Resolving the Submillimeter Background: the 850-micron Galaxy Counts
Recent deep blank field submillimeter surveys have revealed a population of
luminous high redshift galaxies that emit most of their energy in the
submillimeter. The results suggest that much of the star formation at high
redshift may be hidden to optical observations. In this paper we present
wide-area 850-micron SCUBA data on the Hawaii Survey Fields SSA13, SSA17, and
SSA22. Combining these new data with our previous deep field data, we establish
the 850-micron galaxy counts from 2 mJy to 10 mJy with a >3-sigma detection
limit. The area coverage is 104 square arcmin to 8 mJy and 7.7 square arcmin to
2.3 mJy. The differential 850-micron counts are well described by the function
n(S)=N_0/(a+S^3.2), where S is the flux in mJy, N_0=3.0 x 10^4 per square
degree per mJy, and a=0.4-1.0 is chosen to match the 850-micron extragalactic
background light. Between 20 to 30 per cent of the 850-micron background
resides in sources brighter than 2 mJy. Using an empirical fit to our >2 mJy
data constrained by the EBL at lower fluxes, we argue that the bulk of the
850-micron extragalactic background light resides in sources with fluxes near 1
mJy. The submillimeter sources are plausible progenitors of the present-day

Open Space – a collaborative process for facilitating Tourism IT partnerships
The success of IT projects depends on the success of the partnerships on which they are based. However past research by the author has identified a significant rate of failure in these partnerships, predominantly due to an overly technical mindset, leading to the question: “how do we ensure that, as technological solutions are implemented within tourism, due consideration is given to human-centred issues?” The tourism partnership literature is explored for additional insights revealing that issues connected with power, participation and normative positions play a major role. The method, Open Space, is investigated for its ability to engage stakeholders in free and open debate. This paper reports on a one-day Open Space event sponsored by two major intermediaries in the UK travel industry who wanted to consult their business partners. Both the running of the event and its results reveal how Open Space has the potential to address some of the weaknesses associated with tourism partnerships
The Submillimeter Properties of the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field North X-ray Sample
We present submillimeter observations for 136 of the 370 X-ray sources
detected in the 1 Ms exposure of the Chandra Deep Field North. Ten of the X-ray
sources are significantly detected in the submillimeter. The average X-ray
source in the sample has a significant 850 micron flux of 1.69+/-0.27 mJy. This
value shows little dependence on the 2-8 keV flux from 5e-16 erg/cm^2/s to
1e-14 erg/cm^2/s. The ensemble of X-ray sources contribute about 10% of the
extragalactic background light at 850 microns. The submillimeter excess is
found to be strongest in the optically faint X-ray sources that are also seen
at 20 cm, which is consistent with these X-ray sources being obscured and at

Evolution and diversity of TGF-beta pathways are linked with novel developmental and behavioural trait
Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) signalling is essential for numerous biological functions. It is a highly conserved pathway found in all metazoans including the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, which has also been pivotal in identifying many components. Utilising a comparative evolutionary approach, we explored TGF-β signalling in nine nematode species and revealed striking variability in TGF-β gene frequency across the lineage. Of the species analysed, gene duplications in the DAF-7 pathway appear common with the greatest disparity observed in Pristionchus pacificus. Specifically, multiple paralogues of daf-3, daf-4 and daf-7 were detected. To investigate this additional diversity, we induced mutations in 22 TGF-β components and generated corresponding double, triple and quadruple mutants revealing both conservation and diversification in function. Although, the DBL-1 pathway regulating body morphology appears highly conserved, the DAF-7 pathway exhibits functional divergence, notably in some aspects of dauer formation. Furthermore, the formation of the phenotypically plastic mouth in P. pacificus is partially influenced through TGF-β with the strongest effect in Ppa-tag-68. This appears important for numerous processes in P. pacificus but has no known function in C. elegans. Finally, we observe behavioural differences in TGF-β mutants including in chemosensation and the establishment of the P. pacificus kin-recognition signal. Thus, TGF-β signalling in nematodes represents a stochastic genetic network capable of generating novel functions through the duplication and deletion of associated genes
State-of-the-art in integrated vehicle health management
Integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) is a collection of data relevant to the present and future performance of a vehicle system and its transformation into information can be used to support operational decisions. This design and operation concept embraces an integration of sensors, communication technologies, and artificial intelligence to provide vehicle-wide abilities to diagnose problems and recommend solutions. This article aims to report the state-of-the-art of IVHM research by presenting a systematic review of the literature. The literature from different sources is collated and analysed, and the major emerging themes are presented. On this basis, the article describes the IVHM concept and its evolution, discusses configurations and existing applications along with main drivers, potential benefits and barriers to adoption, summarizes design guidelines and available methods, and identifies future research challenges
Factor Analysis of the CES-D 12 among a Community Sample of Black Men
The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale is one of the most widely used measures for assessing depression in population-based research. Little is known about the varying range of symptomatology expressed by Black men, who report higher chronicity and disability of their depressive symptoms compared to men of other racial and ethnic backgrounds. This study assessed the dimensional structure of the CES-D 12-item scale using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis in a community-based sample of Black men (n = 683). Two latent factors emerged from the scale that best fit the data: interpersonal negative affect (INA) and diminished positive affect (DPA). The item “I felt like everything I did was an effort” was removed from the final measure, resulting in an 11-item scale. The total score for the revised CES-D-11 displayed acceptable internal consistency on both latent factors (Cronbach’s α = 0.83 [INA] and 0.73 [DPA]) and model fit (χ 2 = 165.58, TLI = 0.967, CFI = 0.974, RMSEA = 0.065). Results differ from CES-D factor analyses in other demographic groups, including studies with other male subpopulations, such that depressed mood and interpersonal problems factors are merged as a unidimensional construct. Findings suggest that the “effort” item from the CES-D 12 should be interpreted with caution among Black men. Future studies should continue to disentangle the divergent pathways in which Black men express depressed mood
Spitzer IRAC Observations of Star Formation in N159 in the LMC
We present observations of the giant HII region complex N159 in the LMC using
IRAC on the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}. One of the two objects previously
identified as protostars in N159 has an SED consistent with classification as a
Class I young stellar object (YSO) and the other is probably a Class I YSO as
well, making these two stars the youngest stars known outside the Milky Way. We
identify two other sources that may also be Class I YSOs. One component,
N159AN, is completely hidden at optical wavelengths, but is very prominent in
the infrared. The integrated luminosity of the entire complex is L L, consistent with the observed radio emission assuming a
normal Galactic initial mass function (IMF). There is no evidence for a red
supergiant population indicative of an older burst of star formation. The N159
complex is 50 pc in diameter, larger in physical size than typical HII regions
in the Milky Way with comparable luminosity. We argue that all of the
individual components are related in their star formation history. The
morphology of the region is consistent with a wind blown bubble $\approx
1-2Myr-old that has initiated star formation now taking place at the rim. Other
than its large physical size, star formation in N159 appears to be
indistinguishable from star formation in the Milky Way.Comment: 14 figure
HARP/ACSIS: A submillimetre spectral imaging system on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope
This paper describes a new Heterodyne Array Receiver Programme (HARP) and
Auto-Correlation Spectral Imaging System (ACSIS) that have recently been
installed and commissioned on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The
16-element focal-plane array receiver, operating in the submillimetre from 325
to 375 GHz, offers high (three-dimensional) mapping speeds, along with
significant improvements over single-detector counterparts in calibration and
image quality. Receiver temperatures are 120 K across the whole band and
system temperatures of 300K are reached routinely under good weather
conditions. The system includes a single-sideband filter so these are SSB
figures. Used in conjunction with ACSIS, the system can produce large-scale
maps rapidly, in one or more frequency settings, at high spatial and spectral
resolution. Fully-sampled maps of size 1 square degree can be observed in under
1 hour.
The scientific need for array receivers arises from the requirement for
programmes to study samples of objects of statistically significant size, in
large-scale unbiased surveys of galactic and extra-galactic regions. Along with
morphological information, the new spectral imaging system can be used to study
the physical and chemical properties of regions of interest. Its
three-dimensional imaging capabilities are critical for research into
turbulence and dynamics. In addition, HARP/ACSIS will provide highly
complementary science programmes to wide-field continuum studies, and produce
the essential preparatory work for submillimetre interferometers such as the
