    CloudJet4BigData: Streamlining Big Data via an Accelerated Socket Interface

    Big data needs to feed users with fresh processing results and cloud platforms can be used to speed up big data applications. This paper describes a new data communication protocol (CloudJet) for long distance and large volume big data accessing operations to alleviate the large latencies encountered in sharing big data resources in the clouds. It encapsulates a dynamic multi-stream/multi-path engine at the socket level, which conforms to Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) and thereby can accelerate any POSIX-compatible applications across IP based networks. It was demonstrated that CloudJet accelerates typical big data applications such as very large database (VLDB), data mining, media streaming and office applications by up to tenfold in real-world tests

    A Novel Preparation Method for 5-Aminosalicylic Acid Loaded Eudragit S100 Nanoparticles

    In this study, solution enhanced dispersion by supercritical fluids (SEDS) technique was applied for the preparation of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) loaded Eudragit S100 (EU S100) nanoparticles. The effects of various process variables including pressure, temperature, 5-ASA concentration and solution flow rate on morphology, particle size, 5-ASA loading and entrapment efficiency of nanoparticles were investigated. Under the appropriate conditions, drug-loaded nanoparticles exhibited a spherical shape and small particle size with narrow particle size distribution. In addition, the nanoparticles prepared were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses. The results showed that 5-ASA was imbedded into EU S100 in an amorphous state after SEDS processing and the SEDS process did not induce degradation of 5-ASA

    Effect of Malondialdehyde Oxidation on Physicochemical Properties and Color Stability of Yak Meat Sarcoplasmic Proteins

    Sarcoplasmic proteins (SP) derived from yak meat were oxidized by malondialdehyde (MDA) at different concentrations. The effects of lipid oxidation on physicochemical properties and color stability of SP were investigated by evaluating side-chain amino acid oxidation, protein structure and color of SP and the oxidation status of myoglobin (Mb). The results showed that after MDA oxidation, the a* value, b* value, C* value, and deoxymyoglobin and oxymyoglobin contents of SP significantly decreased (P < 0.05), and the L* value, metmyoglobin content, and ferrylmyoglobin concentration significantly increased (P < 0.05), indicating that MDA oxidation lowered color stability. The contents of carbonyl groups and dimeric tyrosine, the fluorescence intensity of SP-MDA adducts, and the relative contents of β-helix and β-turn significantly increased (P < 0.05), and total sulfhydryl content, surface hydrophobicity, intrinsic fluorescence intensity, and the relative contents of α-helix and random coil significantly declined (P < 0.05). Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) showed blurred expansion of small molecule bands and the formation of macromolecular aggregates, suggesting that MDA promoted the oxidation and aggregation of SP. Pearson correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between MDA oxidation and physicochemical properties and color stability of SP (P < 0.05). This study reveals that MDA alters the structure of SP by directly oxidizing it or mediating Mb oxidation, causing cross-linked aggregation of SP and reducing its color stability

    Feasibility of LoRa for Smart Home Indoor Localization

    With the advancement of low-power and low-cost wireless technologies in the past few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been growing rapidly in numerous areas of Industry 4.0 and smart homes. With the development of many applications for the IoT, indoor localization, i.e., the capability to determine the physical location of people or devices, has become an important component of smart homes. Various wireless technologies have been used for indoor localization includingWiFi, ultra-wideband (UWB), Bluetooth low energy (BLE), radio-frequency identification (RFID), and LoRa. The ability of low-cost long range (LoRa) radios for low-power and long-range communication has made this radio technology a suitable candidate for many indoor and outdoor IoT applications. Additionally, research studies have shown the feasibility of localization with LoRa radios. However, indoor localization with LoRa is not adequately explored at the home level, where the localization area is relatively smaller than offices and corporate buildings. In this study, we first explore the feasibility of ranging with LoRa. Then, we conduct experiments to demonstrate the capability of LoRa for accurate and precise indoor localization in a typical apartment setting. Our experimental results show that LoRa-based indoor localization has an accuracy better than 1.6 m in line-of-sight scenario and 3.2 m in extreme non-line-of-sight scenario with a precision better than 25 cm in all cases, without using any data filtering on the location estimates

    Nitrogen addition mediates the response of foliar stoichiometry to phosphorus addition: a meta-analysis

    Background Changes in foliar nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry play important roles in predicting the effects of global change on ecosystem structure and function. However, there is substantial debate on the effects of P addition on foliar N and P stoichiometry, particularly under different levels of N addition. Thus, we conducted a global meta-analysis to investigate how N addition alters the effects of P addition on foliar N and P stoichiometry across different rates and durations of P addition and plant growth types based on more than 1150 observations. Results We found that P addition without N addition increased foliar N concentrations, whereas P addition with N addition had no effect. The positive effects of P addition on foliar P concentrations were greater without N addition than with N addition. Additionally, the effects of P addition on foliar N, P and N:P ratios varied with the rate and duration of P addition. In particular, short-term or low-dose P addition with and without N addition increased foliar N concentration, and the positive effects of short-term or low-dose P addition on foliar P concentrations were greater without N addition than with N addition. The responses of foliar N and P stoichiometry of evergreen plants to P addition were greater without N addition than with N addition. Moreover, regardless of N addition, soil P availability was more effective than P resorption efficiency in predicting the changes in foliar N and P stoichiometry in response to P addition. Conclusions Our results highlight that increasing N deposition might alter the response of foliar N and P stoichiometry to P addition and demonstrate the important effect of the experimental environment on the results. These results advance our understanding of the response of plant nutrient use efficiency to P addition with increasing N deposition

    Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of the MYB transcription factor in moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis)

    The MYB family, one of the largest transcription factor (TF) families in the plant kingdom, plays vital roles in cell formation, morphogenesis and signal transduction, as well as responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the underlying function of bamboo MYB TFs remains unclear. To gain insight into the status of these proteins, a total of 85 PeMYBs, which were further divided into 11 subgroups, were identified in moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) by using a genome-wide search strategy. Gene structure analysis showed that PeMYBs were significantly different, with exon numbers varying from 4 to 13. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that PeMYBs clustered into 27 clades, of which the function of 18 clades has been predicted. In addition, almost all of the PeMYBs were differently expressed in leaves, panicles, rhizomes and shoots based on RNA-seq data. Furthermore, qRT-PCR analysis showed that 12 PeMYBs related to the biosynthesis and deposition of the secondary cell wall (SCW) were constitutively expressed, and their transcript abundance levels have changed significantly with increasing height of the bamboo shoots, for which the degree of lignification continuously increased. This result indicated that these PeMYBs might play fundamental roles in SCW thickening and bamboo shoot lignification. The present comprehensive and systematic study on the members of the MYB family provided a reference and solid foundation for further functional analysis of MYB TFs in moso bamboo

    The impact of statin use before intensive care unit admission on patients with acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery

    Background: Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) is a common and serious complication after cardiac surgery. The influence of statin use before surgery on the renal outcome of patients undergoing cardiac surgery is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of statins on postoperative renal outcomes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.Methods: We included CSA-AKI patients in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)—IV database and were divided into statin group and non-statin group according to whether they used statins before entering intensive care units (ICU). The main outcomes were hospitalization and 30-day mortality, and the secondary outcomes were 60-day mortality and 90-day mortality. We used propensity score matching (PSM) to adjust for confounding factors. The 95% confidence interval (CI) and risk ratio (RO) were calculated by the COX proportional regression model. At the same time, stratified analysis was used to explore whether the relationship between the statins use before intensive care units and mortality was different in each subgroup and whether the relationship between different doses of Atorvastatin and mortality was different.Result: We identified 675 pre-ICU statin users and 2095 non-statin users. In the COX proportional regression model, pre-ICU statin use was associated with decreased in-hospital (HR = 0.407, 95%confidence interval 0.278–0.595, p &lt; 0.001) and 30-day mortality (HR = 0.407, 95%CI 0.279–0.595, p &lt; 0.001). The survival rate of patients who took statins before entering ICU was significantly higher than that of those who did not use statins at 30 days, 60 days and 90 days. There is a significant interaction between patients with aged&gt;65 years (HR = 0.373, 95%CI 0.240–0.581, p &lt; 0.001), Acute kidney injury grade I (HR = 0.244, 95%CI 0.118–0.428, p &lt; 0.001), and without post-myocardial infarction syndrome (HR = 0.344, 95%CI 0.218–0.542, p &lt; 0.001). The mortality in hospital and 60 days of CSA-AKI patients treated with ≥80 mg Atorvastatin before operation was significantly reduced (p &lt; 0.05).Conclusion: The pre-ICU statin use was significantly associated with decreased risk in hospital and 30-day mortality. The preoperative use of ≥80 mg Atorvastatin may improve the prognosis of CSA-AKI
