Larval nematodes in stomach wall granulomas of smelt Osmerus eperlanus from the German North Sea coast
Occurrence of stomach wall granulomas in European smelt was studled at 6 locations along the German North Sea coast. Identification of larval nematodes inhabiting these granulomas is provided for the first time. Three species, isolated by pepsin-HC1 digestion, are involved: Hysterothylacium cf. cornutum, Cosmocephalus obvelatus and Paracuaria tridentata. 72% of all stomachs examined were affected. The ratio of number of granulomas to number of the 3 larval species free in the mesentery was 1:1.3. Differences in prevalences and intensities were significant among all locations.
Granuloma abundance was highest in samples from the Elbe estuary decreasing in the other locations relative to their distance from the Elbe. There was no relationship between the number of larvae encapsulated on the stomach wall and the number of larval P decipjens in the musculature (r = 0.3).
Host condition factor could not be related to number of granulomas. Smelt appaears to be an important transmitter of spiruroid nematode larvae to marine birds in this region
Female motorsport fan engagement on social media-based brand communities
This study explored the engagement of female motorsport fans within F1 team brand communities on Twitter (now ‘X’). Specifically, we sought to investigate why and how female fans were engaging with social media-based brand communities managed by F1 motorsports teams, and to gain better insights into the factors that encourage or deter female fan engagement within such communities. Our research methods combined online surveys and content analysis of Twitter posts. The investigation revealed that female fans seemed hesitant to engage actively within motorsports team brand accounts due to a fear of receiving negative reactions to their comments. The findings also identified differences between the participation activities of female and male fans, as well as interest in different content categories. This study recommends that motorsports team brand community managers or social media managers give greater consideration to the well-being of female fans interacting on their social media platforms and communities. They also need to be aware of gender-based differences in engagement as well as the specific issues faced by female publics
Lombardi Drawings of Graphs
We introduce the notion of Lombardi graph drawings, named after the American
abstract artist Mark Lombardi. In these drawings, edges are represented as
circular arcs rather than as line segments or polylines, and the vertices have
perfect angular resolution: the edges are equally spaced around each vertex. We
describe algorithms for finding Lombardi drawings of regular graphs, graphs of
bounded degeneracy, and certain families of planar graphs.Comment: Expanded version of paper appearing in the 18th International

Beyond Outerplanarity
We study straight-line drawings of graphs where the vertices are placed in
convex position in the plane, i.e., convex drawings. We consider two families
of graph classes with nice convex drawings: outer -planar graphs, where each
edge is crossed by at most other edges; and, outer -quasi-planar graphs
where no edges can mutually cross. We show that the outer -planar graphs
are -degenerate, and consequently that every
outer -planar graph can be -colored, and this
bound is tight. We further show that every outer -planar graph has a
balanced separator of size . This implies that every outer -planar
graph has treewidth . For fixed , these small balanced separators
allow us to obtain a simple quasi-polynomial time algorithm to test whether a
given graph is outer -planar, i.e., none of these recognition problems are
NP-complete unless ETH fails. For the outer -quasi-planar graphs we prove
that, unlike other beyond-planar graph classes, every edge-maximal -vertex
outer -quasi planar graph has the same number of edges, namely . We also construct planar 3-trees that are not outer
-quasi-planar. Finally, we restrict outer -planar and outer
-quasi-planar drawings to \emph{closed} drawings, where the vertex sequence
on the boundary is a cycle in the graph. For each , we express closed outer
-planarity and \emph{closed outer -quasi-planarity} in extended monadic
second-order logic. Thus, closed outer -planarity is linear-time testable by

Stomach contents of sperm whales Physeter macrocephalus stranded in the North Sea 1990-1996
Stomach contents of 17 sperm whales Physeter macrocephalus stranded in Scotland and Denmark during 1990-96 were analysed. All were sub-adult or adult males and stranded between November and March. They had presumably entered the North Sea during their southward migration from feeding grounds in Arctic waters. Other studies indicate that the majority of the whales were apparently healthy. The diet of these whales was found to consist almost entirely of cephalopods, principally squid of the genus Gonatus (hereafter 'Gonatus', but probably G. fabricii, an oceanic species characteristic of Arctic waters). The other prey species identified were also mostly oceanic cephalopods: the squids Histioteuthis bonnellii, Teuthowenia megalops and Todarodes sagittatus and the octopus Haliphron atlanticus. Although these results are consistent with other recent studies in the area based on single stranded whales, they differ from results of work on whales caught during commercial whaling operations in Icelandic waters (1960s to 1980s) in that little evidence of predation on fish was found in the present study. Remains of single individuals of the veined squid Loligo forbesi, the northern octopus Eledone cirrhosa and the saithe Pollachius virens provided the only possible evidence of feeding in the North Sea. We infer that sperm whales do not enter the North Sea to feed. The timing, and large and uniform sizes of the Gonatus species eaten (most had mantle lengths in the range 195 to 245 mm), as estimated from measurements of the lower beaks, and the seasonality of the strandings is consistent with the whales having fed on mature squid, possibly spawning concentrations--as has recently been reported for bottlenose whales. Assuming that the diet recorded in this study was representative of sperm whales during the feeding season, as much as 500000 t of Gonatus could be removed by sperm whales in Norwegian waters each year and up to 3 times that figure from the eastern North Atlantic as a whole. Evidence from other studies indicates that Gonatus is an important food resource for a wide range of marine predators in Arctic waters
Efficient Enumeration of Bipartite Subgraphs in Graphs
Subgraph enumeration problems ask to output all subgraphs of an input graph
that belongs to the specified graph class or satisfy the given constraint.
These problems have been widely studied in theoretical computer science. As
far, many efficient enumeration algorithms for the fundamental substructures
such as spanning trees, cycles, and paths, have been developed. This paper
addresses the enumeration problem of bipartite subgraphs. Even though bipartite
graphs are quite fundamental and have numerous applications in both theory and
application, its enumeration algorithms have not been intensively studied, to
the best of our knowledge. We propose the first non-trivial algorithms for
enumerating all bipartite subgraphs in a given graph. As the main results, we
develop two efficient algorithms: the one enumerates all bipartite induced
subgraphs of a graph with degeneracy in time per solution. The other
