Carbon-13 and silicon-29 NMR spectra of some [tris(trimethylsilyl)methyl]-substituted silanes and related compounds
Fourier Transform 13C and 29Si NMR spectra are reported for series of [tris-(trimethylsilyl)methyl] dimethylsilanes, [tris(trimethylsilyl)methyl] diphenylsilanes, and for related compounds. Analysis of chemical shift values indicates that such information can be useful in determining the structure in these highly hindered, but structurally similar compounds. In particular, the carbon and silicon atoms of the trimethylsilyl groups absorb in a narrow shift range, while other carbon and silicon atoms more characteristically reflect the substitution patterns in these compounds.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/23894/1/0000133.pd
Why do Process Improvement Projects Fail in Organizations? A Review and Future Research Agenda
Purpose: The purpose of this article is to examine the Critical Failure Factors (CFFs) linked to various
types of Process improvement (PI) projects such as Kaizen, Lean, Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma and Agile.
Proposing a mitigation framework accordingly is also an aim of this study.
Design/ Methodology/ Approach: This research undertakes a systematic literature review of 49 articles
that were relevant to the scope of our study and that were published in four prominent databases including
Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science and EBSCO.
Findings: Further analysis identifies 39 factors that contribute to the failure of PI projects. Among these
factors, significant emphasis is placed on issues such as "resistance to cultural change," "insufficient
support from top management," "inadequate training and education," "poor communication," and "lack of
resources", as primary causes of PI project failures. To address and overcome the PI project failures, we
propose a framework for failure mitigation based on change management models. We present future
research directions that aim to enhance both the theoretical understanding and practical aspects of PI
project failures.
Practical Implications: Through this study researchers and project managers can benefit from well structured guidelines and invaluable insights that will help them identify and address potential failures,
leading to successful implementation and sustainable improvements within organizations.
Originality: This paper is the first study of its kind that examine the CFFs of five PI methodologies and
introduces a novel approach derived from change management theory as a solution to minimize the risk
associated with PI failure
Stimulation of Myofibrillar Protein Synthesis in Hindlimb Suspended Rats by Resistance Exercise and Growth Hormone
The objective of this study was to determine the ability of a single bout of resistance exercise alone or in combination with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) to stimulate myofibrillar protein synthesis (Ks) in hindlimb suspended (HLS) adult female rats. Plantar flexor muscles were stimulated with resistance exercise, consisting of 10 repetitions of ladder climbing on a 1 m grid (85 deg.), carrying an additional 50% of their body weight attached to their tails. Saline or rhGH (1 mg/kg) was administered 30' prior to exercise, and Ks was determined with a constant infusion of H-3-Leucine at 15', 60', 180', and 360' following exercise. Three days of HLS depressed Ks is approx. equal to 65% and 30-40% in the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles, respectively (p is less than or equal to 0.05). Exercise increased soleus Ks in saline-treated rats 149% 60' following exercise (p less than or equal to 0.05), decaying to that of non-exercised animals during the next 5 hours. Relative to suspended, non-exercised rats rhGH + exercise increased soleus Ks 84%, 108%, and 72% at 15', 60' and 360' following exercise (p is less than or equal to 0.05). Gastrocnemius Ks was not significantly increased by exercise or the combination of rhGH and exercise up to 360' post-exercise. Results from this study indicate that resistance exercise stimulated Ks 60' post-exercise in the soleus of HLS rats, with no apparent effect of rhGH to enhance or prolong exercise-induced stimulation. Results suggests that exercise frequency may be important to maintenance of the slow-twitch soleus during non-weightbearing, but that the ability of resistance exercise to maintain myofibrillar protein content in the gastrocnemius of hindlimb suspended rats cannot be explained by acute stimulation of synthesis
Study of the Dependency on Magnetic Field and Bias Voltage of an AC-Biased TES Microcalorimeter
At SRON we are studying the performance of a Goddard Space Flight Center single pixel TES microcalorimeter operated in an AC bias configuration. For x-ray photons at 6 keV the pixel shows an x-ray energy resolution Delta E(sub FWHM) = 3.7 eV, which is about a factor 2 worse than the energy resolution observed in an identical DC-biased pixel. In order to better understand the reasons for this discrepancy we characterized the detector as a function of temperature, bias working point and applied perpendicular magnetic field. A strong periodic dependency of the detector noise on the TES AC bias voltage is measured. We discuss the results in the framework of the recently observed weak-link behaviour of a TES microcalorimeter
Frequency and type of adverse analytical findings in athletics: Differences among disciplines.
Athletics is a highly diverse sport that contains a set of disciplines grouped into jumps,
throws, races of varying distances, and combined events. From a physiological standpoint,
the physical capabilities linked to success are quite different among
disciplines, with varying involvements of muscle strength, muscle power, and
endurance. Thus, the use of banned substances in athletics might be dictated by physical
dimensions of each discipline. Thus, the aim of this investigation was to
analyse the number and distribution of adverse analytical findings per drug class in
athletic disciplines. The data included in this investigation were gathered from the
Anti-Doping Testing Figure Report made available by the World Anti-Doping Agency
(from 2016 to 2018). Interestingly, there were no differences in the frequency of
adverse findings (overall, 0.95%, range from 0.77 to 1.70%) among disciplines
despite long distance runners having the highest number of samples analysed per year
( 9812 samples/year). Sprinters and throwers presented abnormally high
proportions of adverse analytical findings within the group of anabolic agents
(p < 0.01); middle- and long-distance runners presented atypically high proportions of
findings related to peptide hormones and growth factors (p < 0.01); racewalkers presented
atypically high proportions of banned diuretics and masking agents (p = 0.05).
These results suggest that the proportion of athletes that are using banned substances
is similar among the different disciplines of athletics. However, there are substantial
differences in the class of drugs more commonly used in each discipline. This information

Impact of receptor clustering on ligand binding
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cellular response to changes in the concentration of different chemical species in the extracellular medium is induced by ligand binding to dedicated transmembrane receptors. Receptor density, distribution, and clustering may be key spatial features that influence effective and proper physical and biochemical cellular responses to many regulatory signals. Classical equations describing this kind of binding kinetics assume the distributions of interacting species to be homogeneous, neglecting by doing so the impact of clustering. As there is experimental evidence that receptors tend to group in clusters inside membrane domains, we investigated the effects of receptor clustering on cellular receptor ligand binding.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We implemented a model of receptor binding using a Monte-Carlo algorithm to simulate ligand diffusion and binding. In some simple cases, analytic solutions for binding equilibrium of ligand on clusters of receptors are provided, and supported by simulation results. Our simulations show that the so-called "apparent" affinity of the ligand for the receptor decreases with clustering although the microscopic affinity remains constant.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Changing membrane receptors clustering could be a simple mechanism that allows cells to change and adapt its affinity/sensitivity toward a given stimulus.</p
Accelerating Community College Graduation Rates: A Benefit–Cost Analysis
This article reports a benefit–cost evaluation of the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) of the City University of New York (CUNY). ASAP was designed to accelerate associate degree completion within 3 years of degree enrollment at CUNY’s community colleges. The program evaluation revealed that the completion rate for the examined cohort increased from 24.1% to 54.9%, and cost per graduate declined considerably (Levin & Garcia, 2012; Linderman & Kolenovic, 2012). The returns on investment to the taxpayer include the benefits from higher tax revenues and lower costs of spending on public health, criminal justice, and public assistance. For each dollar of investment in ASAP by taxpayers, the return was 4. For each additional graduate, the taxpayer gained an amount equal to a certificate of deposit with a value of 46 million relative to enrolling in the conventional degree program. ASAP results demonstrate that an effective educational policy can generate returns to the taxpayer that vastly exceed the public investment required
A critical review of the research literature on Six Sigma, Lean and StuderGroup's Hardwiring Excellence in the United States: the need to demonstrate and communicate the effectiveness of transformation strategies in healthcare
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>U.S. healthcare organizations are confronted with numerous and varied transformational strategies promising improvements along all dimensions of quality and performance. This article examines the peer-reviewed literature from the U.S. for evidence of effectiveness among three current popular transformational strategies: Six Sigma, Lean/Toyota Production System, and Studer's Hardwiring Excellence.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The English language health, healthcare management, and organizational science literature (up to December 2007) indexed in Medline, Web of Science, ABI/Inform, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and ERIC was reviewed for studies on the aforementioned transformation strategies in healthcare settings. Articles were included if they: appeared in a peer-reviewed journal; described a specific intervention; were not classified as a pilot study; provided quantitative data; and were not review articles. Nine references on Six Sigma, nine on Lean/Toyota Production System, and one on StuderGroup meet the study's eligibility criteria.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The reviewed studies universally concluded the implementations of these transformation strategies were successful in improving a variety of healthcare related processes and outcomes. Additionally, the existing literature reflects a wide application of these transformation strategies in terms of both settings and problems. However, despite these positive features, the vast majority had methodological limitations that might undermine the validity of the results. Common features included: weak study designs, inappropriate analyses, and failures to rule out alternative hypotheses. Furthermore, frequently absent was any attention to changes in organizational culture or substantial evidence of lasting effects from these efforts.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Despite the current popularity of these strategies, few studies meet the inclusion criteria for this review. Furthermore, each could have been improved substantially in order to ensure the validity of the conclusions, demonstrate sustainability, investigate changes in organizational culture, or even how one strategy interfaced with other concurrent and subsequent transformation efforts. While informative results can be gleaned from less rigorous studies, improved design and analysis can more effectively guide healthcare leaders who are motivated to transform their organizations and convince others of the need to employ such strategies. Demanding more exacting evaluation of projects consultants, or partnerships with health management researchers in academic settings, can support such efforts.</p
