; the remaining 80% yielded ages between 0.3-0.5 Ga. The integrated age for this phase is 0.9 Ga

    Development of optimized conditions for Glaser-Hay bioconjugations

    The efficient preparation of protein bioconjugates represents a route to novel materials, diagnostics, and therapeutics. We previously reported a novel bioorthogonal Glaser-Hay reaction for the preparation of covalent linkages between proteins and a reaction partner; however, deleterious protein degradation was observed under extended reaction conditions. Herein, we describe the systematic optimization of the reaction to increase coupling efficiency and decrease protein degradation. Two optimized conditions were identified varying either the pH of the reaction or the bidentate ligand employed, allowing for more rapid conjugations and/or less protein oxidation.     Maps of Solar Wind Plasma Precipitation onto Mercury’s Surface: A Geographical Perspective

    Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, possesses a weak intrinsic magnetic field, and has only a very tenuous atmosphere (exosphere). These three conditions result in a direct coupling between the plasma emitted from the Sun (namely, the solar wind) and Mercury’s surface. The planet’s magnetic field leads to a nontrivial pattern of plasma precipitation onto the surface that is expected to contribute to the alteration of the regolith over geological timescales. The goal of this work is to study the solar wind plasma precipitation onto the surface of Mercury from a geographical perspective, as opposed to the local time-of-day approach of previous precipitation modeling studies. We employ solar wind precipitation maps for protons and electrons from two fully kinetic numerical simulations of Mercury’s plasma environment. These maps are then integrated over two full Mercury orbits (176 Earth days). We found that the plasma precipitation pattern at the surface is most strongly affected by the upstream solar wind conditions, particularly the interplanetary magnetic field direction, and less by Mercury’s 3:2 spin-orbit resonance. We also found that Mercury’s magnetic field is able to shield the surface from roughly 90% of the incoming solar wind flux. At the surface, protons have a broad energy distribution from below 500 eV to more than 1.5 keV, while electrons are mostly found in the range 0.1-10 keV. These results will help to better constrain space weathering and exosphere source processes at Mercury, as well as interpret observations by the ongoing ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission

    FOS Expression in Osteoid Osteoma and Osteoblastoma: A Valuable Ancillary Diagnostic Tool

    Osteoblastoma and osteoid osteoma together are the most frequent benign bone-forming tumor, arbitrarily separated by size. In some instances, it can be difficult to differentiate osteoblastoma from osteosarcoma. Following our recent description of FOS gene rearrangement in these tumors, the aim of this study is to evaluate the value of immunohistochemistry in osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, and osteosarcoma for diagnostic purposes. A total of 337 cases were tested with antibodies against c-FOS: 84 osteoblastomas, 33 osteoid osteomas, 215 osteosarcomas, and 5 samples of reactive new bone formation. In all, 83% of osteoblastomas and 73% of osteoid osteoma showed significant expression of c-FOS in the osteoblastic tumor cell component. Of the osteosarcomas, 14% showed c-FOS expression, usually focal, and in areas with severe morphologic atypia which were unequivocally malignant: 4% showed more conspicuous expression, but these were negative for FOS gene rearrangement. We conclude that c-FOS immunoreactivity is present in the vast majority of osteoblastoma/osteoid osteoma, whereas its expression is usually focal or patchy, in no more than 14% of osteosarcoma biopsies. Therefore, any bone-forming tumor cases with worrying histologic features would benefit from fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis for FOS gene rearrangement. Our findings highlight the importance of undertaking a thorough assessment of expression patterns of antibodies in the light of morphologic, clinical, and radiologic features

    DNA assays for genetic discrimination of three Phragmites australis subspecies in the United States

    Premise: To genetically discriminate subspecies of the common reed (Phragmites australis), we developed real-time quantitative (qPCR) assays for identifying P. australis subsp. americanus, P. australis subsp. australis, and P. australis subsp. berlandieri. Methods and Results: Utilizing study-generated chloroplast DNA sequences, we developed three novel qPCR assays. Assays were verified on individuals of each subspecies and against two non-target species, Arundo donax and Phalaris arundinacea. One assay amplifies only P. australis subsp. americanus, one amplifies P. australis subsp. australis and/or P. australis subsp. berlandieri, and one amplifies P. australis subsp. americanus and/or P. australis subsp. australis. This protocol enhances currently available rapid identification methods by providing genetic discrimination of all three subspecies. Conclusions: The newly developed assays were validated using P. australis samples from across the United States. Application of these assays outside of this geographic range should be preceded by additional testing
