As alternatives to conventional PFAS, ether-PFAS have not been studied much. Their effects to microbial communities, in particular, have not been reported. In this study, we investigated change of microbial community in soil-plant systems dosed with undecafluoro-2-methyl-3-oxahexanoic acid (GenX), dodecafluoro-3H-4,8-dioxanonanoate (ADONA), or 9-chlorohexadecafluoro-3-oxanonane-1-sulfonate (F-53B). It is revealed that the community structure and the species diversity were significantly affected by each of the three ether-PFAS at the two tested concentrations. The only exception was GenX at the low concentration. With respect to nitrification, amoA genes in ammonia oxidizing bacteria were not significantly affected while amoA gene abundance in ammonia oxidizing archaea was significantly decreased. In terms of denitrification, ether-PFAS at different concentrations had different impacts to the three studied genes: nirS, nirK, and norZ. This study thus demonstrated that ether-PFAS could bring significant changes to the soil microbial community structure and functions

In this 8‐year longitudinal study, we traced the vocabulary growth of Chinese children, explored potential precursors of vocabulary knowledge, and investigated how vocabulary growth predicted future reading skills. Two hundred and sixty‐four (264) native Chinese children from Beijing were measured on a variety of reading and language tasks over 8 years. Between the ages of 4 to 10 years, they were administered tasks of vocabulary and related cognitive skills. At age 11, comprehensive reading skills, including character recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension were examined. Individual differences in vocabulary developmental profiles were estimated using the intercept‐slope cluster method. Vocabulary development was then examined in relation to later reading outcomes. Three subgroups of lexical growth were classified, namely high‐high (with a large initial vocabulary size and a fast growth rate), low‐high (with a small initial vocabulary size and a fast growth rate) and low‐low (with a small initial vocabulary size and a slow growth rate) groups. Low‐high and low‐low groups were distinguishable mostly through phonological skills, morphological skills and other reading‐related cognitive skills. Childhood vocabulary development (using intercept and slope) explained subsequent reading skills. Findings suggest that language‐related and reading‐related cognitive skills differ among groups with different developmental trajectories of vocabulary, and the initial size and growth rate of vocabulary may be two predictors for later reading development. “In this 8‐year longitudinal study, we traced the vocabulary growth of Chinese children, explored potential precursors of vocabulary knowledge, and investigated how vocabulary growth predicted future reading skills. Early prediction of reading disabilities in Chinese is important for early remediation efforts. In this 6-year longitudinal study, we investigated the early cognitive predictors of reading skill in a statistically representative sample of Chinese children from Beijing. Two hundred sixty-one (261) native Chinese children were administered seven language-related skills over three years between the ages of 3 and 6 years. Performances on these skills were then examined in relation to subsequent word reading accuracy and fluency. Individual differences in developmental profiles across tasks were then estimated using growth mixture modeling.Four developmental trajectories were classified – the typical (control), catch-up (with low initial cognitive performances but adequate subsequent reading), literacy-related-cognitive-delay (with difficulties in morphological awareness, phonological awareness, and speeded naming and subsequent word recognition), and language-delay (relatively low across all tasks) groups.Findings suggest that the combination of phonological awareness, rapid naming and morphological awareness are essential in the early prediction of later reading difficulties in Chinese children.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/79090/1/j.1469-7610.2010.02311.x.pd

The Influence of Different Caregivers on Infant Growth and Development in China

ObjectiveAn increasing number of parents in China ask grandparents or babysitters to care for their children. Modern parents are often the only child in their family because of China’s One-Child Policy and thus may lack interaction with siblings. Accordingly, the present study aimed to explore whether different caregivers affect the physical and development of infants in China.MethodsIn total, 2,514 infants were enrolled in our study. We assessed their weight-for-age, supine length-for-age, weight-for-length, occipital-frontal circumference, and Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST) results and recorded their general parental information and their primary caregivers.ResultsThe weights and lengths of 12-month-old infants under the care of babysitters were significantly lower than those of infants under the care of parents or grandparents (P < 0.05). Additionally, 12-month-old infants under the care of babysitters had the lowest DDST pass rate (75%) among the three groups (χ2 = 11.819, P = 0.012), especially for the fine motor-adaptive and language domains. Compared to 12-month-old infants under the care of parents and babysitters, infants under the care of grandparents were more likely to be overweight or obese (P < 0.001).ConclusionThe study showed that caregivers had a dominant role in the physical and cognitive development of the infants. Specifically, compared with infants raised by grandparents and parents, 12-month-old infants under the care of babysitters had partially suppressed lengths and weights and lagged cognitively. The 12-month-old infants under the care of grandparents were more overweight than those cared for by parents and babysitters

Copper-Catalyzed Three-Component Synthesis of Benzothiazolethiones from <i>o</i>‑Iodoanilines, Isocyanide, and Potassium Sulfide

An efficient copper catalyzed strategy for the synthesis of a variety of benzothiazolethione derivatives has been developed. In the presence of CuCl, the three-component reaction of <i>o</i>-iodoanilines and K2S with <i>p</i>-toluenesulfonylmethyl isocyanide proceeded smoothly to obtain the corresponding benzothiazolethiones in good to excellent isolated yields. Notably, isocyanide functioned as a carbon source and K2S functioned as a sulfur source in this reaction

The essential oil of Mosla chinensis Maxim cv. Jiangxiangru is known for its antibacterial ability. This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition of Jiangxiangru essential oil and its inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC–MS) was used to determine the chemical composition of Jiangxiangru essential oil. Subsequently, the eight major chemical components were quantitatively analyzed using GC– MS, and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against S. aureus were tested. Biofilm formation was detected by crystal violet semi-quantitative method and silver staining. Of the 59 peaks detected, 29 were identified by GC–MS. Of these peaks, thymol, carvacrol, p-cymene, Îł-terpinene, thymol acetate, α-caryophyllene, 3-carene, and carvacryl acetate were present at a relatively higher concentration. The results of the quantitative test showed that thymol, carvacrol, p-cymene, and Îł-terpinene were the major components of the essential oil. Among the eight reference substances, only thymol, carvacrol, and thymol acetate had lower MICs compared with the essential oil. Essential oil, carvacrol, carvacryl acetate, α-caryophyllene, and 3-carene showed the better inhibition of S. aureus biofilm formation. When one fourth of the MIC concentrations were used for these substances (0.0625 mg/mL for essential oil, 0.0305 mg/mL for carvacrol, 1.458 mg/mL for carvacryl acetate, 0.1268 mg/mL for α-caryophyllene, and 2.5975 mg/mL for 3-carene), the inhibition rates were over 80%. However, thymol, Îł-terpinene, thymol acetate, and p-cymene showed a relatively poor inhibition of S. aureus biofilm formation. When 1× MIC concentrations of these substances were used, the inhibition rates were less than 50%. In conclusion, Jiangxiangru essential oil and its major components, carvacrol, carvacryl acetate, α-caryophyllene, and 3-carene, strongly inhibited biofilm formation in S. aureus

Effective stabilization of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) precursors in wastewater treatment sludge by surfactant-modified clay

The application of biosolids or treated sewage sludge containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in agricultural lands and the disposal of sludge in landfills pose high risks to humans and the environment. Although PFAS precursors have not been regulated yet, their potential transformation to highly regulated perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) may enable them to serve as a long-term source and make remediation of PFAAs a continuing task. Therefore, treating precursors in sewage sludge is even more, certainly not less, critical than treating or removing PFAAs. In this study, a green surfactant-modified clay sorbent was evaluated for its efficacy in stabilizing two representative PFAA precursors in sludge, e.g., N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamido acetic acid (N-EtFOSAA) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA), in comparison with unmodified clay and powdered activated carbon (PAC). Results showed N-EtFOSAA and 6:2 FTSA exhibited distinct adsorption behaviors in the sludge without sorbents due to their different physicochemical properties, such as hydrophobicity and functional groups. Among the three sorbents, the modified clay reduced the water leachability of N-EtFOSAA and 6:2 FTSA by 91.5% and 95.4%, respectively, compared to controls without amendments at the end of the experiment (47 days). Within the same duration, PAC decreased the water leachability of N-EtFOSAA and 6:2 FTSA by 60.6% and 37.3%, respectively. At the same time, the unmodified clay demonstrated a poor stabilization effect and even promoted the leaching of precursors. These findings suggested that the modified clay had the potential for stabilization of precursors, while negatively charged and/or hydrophilic sorbents, such as the unmodified clay, should be avoided in the stabilization process. These results could provide valuable information for developing effective amendments for stabilizing PFAS in sludge or biosolids. Future research should evaluate the long-term effect of the stabilization approach using actual sludge from wastewater treatment facilities

    No full text
Background: To evaluate off-label and off-NCCN guidelines uses of antineoplastic drugs in a major Chinese hospital. Methods: Totally 1122 patients were selected from July to December 2011. Then, the off-label and off-NCCN guidelines uses of antineoplastic drugs were analyzed. Results: In 798 of 1122 patients (71.12%), drugs were used for off-label. In 317 of 1122 patients (28.25%), the drugs were prescribed for off-label and off-NCCN guidelines. 2591 medical orders for 1122 patients, 1051/2591 (40.56%) medical orders were off-label; 445/2591(17.17%) medical orders were off-label and off-NCCN guidelines. In 445 off-label and off-NCCN medical orders, 399 (89.66%) were unapproved indications, 38 (8.54%) were unapproved drug concentration and 12 (2.70%) were unapproved route of administration. Percentage of off-label and off-NCCN guidelines drug uses in male was higher than that in female (21.92% vs. 11.39%, P<0.01). Compared with other lines of treatment, percentage of off-label and off-NCCN guidelines drug uses in postoperative adjuvant was the smallest (P<0.01) and percentage in three or multi-line treatments was the highest (P<0.01). The pancreatic cancer possessed the highest percentage (38.74%) of off-label and off-NCCN guidelines drug uses among all types of cancer (P<0.01).Conclusion: Off-label uses of antineoplastic drugs are generally common in China hospitals based on NCCN guidelines. The fact suggests that anti-tumor treatment was relatively standard in China. Off-label and off-NCCN guidelines drug uses were mainly for individual treatment. Doctors should fully consider the adverse drug reaction, contraindication, cautions and increase the drug security monitoring. Uncorrected drug concentration should be avoided for drug ris
