Objective: This research aimed to make a profile of the researches in an oral pathology post graduate program regarding to annual distribution, research subjects and financial support. Methods: The publications from the Annals Books from the Annual Session of the Brazilian Society of Research in Odontology (SBPqO) were analyzed, since 1984 until 2009. The sample was composed by 116 works, with the greater part (88) done after the doctoral program creation. Results: Seventeen (14.6%) works were made prior to creation of doctorate program, and the major part (n=99 / 85.4%) was done after that. The prevalent research subjects were: oral cancer (31.8%) and odontogenic cysts and tumors (18.2%). CNPq and CAPES were the most remarkable financial support agencies, with 30.8% and 24.8% each one, respectively. Conclusions: The program evaluated here exemplifies the scientific production of post graduation programs in oral pathology, showing its role in execution and publication of scientific works, also following the changes in research that occurred in Brazil in the last decades

METHODS: The sample consisted of 51 BMT patients. A questionnaire was used to collect data on age, gender, disease, type and time of transplant, cell origin, and GVHD occurrence. The extraoral and intraoral clinical examinations were performed by specialized professionals. RESULTS: Systemic GVHD was observed in 32.5% of the allogeneic transplant patients, and all of the patients with GVHD had oral manifestations. There was a statistically significant association between systemic GVHD and oral manifestations (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Given the relatively high prevalence of oral changes associated with GVHD in patients undergoing BMT, this study confirms the need to consider dental aspects in the examination, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of possible complications after BMT

Intraoral molluscum contagiosum in a young immunocompetent patient

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a contagious disease caused by a virus of the poxvirus family. In children, the disease commonly manifests as a variable number of discrete umbilicated papules on the face and trunk. In healthy and immunosuppressed adults, the disease appears on or near the genital organs and is often sexually transmitted. MC involving the intraoral mucosa has been documented but is rare. We report a case of MC involving the oral mucosa exclusively and discuss the main clinical, histopathologic, and therapeutic characteristics, comparing the findings with cases of this rare oral presentation described in the literatur

Among them, more than 400 species are known, and also a huge diversity of microorganisms that have been discovered because of the innovations in molecular biology techniques. Talking about staphylococcus spp., its presence in oral environment of health individuals and local or systemic wounded ones is at least controversial, what guides to the necessity of accurate studies in order to clarify this bacteria profile in this microenvironment ecology, as well as in oral and systemic disease etiology. This study aimed to gather the current knowledge concerning the staphylococcal presence in oral environment and its implications in oral mucositis development, in this case called "oral staphylococcal mucositis", a clinical condition that affects more commonly ancient patients, systemic weakened or immunologically wounded
