    Timing of larval release by two Caribbean demosponges

    The timing of larval release has important implications for a larva's potential vulnerability to predators and environmental stresses. For larvae with planktonic periods of only minutes to hours, timing of larval release also determines the light levels that larvae experience, which can strongly influence their settlement behavior. We placed larval traps over colonies of 2 common Caribbean sponges and found that both species released larvae during daylight hours. Niphates digitalis generally releases its larvae between 07:00 and 11:00 h, while Callyspongia vaginalis releases its larvae later in the day. Of 17 captured N. digitalis larvae released 0.5 to i m above the substrate, 13 remained near the bottom, and 8 of these 13 contacted the substrate within 10 min. For shortlived larvae, daytime release and their photonegative behavior at settlement should drive them to settle in shaded microhabitats that protect juveniles from predators and Solar UV radiation. Larvae of N. digitalis and C. vaginalis are distasteful to potential predators; thus they can remain near the bottom with fishes and yet not be consumed. These data support a general co-occurrence of daytime spawning of conspicuous, short-lived larvae and larval distastefulness that previously had been noted only for tropical ascidians

    Cryptic Variation in Morphological Evolution: HSP90 as a Capacitor for Loss of Eyes in Cavefish

    In the process of morphological evolution, the extent to which cryptic, preexisting variation provides a substrate for natural selection has been controversial. We provide evidence that heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) phenotypically masks standing eye-size variation in surface populations of the cavefish Astyanax mexicanus. This variation is exposed by HSP90 inhibition and can be selected for, ultimately yielding a reduced-eye phenotype even in the presence of full HSP90 activity. Raising surface fish under conditions found in caves taxes the HSP90 system, unmasking the same phenotypic variation as does direct inhibition of HSP90. These results suggest that cryptic variation played a role in the evolution of eye loss in cavefish and provide the first evidence for HSP90 as a capacitor for morphological evolution in a natural setting

    Laue diffraction lenses for astrophysics: From theory to experiments

    Based on the laws of X-ray diffraction in crystals, Laue lenses offer a promising way to achieve the sensitivity and angular resolution leap required for the next generation of hard X-ray and gamma-ray telescopes. The present paper describes the instrumental responses of Laue diffraction lenses designed for nuclear astrophysics. Different possible geometries are discussed, as well as the corresponding spectral and imaging capabilities. These theoretical predictions are then compared with Monte-Carlo simulations and experimental results (ground and stratospheric observations from the CLAIRE project)

    Head-on collision of unequal mass black holes: close-limit predictions

    The close-limit method has given approximations in excellent agreement with those of numerical relativity for collisions of equal mass black holes. We consider here colliding holes with unequal mass, for which numerical relativity results are not available. We try to ask two questions: (i) Can we get approximate answers to astrophysical questions (ideal mass ratio for energy production, maximum recoil velocity, etc.), and (ii) can we better understand the limitations of approximation methods. There is some success in answering the first type of question, but more with the second, especially in connection with the issue of measures of the intrinsic mass of the colliding holes, and of the range of validity of the method.Comment: 19 pages, RevTeX + 9 postscript figure

    Crayfish feeding preferences for fresh water macrophytes: The influence of plant structure and chemistry

    The omnivorous crayfish Procambarus clarkii fed selectively on several species of macrophytes, preferring delicate fresh plants that had filamentous or finely-branched architectures. When the macrophytes were dried, powdered, and reconstituted into an alginate gel (thus eliminating among-species differences in physical characteristics). crayfish preferences were altered; previously tough plants that were high in nitrogen and protein were preferred over previously delicate plants that were low in nitrogen and protein. Even though plant structure influences feeding decision of crayfish, the structurally identical macrophyte gels were fed upon differently, demonstrating that nonstructural traits are important feeding determinants. However, plant tissue constituents such as nitrogen, protein, phenolics, lignin, cellulose, or ash were not significantly con-elated with feeding preferences. Two high-nitrogen plants that were avoided by crayfish as fresh and as reconstituted tissue (Nuphar luteum macrophyllum and Alternanthera philoxeroides) possessed extracts that reduced crayfish feeding in laboratory assays, demonstrating that macrophyte metabolites can deter some herbivores. As is often observed with large generalist herbivores and omnivores in terrestrial and marine systems, the freshwater crayfish made feeding decisions based upon multiple plant cues (structure, nutrition, chemical defenses)

    Cosmology of a brane radiating gravitons into the extra dimension

    We study in a self-consistent way the impact of the emission of bulk gravitons on the (homogeneous) cosmology of a three-brane embedded in a five-dimensional spacetime. In the low energy regime, we recover the well known result that the bulk affects the Friedmann equation only via a radiation-like term \C/a^4, called dark or Weyl radiation. By contrast, in the high energy regime, we find that the Weyl parameter \C is no longer constant but instead grows very rapidly as \C\propto a^4. As a consequence, the value of \C today is not a free parameter as usually considered but is a fixed number, which, generically, depends only on the number of relativistic degrees of freedom at the high/low energy transition. Our estimated amount of Weyl radiation satisfies the present nucleosynthesis bounds.Comment: 12 page

    Surface characterization and surface electronic structure of organic quasi-one-dimensional charge transfer salts

    We have thoroughly characterized the surfaces of the organic charge-transfer salts TTF-TCNQ and (TMTSF)2PF6 which are generally acknowledged as prototypical examples of one-dimensional conductors. In particular x-ray induced photoemission spectroscopy turns out to be a valuable non-destructive diagnostic tool. We show that the observation of generic one-dimensional signatures in photoemission spectra of the valence band close to the Fermi level can be strongly affected by surface effects.
