Vision-based Detection of Acoustic Timed Events: a Case Study on Clarinet Note Onsets
Acoustic events often have a visual counterpart. Knowledge of visual
information can aid the understanding of complex auditory scenes, even when
only a stereo mixdown is available in the audio domain, \eg identifying which
musicians are playing in large musical ensembles. In this paper, we consider a
vision-based approach to note onset detection. As a case study we focus on
challenging, real-world clarinetist videos and carry out preliminary
experiments on a 3D convolutional neural network based on multiple streams and
purposely avoiding temporal pooling. We release an audiovisual dataset with 4.5
hours of clarinetist videos together with cleaned annotations which include
about 36,000 onsets and the coordinates for a number of salient points and
regions of interest. By performing several training trials on our dataset, we
learned that the problem is challenging. We found that the CNN model is highly
sensitive to the optimization algorithm and hyper-parameters, and that treating
the problem as binary classification may prevent the joint optimization of
precision and recall. To encourage further research, we publicly share our
dataset, annotations and all models and detail which issues we came across
during our preliminary experiments.Comment: Proceedings of the First International Conference on Deep Learning

A Novel Mechanism for Delivering IPTV Traffic in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks
IPTV offers digital television services over Internet Protocol (IP) for the ubscribers at a lower cost. Despite all the attractive IPTV services, it also requires high-speed access networks with the functions of multicasting, Quality-of-Services (QoS) guarantee and so on. In the access networks, Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is regarded as one of the best technology to meet the higher bandwidth demands applications such as IPTV. There are two common mechanisms used for delivering IPTV to the users in the EPON system such as, dedicated stream and multicast stream. The dedicated stream is not scalable to a large number of clients because of the limited bandwidth and resource consumption at the server side. Conversely, although multicast could be used as a scalable solution for media streaming, but providing such services in the EPON is still challenging due to some limitations in the EPON system. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism that is a Single Copy Broadcast (SCB) with Priority Queue (PQ) mechanism that can accommodate large number of clients IPTV streams without adding extra bandwidth and resources at the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). Simulation results have shown that our proposed mechanism can improve the QoS metrics and system performance in terms of bandwidth consumption and power consumption. Keywords— IPTV, QoS, EPON, Unicast, Multicast, Single Copy Broadcas
Characterization of knot complements in the 4-sphere
AbstractKnot complements in S4 are characterized as follows: A connected open set W ⊂ S4 is homeomorphic to the complement of some locally flat 2-sphere in S4 if and only if H1(W) is infinite cyclic, W has one end, and the fundamental group of that end is infinite cyclic. Applications include a characterization of weakly flat 2-spheres in S4 and a complement theorem for 2-spheres in S4
Representing homology classes of simply connected 4-manifolds
AbstractThe main theorem asserts that every 2-dimensional homology class of a compact simply connected PL 4-manifold can be represented by a codimension-0 submanifold consisting of a contractible manifold with a single 2-handle attached. One consequence of the theorem is the fact that every map of S2 into a simply connected, compact PL 4-manifold is homotopic to an embedding if and only if the same is true for every homotopy equivalence. The theorem is also the main ingredient in the proof of the following result: If W is a compact, simply connected, PL submanifold of S4, then each element of H2(W;Z) can be represented by a locally flat topological embedding of S2
Managing paediatric eosinophilic gastroenteropathies: a community experience
Awareness and diagnoses of eosinophilic gastroenteropathies have increased over the past decade. We report 3 cases of eosinophilic gastroenteropathies in children who were diagnosed by endoscopy, allergy tested by skin prick and patch testing, and managed with the use of avoidance/elemental diets
Tinjauan Paradoks Nilai Sakral Dan Profan Pada Produk Kerohanian Dalam Analisa Semiotika Pemasaran
A product is an artifact that mirroring the culture it expressed and also the changing agent of the same culture. In the case of consumerism, a product perform as a sign that is being manipulated for marketing communication. In Profanisation and Sacralization phenomenon the ideological identity that was formed in religion is now being contended in consumerism through the exploitation of the value of the sacred and the profane in an object. This research will be conducted in using marketing semiotic and ethnography to analyze the problem through the eye of the market. Based on the analysis and the review conducted, this research concludes a relation that links between a product design, religion and consumerism in the context of the phenomenon. This relation can be summed up as a market opportunity in faith-based design
