Research and development of HgZnTe as an infrared material
Interfacial morphology and Fermi level pinning behavior at the interfaces of Al, Ag, and Pt with UHV-cleaved CdTe and ZnTe have been studied using X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopies. Results are compared to metal/HgCdTe interface formation, where the weak HgTe bond and consequent ease of Hg loss strongly influence semiconductor disruption and metal-semiconductor intermising. For Al/CdTe, the strong Al-Te reaction yields a significantly more extensive Al-Te reacted region than has been observed for HgCdTe. The Al/ZnTe interface is observed to be more abrupt than Al/CdTe. The final Fermi level pinning positions, Ef-Evbm for Al, Ag, and Pt on p-type CdTe and p-ZnTe have been determined. Efi is found to be roughly the same for both CdTe and ZnTe, with the value for ZnTe lying approximately 0.2 eV closer to the VBM for all three metals. From these results, one would expect Schottky barriers of about the same height for these metals on p-CdTe and p-ZnTe; and also that, in principle, metal interfaces with the two alloys HgCdTe and HgZnTe would have the same properties. Comparisons and implications for electrical behavior of metal contacts to the alloys are discussed
Construction of a Cantilever-Andreev-Tunneling rig and its applications to superconductors
A technique for point-contact spectroscopy, based on an electro-mechanical
mechanism for the contact formation, has been developed. It is designed to be
used in both He and He cryostats. The performance has been demonstrated
by conductance measurements on various kinds of superconductors, including the
conventional superconductor Nb, the two-band superconductor MgB, and the
heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn. Characteristic conductance spectra
obtained prove this technique is useful for the investigation of the
superconducting order parameter. Advantages of this technique such as its
simplicity and versatility are described.Comment: 7 Pages, 7 figures, typeset in LaTeX, submitted to Rev. Sci. Instru
Photoemission studies of high temperature superconductors
Photoemission studies have been performed on all classes of high temperature superconductors except the Tl‐related compounds. Particular attention was paid to the surface cleanliness. Comparison with band calculation shows that the one‐electron picture cannot adequately explain the electronic structure of this type of materials. Most important, Cu satellites were observed both in the valence band and the Cu 2p core level for all the samples studied, signaling the importance of the d‐d correlation effects. the Cu 3d character of these satellites in the valence band was verified using resonance photoemission. The results have been interpreted in terms of a cluster model derived from the two band Anderson Hamiltonian, which in the past has been used successfully to describe the electronic structure of highly correlated systems. No clear satellite structure was observed in the O 1s core spectrum, which is consistent with the band‐like nature of the oxygen states. Examples of changes in the electronic structure, which could be related to Tc, (such as substituting Y by Pr in the Y‐Ba‐Cu‐O system and altering the number of Cu‐O layers in the Bi‐Ca‐Sr‐Cu‐O system), are also discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87348/2/330_1.pd
Health literacy, health status, and healthcare utilization of Taiwanese adults: results from a national survey
Abstract Background Low health literacy is considered a worldwide health threat. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence and socio-demographic covariates of low health literacy in Taiwanese adults and to investigate the relationships between health literacy and health status and health care utilization. Methods A national survey of 1493 adults was conducted in 2008. Health literacy was measured using the Mandarin Health Literacy Scale. Health status was measured based on self-rated physical and mental health. Health care utilization was measured based on self-reported outpatient clinic visits, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations. Results Approximately thirty percent of adults were found to have low (inadequate or marginal) health literacy. They tended to be older, have fewer years of schooling, lower household income, and reside in less populated areas. Inadequate health literacy was associated with poorer mental health (OR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.35-0.91). No association was found between health literacy and health care utilization even after adjusting for other covariates. Conclusions Low (inadequate and marginal) health literacy is prevalent in Taiwan. High prevalence of low health literacy is not necessarily indicative of the need for interventions. Systematic efforts to evaluate the impact of low health literacy on health outcomes in other countries would help to illuminate features of health care delivery and financing systems that may mitigate the adverse health effects of low health literacy.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78252/1/1471-2458-10-614.xmlhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78252/2/1471-2458-10-614.pdfPeer Reviewe

OBJECTIVES: Interferon (IFN) alpha is a key immunoregulatory cytokine secreted by activated plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDC) that constitute less than 1% of leucocytes. IFNalpha plays an important role in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Nevertheless, the natural IFNalpha inducers in SLE as well as the different IFNalpha secreting cell types are only partially characterised. METHODS: Chromatin was purified from calf thymus. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), neutrophils and mouse bone marrow neutrophils were purified and cultured with different stimuli. IFNalpha production was estimated by flow cytometry, ELISA and a bioassay, and gene expression by quantitative real time PCR. Neutrophil activation and NETosis were analysed by flow cytometry, ELISA and confocal microscopy. RESULTS: Neutrophils produced a bioactive IFNalpha on stimulation with purified chromatin. IFNalpha secretion was observed with steady state neutrophils purified from 56 independent healthy individuals and autoimmune patients in response to free chromatin and not chromatin containing immune complexes. Chromatin induced IFNalpha secretion occurred independently of Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9). Neutrophil priming by granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor or IFNalpha was not necessary but PBMC sustained IFNalpha secretion by neutrophils. PDC were 27 times more efficient than neutrophils but blood neutrophils were 100 times more frequent than PDC. Finally, neutrophil activation by chromatin was associated with NETosis and DNA sensor upregulation. CONCLUSIONS: Neutrophils have the capability of producing IFNalpha on selective triggering, and we identified a natural lupus stimulus involved, unveiling a new mechanism involved in SLE. Neutrophils represent another important source of IFNalpha and important targets for future therapies aimed at influencing IFNalpha levels
Pd2Si surfaces thermally enriched in silicon: Evidence of new Si:Pd bonds
Thermally induced Si accumulation onto Pd2Si surfaces has been studied for the first time with synchrotron radiation photoemission. Evidence is given of the formation of strong bonds between Si and Pd in the transition region between Pd2Si and Si. The results are discussed in view of the Pd-Si interfaces prepared by annealing in device technology

Workshop report on new directions in soft x-ray photoabsorption
The Workshop Report integrates what was said at the Workshop on New Directions in Soft X-Ray Photoabsorption, which focused on the region from 100 eV to 10 keV. The report clarifies the current state of theory and experiment and identifies the opportunities which new theoretical methods and experimental facilities could be expected to provide. The understanding of photoabsorption (which requires experimental photoabsorption cross section data) is a key to understanding the properties and behavior of atoms, molecules and solids. The Workshop participants were forty-three physicists and quantum chemists, from twenty-four institutions in four countries, all interested in photoabsorption from different perspectives
Pair Creation and an X-ray Free Electron Laser
Using a quantum kinetic equation coupled to Maxwell's equation we study the
possibility that focused beams at proposed X-ray free electron laser facilities
can generate electric field strengths large enough to cause spontaneous
electron-positron pair production from the QED vacuum. Our approach yields the
time and momentum dependence of the single particle distribution function.
Under conditions reckoned achievable at planned facilities, repeated cycles of
particle creation and annihilation take place in tune with the laser frequency.
However, the peak particle number density is insensitive to this frequency and
one can anticipate the production of a few hundred particle pairs per laser
period. Field-current feedback and quantum statistical effects are small and
can be neglected in this application of non-equilibrium quantum mean field
theory.Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX2
Exocytotic catecholamine release is not associated with cation flux through channels in the vesicle membrane but Na+ influx through the fusion pore
Release of charged neurotransmitter molecules through a narrow fusion pore requires charge compensation by other ions. It has been proposed that this may occur by ion flow from the cytosol through channels in the vesicle membrane, which would generate a net outward current. This hypothesis was tested in chromaffin cells using cell-attached patch amperometry that simultaneously measured catecholamine release from single vesicles and ionic current across the patch membrane. No detectable current was associated with catecholamine release indicating that <2% of cations, if any, enter the vesicle through its membrane. Instead,we show that flux of catecholamines through the fusion pore, measured as an amperometric foot signal, decreases when the extracellular cation concentration is reduced. The results reveal that the rate of transmitter release through the fusion pore is
coupled to net Na+ influx through the fusion pore, as predicted by electrodiffusion theory applied to fusion-pore permeation, and suggest a prefusion rather than postfusion role for vesicular cation channels
