    Cervical Ganglioneuroma in Pediatric Age: A Case Report

    Ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign, non-invasive tumor emerging from the sympathetic system. Of these tumors, only 8% occur in the neck. In this report, we present a case of a 13-year-old girl with a 2-year history of enlarging neck mass. Her only complaint, aside from neck swelling, was dysphagia. Physical and radiological examinations revealed a large mass centered in the right carotid space. A transcervical approach was used to excise the tumor emerging from the sympathetic ganglia. The patient developed temporary Horner's syndrome postoperatively. In a few weeks, she was completely asymptomatic. Histological examination was compatible with ganglioneuroma. Surgical excision is the only definite treatment of cervical ganglioneuroma and is also the only way to confirm the diagnosis.     Development and Evaluation of Praziquantel Solid Dispersions in Sodium Starch Glycolate

    Purpose: To develop and characterize solid dispersions of praziquantel (PZQ) with sodium starch glycolate (SSG) for enhanced drug solubility.Methods: PZQ solid dispersion (SD) was prepared using co-precipitation method by solvent evaporation. The ratios of PZQ to SSG were 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 (w/w). PZQ solubility was evaluated in purified water, and PZQ dissolution test was carried out in 0.1N HCl. Structural characterization of the dispersions was accomplished by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spe ctroscopy (FTIR) while the external morphology of the SDs, SSG and PZQ were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mucoadhesion properties of the SD (1:3) and SSG, on mucin disks were examined using texture profile analysis.Results: The highest solubility was obtained with 1:3 solid dispersion, with PZQ solubility of 97.31 %, which is 3.65-fold greater than the solubility of pure PZQ and physical misture (PM, 1:3). XRD results indicate a reduction in PZQ crystallinity while infrared spectra showed that the functional groups of PZQ and SSG were preserved. SEM showed that the physical structure of PZQ was modified from crystalline to amorphous. The amount of PZQ in PM and SD (1:3) that dissolved in 60 min was 70 and 88 %, respectively, and these values increased to 76 and 96 %, respectively. The solid dispersion reduced the mucoadhesive property of the glycolate.Conclusion: Solid dispersion formulation using SSG is a good alternative approach for increasing the dissolution rate of PZQ.Keywords: Praziquantel, Drug bioavailability, Schistosomiasis, Solid dispersion, Co-precipitation, Sodium starch glycolat

    FRACTIONAL PRECIPITATION OF SODIUM POLYPHOSPHATE AND CHARACTERIZATION BY P-31 NMR: AN EXPERIMENT FOR PYSICAL CHEMISTRY CLASSES. This text describes an experiment on fractional precipitation of a polymer together with determination of average degree of polymerization by NMR. Commercial sodium polyphosphate was fractionated by precipitation from aqueous solution by adding increasing amounts of acetone. The polydisperse salt and nine fractions obtained from it were analyzed by P-31 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and the degree of polymerization of the salts and of the fractions were calculated. Long-chain sodium polyphosphate was also synthesized and analyzed. This experiment was tested in a PChem lab course but it can be used also to illustrate topics of inorganic polymers and analytical chemistry.3391991199

    Preseason Training Improves Perception of Fatigue and Recovery From a Futsal Training Session.

    Purpose: To compare the posttraining recovery timeline of elite Brazilian futsal athletes before (Pre-PS) and after 10 weeks of the preseason (Post-PS) period of high-intensity technical–tactical training. Methods: At the start (n = 13) and at the end of the preseason (n = 7), under-20 male futsal players undertook fitness testing for maximal aerobic power, the countermovement jump (CMJ), and the 10-m sprint with change of direction. Furthermore, at both Pre-PS and Post-PS, the players participated in a training session where performance and psychophysiological measures were recorded before, immediately, 3, 24, and 48 hours postsession. The measures included CMJ, 10-m sprint, creatine kinase, Total Quality Recovery Scale, and Brunel Mood Scale. Effect size (ES) analyses compared fitness and posttraining recovery values for each parameter at Pre-PS versus Post-PS. Results: Only trivial ES (−0.02 to 0.11) was evident in maximal aerobic power, CMJ, and 10-m sprint at Post-PS compared with Pre-PS. For the timeline of recovery, only trivial and small ESs were evident for the 10-m sprint (−0.12 to 0.49), though CMJ recovery was improved at 3 hours (0.87) and 48 hours (1.27) at Post-PS and creatine kinase was lower at 48 hours (−1.33) at Post-PS. Perception of recovery was improved in Post-PS at 3 hours (1.50) and 24 hours postsession (0.92). Furthermore, perception of effort was lower immediately after the session (−0.29), fatigue was lower at 3 hours (−0.63), and vigor responses were improved in all postseason assessments (0.59 to 1.13). Conclusion: Despite minimal changes in fitness, preseason training attenuated players' perception of effort and fatigue and improved their recovery profile following a high-intensity technical–tactical training session

    Flow of red blood cells suspensions through hyperbolic microcontractions

    The present study uses a hyperbolic microchannel with a low aspect ratio (AR) to investigate how the red blood cells (RBCs) deform under conditions of both extensional and shear induced flows. The deformability is presented by the degree of the deformation index (DI) of the flowing RBCs throughout the microchannel at its centerline. A suitable image analysis technique is used for semi-automatic measurements of average DIs, velocity and strain rate of the RBCs travelling in the regions of interest. The results reveal a strong deformation of RBCs under both extensional and shear stress dominated flow conditions

    Anti-inflammatory, procollagen, and wound repair properties of topical insulin gel.

    Diabetes mellitus is associated with impaired wound healing. The topical use of insulin is a promising therapy because it may favor all phases of the wound healing process. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic outcomes of insulin gel in wounds of hyperglycemic mice. After diabetes induction, a 1-cm2 full-thickness wound was created on each animal's dorsum. The lesions were treated daily for 14 days with insulin gel (insulin group) or vehicle gel without insulin (vehicle group). Tissue samples were extracted on days 4, 7, 10, and 14 after the creation of the lesion. The samples were analyzed with hematoxylin/eosin and Sirius red staining, immunohistochemistry, Bio-Plex immunoassays, and western blotting. Insulin gel favored re-epithelialization at day 10 and increased the organization and deposition of collagen. Additionally, it modulated the expression of cytokines (interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-10) and increased the expression of arginase I, VEGF receptor 1, and VEGF on day 10. Activation of the insulin signaling pathway occurred via IRβ, IRS1, and IKK on day 10 and activation of Akt and IRS1 on day 14. These results suggested that insulin gel improved wound healing in hyperglycemic mice by modulating the expression of inflammatory factors, growth factors, and proteins of the insulin signaling pathway

    Accretions of Various Types of Dark Energies onto Morris-Thorne Wormhole

    In this work, we have studied accretion of the dark energies onto Morris-Thorne wormhole. For quintessence like dark energy, the mass of the wormhole decreases and phantom like dark energy, the mass of wormhole increases. We have assumed two types of dark energy like variable modified Chaplygin gas (VMCG) and generalized cosmic Chaplygin gas (GCCG). We have found the expression of wormhole mass in both cases. We have found the mass of the wormhole at late universe and this is finite. For our choices the parameters and the function B(a)B(a), these models generate only quintessence dark energy (not phantom) and so wormhole mass decreases during evolution of the universe. Next we have assumed 5 kinds of parametrizations of well known dark energy models. These models generate both quintessence and phantom scenarios. So if these dark energies accrete onto the wormhole, then for quintessence stage, wormhole mass decreases upto a certain value (finite value) and then again increases to infinite value for phantom stage during whole evolution of the universe.
