BACKGROUND: Staging diagnosis of liver fibrosis is a prerequisite for timely diagnosis and therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B. In recent years, ultrasound elastography has become an important method for clinical noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis stage, but its diagnostic value for early liver fibrosis still needs to be further improved. In this study, the texture analysis was carried out on the basis of two dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE), and the feasibility of 2D-SWE plus texture analysis in the diagnosis of early liver fibrosis was discussed. AIM: To assess the diagnostic value of 2D-SWE combined with textural analysis in liver fibrosis staging. METHODS: This study recruited 46 patients with chronic hepatitis B. Patients underwent 2D-SWE and texture analysis; Young\u27s modulus values and textural patterns were obtained, respectively. Textural pattern was analyzed with regard to contrast, correlation, angular second moment (ASM), and homogeneity. Pathological results of biopsy specimens were the gold standard; comparison and assessment of the diagnosis efficiency were conducted for 2D-SWE, texture analysis and their combination. RESULTS: 2D-SWE displayed diagnosis efficiency in early fibrosis, significant fibrosis, severe fibrosis, and early cirrhosis (AUC \u3e 0.7, P \u3c 0.05) with respective AUC values of 0.823 (0.678-0.921), 0.808 (0.662-0.911), 0.920 (0.798-0.980), and 0.855 (0.716-0.943). Contrast and homogeneity displayed independent diagnosis efficiency in liver fibrosis stage (AUC \u3e 0.7, P \u3c 0.05), whereas correlation and ASM showed limited values. AUC of contrast and homogeneity were respectively 0.906 (0.779-0.973), 0.835 (0.693-0.930), 0.807 (0.660-0.910) and 0.925 (0.805-0.983), 0.789 (0.639-0.897), 0.736 (0.582-0.858), 0.705 (0.549-0.883) and 0.798 (0.650-0.904) in four liver fibrosis stages, which exhibited equivalence to 2D-SWE in diagnostic efficiency (P \u3e 0.05). Combined diagnosis (PRE) displayed diagnostic efficiency (AUC \u3e 0.7, P \u3c 0.01) for all fibrosis stages with respective AUC of 0.952 (0.841-0.994), 0.896 (0.766-0.967), 0.978 (0.881-0.999), 0.947 (0.835-0.992). The combined diagnosis showed higher diagnosis efficiency over 2D-SWE in early liver fibrosis (P \u3c 0.05), whereas no significant differences were observed in other comparisons (P \u3e 0.05). CONCLUSION: Texture analysis was capable of diagnosing liver fibrosis stage, combined diagnosis had obvious advantages in early liver fibrosis, liver fibrosis stage might be related to the hepatic tissue hardness distribution

Numerical investigation of the structure of a silicon six-wafer micro-combustor under the effect of hydrogen/air ratio

Research reports indicate that sufficiently high equivalence ratio of the hydrogen/air mixture leads to the upstream burning in the recirculation jacket, possibly damaging the micro- combustor due to the high wall temperature. This work investigates the influences of the equivalence ratio of the mixture on the structure of a micro-combustor device. Numerical simulation approaches focused on the structural design of the micro-combustor with the flame burning in the recirculation jacket. Combustion characteristics of the combustor were first analysed based on 2D computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and then thermo-mechanical analysis on the combustor was carried out by means of 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method. The results showed that the most dangerous locations where the critical failure could possibly occur lay at the burning areas in the recirculation jacket due to the poor bonding, the high temperature and the residual stress. The results of this study can be used for the design and improvement of the micro-combustors

Photometric Variability in the CSTAR Field: Results From the 2008 Data Set

The Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) is the first telescope facility built at Dome A, Antarctica. During the 2008 observing season, the installation provided long-baseline and high-cadence photometric observations in the i-band for 18,145 targets within 20 deg2 CSTAR field around the South Celestial Pole for the purpose of monitoring the astronomical observing quality of Dome A and detecting various types of photometric variability. Using sensitive and robust detection methods, we discover 274 potential variables from this data set, 83 of which are new discoveries. We characterize most of them, providing the periods, amplitudes and classes of variability. The catalog of all these variables is presented along with the discussion of their statistical properties.Comment: 38 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

Changes in sugars in organs of Phalaenopsis florets during different flowering stages of intact plant inflorescences

Phalaenopsis flowers possess extraordinary longevity. However, the changes of sugars, including glucose, fructose and sucrose, in organs of floret during different flowering stages of inflorescences attached to a plant have not been reported. To accomplish this, the sugars level in different floret organs were studied at 4 different stages (1. half open, 2. bloom 1 month, 3. bloom 2 months, and 4. wilting). Glucose and fructose were the major soluble sugars in the sepal, petal, labellum, pedicel, and remainder (including the column, anther cap, pollinia, and stigma) of a floret, but their levels decreased from stages 1 to 4. However, the amount of sucrose increased significantly at stage 4 in the sepal, petal, pedicel, and remainder, with the exception that the labellum remained constant throughout all stages. These results demonstrate that glucose and fructose are the major solutes that contribute to floret opening and blooming, and sucrose is salvaged and exported before floret senescence for opening other florets on the same inflorescence. Meanwhile, labellum possesses different sugar metabolism from other organs of Phalaenopsis floret

RNAa Is Conserved in Mammalian Cells

Background: RNA activation (RNAa) is a newly discovered mechanism of gene activation triggered by small doublestranded RNAs termed ‘small activating RNAs ’ (saRNAs). Thus far, RNAa has only been demonstrated in human cells and is unclear whether it is conserved in other mammals. Methodology/Principal Findings: In the present study, we evaluated RNAa in cells derived from four mammalian species including nonhuman primates (African green monkey and chimpanzee), mouse, and rat. Previously, we identified saRNAs leading to the activation of E-cadherin, p21, and VEGF in human cells. As the targeted sequences are highly conserved in primates, transfection of each human saRNA into African green monkey (COS1) and chimpanzee (WES) cells also resulted in induction of the intended gene. Additional saRNAs targeting clinically relevant genes including p53, PAR4, WT1, RB1, p27, NKX3-1, VDR, IL2, and pS2 were also designed and transfected into COS1 and WES cells. Of the nine genes, p53, PAR4, WT1, and NKX3-1 were induced by their corresponding saRNAs. We further extended our analysis of RNAa into rodent cell types. We identified two saRNAs that induced the expression of mouse Cyclin B1 in NIH/3T3 and TRAMP C1 cells, which led to increased phosphorylation of histone H3, a downstream marker for chromosome condensation and entry into mitosis. We also identified two saRNAs that activated the expression of CXCR4 in primary rat adipose–derived stem cells. Conclusions/Significance: This study demonstrates that RNAa exists in mammalian species other than human. Our finding
