Second Harmonic Generation for a Dilute Suspension of Coated Particles
We derive an expression for the effective second-harmonic coefficient of a
dilute suspension of coated spherical particles. It is assumed that the coating
material, but not the core or the host, has a nonlinear susceptibility for
second-harmonic generation (SHG). The resulting compact expression shows the
various factors affecting the effective SHG coefficient. The effective SHG per
unit volume of nonlinear coating material is found to be greatly enhanced at
certain frequencies, corresponding to the surface plasmon resonance of the
coated particles. Similar expression is also derived for a dilute suspension of
coated discs. For coating materials with third-harmonic (THG) coefficient,
results for the effective THG coefficients are given for the cases of coated

The infection of primary avian tracheal epithelial cells with infectious bronchitis virus
Here we introduce a culture system for the isolation, passaging and amplification of avian tracheal epithelial (ATE) cells. The ATE medium, which contains chicken embryo extract and fetal bovine serum, supports the growth of ciliated cells, goblet cells and basal cells from chicken tracheas on fibronectin- or matrigel-coated dishes. Non-epithelial cells make up less than 10% of the total population. We further show that ATE cells support the replication and spread of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Interestingly, immunocytostaining revealed that basal cells are resistant to IBV infection. We also demonstrate that glycosaminoglycan had no effect on infection of the cells by IBV. Taken together, these findings suggest that primary ATE cells provide a novel cell culture system for the amplification of IBV and the in vitro characterization of viral cytopathogenesis
Chiral restoration effects on the shear viscosity of a pion gas
We investigate the shear viscosity of a pion gas in relativistic kinetic
theory, using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to construct the pion mass and the
pi-pi interaction at finite temperature. Whereas at low temperatures the
scattering properties and, hence, the viscosity are in agreement with
lowest-order chiral perturbation theory, we find strong medium modifications in
the crossover region. Here the system is strongly coupled and the scattering
lengths diverge, similarly as for ultra-cold Fermi gases at a Feshbach
resonance. As a consequence, the ratio eta/s is found to be strongly reduced as
compared to calculations without medium-modified masses and scattering
amplitudes. However, the quantitative results are very sensitive to the details

Renormalization Group Flow of Quantum Gravity in the Einstein-Hilbert Truncation
The exact renormalization group equation for pure quantum gravity is used to
derive the non-perturbative \Fbeta-functions for the dimensionless Newton
constant and cosmological constant on the theory space spanned by the
Einstein-Hilbert truncation. The resulting coupled differential equations are
evaluated for a sharp cutoff function. The features of these flow equations are
compared to those found when using a smooth cutoff. The system of equations
with sharp cutoff is then solved numerically, deriving the complete
renormalization group flow of the Einstein-Hilbert truncation in . The
resulting renormalization group trajectories are classified and their physical
relevance is discussed. The non-trivial fixed point which, if present in the
exact theory, might render Quantum Einstein Gravity nonperturbatively

Identification and phylogenetic analysis of orf virus from goats in Taiwan
An outbreak of contagious ecthyma in goats in central Taiwan was investigated. The disease was diagnosed by physical and histopathologic examinations, and the etiology of the disease was identified as orf virus by electron microscopy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequence of major envelope protein (B2L) gene. The entire protein-coding region of B2L gene were cloned and sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis of B2L amino acid sequences showed that the orf virus identified in this outbreak was closer to the Indian ORFV-Mukteswar 59/05 isolate. This is the first report on the molecular characterization of orf virus in Taiwan
Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadrons containing at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb taken,
respectively, at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II
detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for
, , ,
and at the three energy
points. Based on these cross sections we set the upper limits on the observed
cross sections and the branching fractions for decay into these

Partial wave analysis of J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi
Using events collected in the BESII detector, the
radiative decay is
studied. The invariant mass distribution exhibits a near-threshold
enhancement that peaks around 2.24 GeV/.
