Learning masculinities in a Japanese high school rugby club
This paper draws on research conducted on a Tokyo high school rugby club to explore diversity in the masculinities formed through membership in the club. Based on the premise that particular forms of masculinity are expressed and learnt through ways of playing (game style) and the attendant regimes of training, it examines the expression and learning of masculinities at three analytic levels. It identifies a hegemonic, culture-specific form of masculinity operating in Japanese high school rugby, a class-influenced variation of it at the institutional level of the school and, by further tightening its analytic focus, further variation at an individual level. In doing so this paper highlights the ways in which diversity in the masculinities constructed through contact sports can be obfuscated by a reductionist view of there being only one, universal hegemonic patterns of masculinity
Atmospheric neutrons
Contributions to fast neutron measurements in the atmosphere are outlined. The results of a calculation to determine the production, distribution and final disappearance of atmospheric neutrons over the entire spectrum are presented. An attempt is made to answer questions that relate to processes such as neutron escape from the atmosphere and C-14 production. In addition, since variations of secondary neutrons can be related to variations in the primary radiation, comment on the modulation of both radiation components is made
Suppression of Quantum Scattering in Strongly Confined Systems
We demonstrate that scattering of particles strongly interacting in three
dimensions (3D) can be suppressed at low energies in a quasi-one-dimensional
(1D) confinement. The underlying mechanism is the interference of the s- and
p-wave scattering contributions with large s- and p-wave 3D scattering lengths
being a necessary prerequisite. This low-dimensional quantum scattering effect
might be useful in "interacting" quasi-1D ultracold atomic gases, guided atom
interferometry, and impurity scattering in strongly confined quantum wire-based

Coordination of Geological and Engineering Research in Support of Gulf Coast Co-Production Program
More than 150 gas fields were reviewed, and 25 fields were selected using modified specific selection criteria as outlined by Gregory and others (1983). Further evaluation of these fields is necessary to obtain a new ranking for Gregory's class A, B, and C divisions. A list of the 25 most favorable fields was sent to Eaton Operating Co., who were to approach likely companies to initiate joint ventures in co-production.
Four reservoirs containing dispersed gas were examined for their co-production potential. Reservoirs in Port Acres and Ellis fields produce from the Hackberry Member of the Oligocene Frio Formation, and two reservoirs in Esther field produce from the lower Miocene Planulina Zone. Log-pattern and lithofacies maps, together with stratigraphic position, suggest that the reservoirs are in ancient submarine-fan deposits. Dip-elongate, channel-fill sands are characteristic; reservoir sands pinch out along strike. Growth faults, common in the submarine slope setting, form updip and downdip boundaries, producing combination traps. In Ellis field, co-production accounts for 300 Mcf (8.5 x 106 m3) of gas per day. Port Acres field contains the largest remaining reserves, but other technical and economic factors limit co-production there. Recent drilling has extended primary production and delayed co-production in Esther field. The Gas Research Institute requested that further work on the selection and evaluation of potential co-production gas fields be terminated because funds were required for the Port Arthur project.Bureau of Economic Geolog
Land Development - Tree 4 Hope
The Land Development Team has partnered with Tree 4 Hope and Hope Academy in Santa Lucía Milpas Altas, Guatemala to improve the outdoor facilities of the school. Jenn and David Hope-Tringali are the client/partner representatives of the school for this project. The goal of the project is to provide design and construction drawings for three main elements of the proposed land development: (1) a parking lot for buses and school vehicles that enter the site, (2) a single sports court that can accommodate basketball and soccer, and (3) a playground that is directed towards themes associated with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). People with complex communication needs who use speech-generating devices have very little expressive control over their tone of voice. Despite its importance in human interaction, the issue of tone of voice remains all but absent from AAC research and development however. In this paper, we describe three interdisciplinary projects, past, present and future: The critical design collection Six Speaking Chairs has provoked deeper discussion and inspired a social model of tone of voice; the speculative concept Speech Hedge illustrates challenges and opportunities in designing more expressive user interfaces; the pilot project Tonetable could enable participatory research and seed a research network around tone of voice. We speculate that more radical interactions might expand frontiers of AAC and disrupt speech technology as a whole
Contrasting carbonate depositional systems for Pliocene cool-water limestones cropping out in central Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
Pliocene limestone formations in central Hawke's Bay (eastern North Island, New Zealand) accumulated on and near the margins of a narrow forearc basin seaway within the convergent Australia/Pacific plate boundary zone. The active tectonic setting and varied paleogeographic features of the limestone units investigated, in association with probable glacioeustatic sea-level fluctuations, resulted in complex stratigraphic architectures and contrasting types of carbonate accumulation on either side of the seaway. Here, we recognise recurring patterns of sedimentary facies, and sequences and systems tracts bounded by key physical surfaces within the limestone sheets. The facies types range from Bioclastic (B) to Siliciclastic (S) end-members via Mixed (M) carbonate-siliciclastic deposits. Skeletal components are typical cool-water associations dominated by epifaunal calcitic bivalves, bryozoans, and especially barnacles. Siliciclastic contents vary from one formation to another, and highlight siliciclastic-rich limestone units in the western ranges versus siliciclastic-poor limestone units in the eastern coastal hills. Heterogeneities in facies types, stratal patterns, and also in diagenetic pathways between eastern and western limestone units are considered to originate in the coeval occurrence in different parts of the forearc basin of two main morphodynamic carbonate systems over time
An International Analysis of the Maturity of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems Use
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems dominate the Information Technology (IT) landscape of global companies. Organisations are at different stages in the implementation process ranging from the initial strategic analysis of implementation options, through completed standard implementations and to the sophisticated exploitation of ERP systems using advanced knowledge management, decision support and supply chain management systems. There are also variances in the perspective of managers regarding the strategic potential of ERP systems. We present a maturity model for ERP systems that identifies three key implementation stages. The model is illustrated using case data from 24 organisations in the US and Europe. In stage one, organisations are managing legacy systems and starting the ERP project. In stage two, implementation is complete and the functionality of the ERP system is being exploited across the organisation. In stage three, organisations have normalised the ERP system into the organisation and are engaged in the process of obtaining strategic value from the system by using additional ‘satellite’ systems including knowledge management and supply chain planning. It is shown that the organisations follow an S shaped curve, and that most companies are in the middle stage
Linking Physical Education With Community Sport and Recreation: A Program for Adolescent Girls
The engagement of adolescent girls in physical activity (PA) is a persistent challenge. School-based PA programs have often met with little success because of the lack of linkages between school and community PA settings. The Triple G program aimed to improve PA levels of secondary school girls (12-15 years) in regional Victoria, Australia. The program included a school-based physical education (PE) component that uniquely incorporated student-centered teaching and behavioral skill development. The school component was conceptually and practically linked to a community component that emphasized appropriate structures for participation. The program was informed by ethnographic fieldwork to understand the contextual factors that affect girls’ participation in PA. A collaborative intervention design was undertaken to align with PE curriculum and coaching and instructional approaches in community PA settings. The theoretical framework for the intervention was the socioecological model that was underpinned by both individual-level (social cognitive theory) and organizational-level (building organizational/community capacity) strategies. The program model provides an innovative conceptual framework for linking school PE with community sport and recreation and may benefit other PA programs seeking to engage adolescent girls. The mediating effect of task presentation on collaboration and children's acquisition of scientific reasoning
There has been considerable research concerning peer interaction and the acquisition of children's scientific reasoning. This study investigated differences in collaborative activity between pairs of children working around a computer with pairs of children working with physical apparatus and related any differences to the development of children's scientific reasoning. Children aged between 9 and 10 years old (48 boys and 48 girls) were placed into either same ability or mixed ability pairs according to their individual, pre-test performance on a scientific reasoning task. These pairs then worked on either a computer version or a physical version of Inhelder and Piaget's (1958) chemical combination task. Type of presentation was found to mediate the nature and type of collaborative activity. The mixed-ability pairs working around the computer talked proportionally more about the task and management of the task; had proportionally more transactive discussions and used the record more productively than children working with the physical apparatus. Type of presentation was also found to mediated children's learning. Children in same ability pairs who worked with the physical apparatus improved significantly more than same ability pairs who worked around the computer. These findings were partially predicted from a socio-cultural theory and show the importance of tools for mediating collaborative activity and collaborative learning
