Non-LTE aluminium abundances in late-type stars
Aluminium plays a key role in studies of the chemical enrichment of the
Galaxy and of globular clusters. However, strong deviations from LTE (non-LTE)
are known to significantly affect the inferred abundances in giant and
metal-poor stars. We present NLTE modeling of aluminium using recent and
accurate atomic data, in particular utilizing new transition rates for
collisions with hydrogen atoms, without the need for any astrophysically
calibrated parameters. For the first time, we perform 3D NLTE modeling of
aluminium lines in the solar spectrum. We also compute and make available
extensive grids of abundance corrections for lines in the optical and
near-infrared using one-dimensional model atmospheres, and apply grids of
precomputed departure coefficients to direct line synthesis for a set of
benchmark stars with accurately known stellar parameters. Our 3D NLTE modeling
of the solar spectrum reproduces observed center-to-limb variations in the
solar spectrum of the 7835 {\AA} line as well as the mid-infrared photospheric
emission line at 12.33 micron. We infer a 3D NLTE solar photospheric abundance
of A(Al) = 6.43+-0.03, in exact agreement with the meteoritic abundance. We
find that abundance corrections vary rapidly with stellar parameters; for the
3961 {\AA} resonance line, corrections are positive and may be as large as +1
dex, while corrections for subordinate lines generally have positive sign for
warm stars but negative for cool stars. Our modeling reproduces the observed
line profiles of benchmark K-giants, and we find abundance corrections as large
as -0.3 dex for Arcturus. Our analyses of four metal-poor benchmark stars yield
consistent abundances between the 3961 {\AA} resonance line and lines in the
UV, optical and near-infrared regions. Finally, we discuss implications for the
galactic chemical evolution of aluminium.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures. Accepted for publication in A&
The light elements in the light of 3D and non-LTE effects
In this review we discuss possible systematic errors inherent in classical 1D
LTE abundance analyses of late-type stars for the light elements (here: H, He,
Li, Be and B). The advent of realistic 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres and
the availability of non-LTE line formation codes place the stellar analyses on
a much firmer footing and indeed drastically modify the astrophysical
interpretations in many cases, especially at low metallicities. For the
Teff-sensitive hydrogen lines both stellar granulation and non-LTE are likely
important but the combination of the two has not yet been fully explored. A
fortuitous near-cancellation of significant but opposite 3D and non-LTE effects
leaves the derived 7Li abundances largely unaffected but new atomic collisional
data should be taken into account. We also discuss the impact on 3D non-LTE
line formation on the estimated lithium isotopic abundances in halo stars in
light of recent claims that convective line asymmetries can mimic the presence
of 6Li. While Be only have relatively minor non-LTE abundance corrections, B is
sensitive even if the latest calculations imply smaller non-LTE effects than
previously thought.Comment: 10 pages, invited review for IAU Symposium 268 "Light elements in the

Exploring the production and depletion of lithium in the Milky Way stellar disk
[ABRIDGED] We determine Li abundances for a well-studied sample of 714 F and
G dwarf, turn-off, and subgiant stars in the solar neighbourhood. The analysis
is based on line synthesis of the Li line at 6707 {\AA} in high-resolution and
high signal-to-noise ratio echelle spectra, obtained with the MIKE, FEROS,
SOFIN, UVES, and FIES spectrographs. The presented Li abundances are corrected
for non-LTE effects. Out of the sample of 714 stars we are able to determine Li
abundances for 420 stars and upper limits on the Li abundance for another 121
stars. 18 of the stars with well-determined Li abundances are listed as
exoplanet host stars. Our main finding is that there are no signatures of Li
production in the thick disk, but the Li abundance for stars of the same
effective temperature is independent of metallicity for stars that can be
associated with the Galactic thick disk. Significant Li production is however
seen in the thin disk, with a steady increase towards super-solar
metallicities. At the highest metallicities, however, around [Fe/H]~ +0.3, we
tentatively confirm the recent discovery that the Li abundances level out. We
hence contradict the recent finding in other studies that found that Li is also
produced in the thick disk. This is likely due to the chemically defined
selection criteria those studies used to define their thick disk samples. Age
criteria that we use here, produce a thick disk stellar sample that is much
less contaminated by thin disk stars, and hence more reliable abundance trends.
[ABRIDGED] A conclusion that can be drawn is that no significant Li production,
relative to the primordial abundance, took place during the first few billion
years of the Milky Way, an era coinciding with the formation and evolution of
the thick disk. [ABRIDGED]Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Tidal debris from Omega Centauri discovered with unsupervised machine learning
The gravitational interactions between the Milky Way and in-falling
satellites offer a wealth of information about the formation and evolution of
our Galaxy. In this paper, we explore the high-dimensionality of the GALAH DR3
plus Gaia eDR3 data set to identify new tidally stripped candidate stars of the
nearby star cluster Omega Centauri (). We investigate
both the chemical and dynamical parameter space simultaneously, and identify
cluster candidates that are spatially separated from the main cluster body, in
regions where contamination by halo field stars is high. Most notably, we find
candidates for scattered in the halo extending to more
than away from the main body of the cluster. Using a grid of
simulated stellar streams generated with like orbital
properties, we then compare the on sky distribution of these candidates to the
models. The results suggest that if had a similar
initial mass as its present day mass, then we can place a lower limit on its
time of accretion at t Gyr ago. Alternatively, if the
initial stellar mass was significantly larger, as would be expected if
is the remnant core of a dwarf Galaxy, then we can
constrain the accretion time to t Gyr ago. Taken together,
these results are consistent with the scenario that is
the remnant core of a disrupted dwarf galaxy.Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
Horizontal branch morphology and multiple stellar populations in the anomalous globular cluster M 22
M 22 is an anomalous globular cluster that hosts two groups of stars with different metallicity and s-element abundance. The star-to-star light-element variations in both groups, with the presence of individual Na-O and C-N anticorrelations, demonstratesWe are grateful to Peter Stetson for providing photometry of M22. Health and safety at work: the implication of the Council Directive on enterprises in Europe
Are Nurses More Altruistic than Real Estate Brokers?
We report results from a dictator game experiment with nurse students and real estate broker students as dictators, and Amnesty International as the recipient. Although brokers contributed substantial amounts, nurses contributed significantly more, on average 76 percent of their endowment. In a second part, subjects chose between a certain repetition of the experiment and a 50-50 chance of costly exit. About one third of the brokers and half of the nurses chose the exit option. While generosity was indeed higher among nurses, even when taking exits into account, the difference cannot readily be attributed to different degrees of altruism.dictator game, exit option, generosity, occupational differences
Chemical analysis of globular star clusters: theory and observation
A few minutes after the Big Bang that created our Universe, nucleosynthesis reactions forged some lighter isotopes, including 7Li. Ever since then, such reactions have taken place in the hot stellar interiors, providing the stars with the energy to shine and forming all chemical elements necessary for life as we know it. In this thesis I describe how we have inferred the chemical composition of stars in a globular cluster, hosting one of the oldest stellar populations in our Galaxy, in order to address two fundamental astrophysical problems.
The first problem is related to lithium, and the prediction of its primordial abundance from present cosmological theories of how the Universe was born. The Li abundances that we measure in the envelopes of globular cluster stars are lower than this estimate and we investigate the possibility that Li has been drained from the stellar surfaces. This thesis presents observational evidence that low-mass stars experience a small increase in their surface Li abundances during the course of their late phases of evolution, supporting this hypothesis.
The second question is related to the formation and evolution of globular clusters. It appears that these dense stellar environments early underwent a unique form of self- enrichment, by retaining the gas outflow from slow stellar winds. The material was then incorporated into a second stellar generation with identical chemical signatures to the first, except for a handful of lighter elements, including sodium. I here discuss several aspects of this stellar pollution process.
Only with a correct physical description of the radiative and convective energy transport through the stellar atmosphere, and the equilibrium state of the atoms, ions and molecules that form the tenuous gas, can we make solid predictions of the emergent spectrum and derive accurate abundances. In particular, I discuss how the simplifying assumption of local thermal equilibrium give rise to systematic errors in the analysis of Li and Na spectral lines, commonly mis-estimating the elemental abundances in stars by 10–50%, and in certain cases considerably more. Moreover, we have for the first time investigated the combined influence from departures from local thermal equilibrium and hydro-static equilibrium in the determination of the solar Na abundance
