    Screening for Parkinson’s Disease with Response Time Barriers: A Pilot Study

    Background: Although significant response time deficits (both reaction time and movement time) have been identified in numerous studies of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), few attempts have been made to evaluate the use of these measures in screening for PD. Methods: Receiver operator characteristic curves were used to identify cutoff scores for a unitweighted composite of two choice response tasks in a sample of 40 patients and 40 healthy participants. These scores were then cross-validated in an independent sample of 20 patients and 20 healthy participants. Results: The unit-weighted movement time composite demonstrated high sensitivity (90%) and specificity (90%) in the identification of PD. Movement time was also significantly correlated (r = 0.59, p \u3c 0.025) with the motor score of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Conclusions: Measures of chronometric speed, assessed without the use of biomechanically complex movements, have a potential role in screening for PD. Furthermore, the significant correlation between movement time and UPDRS motor score suggests that movement time may be useful in the quantification of PD severity

    An efficient score statistic for testing the equality of the means of several groups of count data in the presence of a common dispersion parameter is introduced and a new approximation to its distribution is given. The performance of the efficient score statistic using this approximation, the original efficient score statistic approximated by X 2 (t -1), the likelihood ratio statistic and four more ANOVA methods based on raw data or transformed data are compared in terms of size and power by using Monte Carlo simulations. The efficient score statistic with its new approximation is recommended. An application is given

    Effects of patch-size on populations of intertidal limpets, Siphonaria spp., in a linear landscape

    Organisms with different life-histories and abilities to disperse often utilise habitat patches in different ways. We investigated the influence of the size of patches of rock (separated by stretches of sand) on the density of pulmonate limpets (Siphonaria spp.) along 1500 km of the linear landscape of the South African coastline. We compared the influence of patch-size on two congeneric species with different modes of development, S. serrata a direct developer, and S. concinna a planktonic developer. We tested the spatial and temporal consistency of the effects of patch-size by sampling 7 independent regions spanning the distributional range of both species of limpets, and by sampling one region at monthly intervals for 1 year. Within each region or month, 4 small patches (60 m in length) were sampled. Across the entire geographic range and throughout the year, there were more of both species of limpets in large patches than in small patches. In most regions, there was greater variability in large patches than small patches. Variability within patches in a single region was similar throughout the year, with greater variability of both species in large than in small patches. We found little influence of the mode of development on the response of limpets to patch-size. Our findings highlight the importance of understanding patterns of distribution of species with respect to habitat heterogeneity in linear landscapes, and contradict the idea that organism mobility at an early ontogenetic stage directly affects habitat use

    Service Quality Determinants and Effectiveness in the Real Estate Brokerage Industry

    This study provides an analysis of the real estate brokerage industry for the purposes of identifying the determinants of service quality, the level of service quality, and possible service quality improvement measures. Factor analysis of survey response data is used to develop an empirical application of a theoretical service quality model. Except for rank order, real estate service quality determinants are found to match those in other industries. Real estate service quality met expectations in three areas, and was below expectations in two areas. Salesperson performance evaluation measures are suggested to improve service quality.

    Misinterpretation with norm-based scoring of health status in adults with type 1 diabetes

    BACKGROUND: Interpretations of profile and preference based measure scores can differ. Profile measures often use a norm-based scoring algorithm where each scale is scored to have a standardized mean and standard deviation, relative to the general population scores/norms (i.e., norm-based). Preference-based index measures generate an overall scores on the conventional scale in which 0.00 is assigned to dead and 1.00 is assigned to perfect health. Our objective was to investigate the interpretation of norm-based scoring of generic health status measures in a population of adults with type 1 diabetes by comparing norm-based health status scores and preference-based health-related quality of life (HRQL) scores. METHODS: Data were collected through self-complete questionnaires sent to patients with type 1 diabetes. The RAND-36 and the Health Utilities Index Mark 3 (HUI3) were included. RESULTS: A total of 216 (61%) questionnaires were returned. The respondent sample was predominantly female (58.8%); had a mean (SD) age of 37.1 (14.3) years and a mean duration of diabetes of 20.9 (12.4) years. Mean (SD) health status scores were: RAND-36 PHC 47.9 (9.4), RAND-36 MHC 47.2 (11.8), and HUI3 0.78 (0.23). Histograms of these scores show substantial left skew. HUI3 scores were similar to those previously reported for diabetes in the general Canadian population. Physical and mental health summary scores of the RAND-36 suggest that this population is as healthy as the general adult population. CONCLUSION: In this sample, a preference-based measure indicated poorer health, consistent with clinical evidence, whereas a norm-based measure indicated health similar to the average for the general population. Norm-based scoring measure may provide misleading interpretations in populations when health status is not normally distributed

    First Spitzer Space Telescope Observations of Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables: Evidence for Excess Emission at 3--8 microns

    We present the first observations of magnetic cataclysmic variables with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We used the Infrared Array Camera to obtain photometry of the polars EF Eri, GG Leo, V347 Pav, and RX J0154.0-5947 at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 μ\mum. In all of our targets, we detect excess mid-infrared emission over that expected from the component stars alone. We explore the origin of this IR excess by examining bremsstrahlung, cyclotron emission, circumbinary dust, and L/T brown dwarf secondary stars. Bremsstrahlung and cyclotron emission appear unlikely to be significant contributors to the observed fluxes. At present, the most likely candidate for the excess emission is dust that is probably located in a circumbinary disk with an inner temperature near 800 K. However, a simple dust disk plus any reasonable low mass or brown dwarf-like secondary star is unable to fully explain the observed flux densities in the 3--8 μ\mum region.Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letter

    Cell cycle- and DNA repair pathway-specific effects of apoptosis on tumor suppression

    The DNA damage response comprises DNA repair, cell-cycle checkpoint control, and DNA damage-induced apoptosis that collectively promote genomic integrity and suppress tumorigenesis. Previously, we have shown that the Chk2 kinase functions independently of the Mre11 complex (Mre11, Rad50, and Nbs1) and ATM in apoptosis and suppresses tumorigenesis resulting from hypomorphic alleles of Mre11 or Nbs1. Based on this work, we have proposed that Chk2 limits the oncogenic potential of replication-associated DNA damage. Here we further address the role of Chk2 and damage-induced apoptosis in suppressing the oncogenic potential of chromosome breaks. We show that loss of Chk2 or a mutation in p53 (R172P), which selectively impairs its function in apoptosis, rescued the lethality of mice lacking Lig4, a ligase required for nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) repair of DNA double-strand breaks in G0/G1. In contrast to Lig4(−/−)p53(−/−) mice, Lig4(−/−)Chk2(−/−) and Lig4(−/−)p53(R172P/R172P) mice were not prone to organ-specific, rapid tumorigenesis. Although the severe NHEJ deficiency of Lig4(−/−) was a less potent initiator of tumorigenesis in the p53(R172P/R172P) and Chk2(−/−) backgrounds, where p53 cell-cycle functions are largely intact, even mild defects in the intra-S and G2/M checkpoints caused by mutations in Nbs1 are sufficient to influence malignancy in p53(R172P/R172P) mice. We conclude that the oncogenic potential of double-strand breaks resulting from NHEJ deficiency is highly restricted by nonapoptotic functions of p53, such as the G1/S checkpoint or senescence, suggesting that the particular facets of the DNA damage response required for tumor suppression are dictated by the proliferative status of the tumor-initiating cell

    Building a Model of Collaboration Between Historically Black and Historically White Universities

    Despite increases over the last two decades in the number of degrees awarded to students from underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, enhancing diversity in these disciplines remains a challenge. This article describes a strategic approach to this challenge—the development of a collaborative partnership between two universities: the historically Black Elizabeth City State University and the historically White University of New Hampshire. The partnership, a type of learning organization built on three mutually agreed upon principles, strives to enhance opportunities for underrepresented students to pursue careers in the STEM disciplines. This article further describes six promising practices that framed the partnership, which resulted in the submission of nine proposals to federal agencies and the funding of four grants that led to the implementation, research, learning, and evaluation that followed
