SCOOTER: A compact and scalable dynamic labeling scheme for XML updates
Although dynamic labeling schemes for XML have been the
focus of recent research activity, there are significant challenges still to be overcome. In particular, though there are labeling schemes that ensure a compact label representation when creating an XML document, when the document is subject to repeated and arbitrary deletions and insertions, the labels grow rapidly and consequently have a significant impact on query and update performance. We review the outstanding issues todate and in this paper we propose SCOOTER - a new dynamic labeling scheme for XML. The new labeling scheme can completely avoid relabeling
existing labels. In particular, SCOOTER can handle frequently skewed insertions gracefully. Theoretical analysis and experimental results confirm the scalability, compact representation, efficient growth rate and performance of SCOOTER in comparison to existing dynamic labeling schemes
On localization in holomorphic equivariant cohomology
We prove a localization formula for a "holomorphic equivariant cohomology"
attached to the Atiyah algebroid of an equivariant holomorphic vector bundle.
This generalizes Feng-Ma, Carrell-Liebermann, Baum-Bott and K. Liu's
localization formulas.Comment: 16 pages. Completely rewritten, new title. v3: Minor changes in the

Microscopic theory for quantum mirages in quantum corrals
Scanning tunneling microscopy permits to image the Kondo resonance of a
single magnetic atom adsorbed on a metallic surface. When the magnetic impurity
is placed at the focus of an elliptical quantum corral, a Kondo resonance has
been recently observed both on top of the impurity and on top of the focus
where no magnetic impurity is present. This projection of the Kondo resonance
to a remote point on the surface is referred to as quantum mirage. We present a
quantum mechanical theory for the quantum mirage inside an ideal quantum corral
and predict that the mirage will occur in corrals with shapes other than
elliptical
Direct Torque Control System and Sensorless Technique of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
AbstractThe direct torque control theory has achieved great success in the control of induction motors. However, in the DTC drive system of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) proposed a few years ago, there are many basic theoretical problems that must be clarified. This paper describes an investigation about the effect of the zero voltage space vectors in the DTC system of PMSM and points out that if using the zero voltage space vectors rationally, not only can the DTC system be driven successfully but also the torque ripple is reduced and the performance of the system is improved. This paper also studies the sensorless technique in the DTC system of PMSM and configures the DTC system of PMSM with sensorless technique including zero voltage space vectors. Numerical simulations and experimental tests have proved the theory correct. In the condition of sensorless, the DTC system of PMSM is wide-rangely speed adjusting, and the ratio of speed adjustment is 1:100
A methodology for determining amino-acid substitution matrices from set covers
We introduce a new methodology for the determination of amino-acid
substitution matrices for use in the alignment of proteins. The new methodology
is based on a pre-existing set cover on the set of residues and on the
undirected graph that describes residue exchangeability given the set cover.
For fixed functional forms indicating how to obtain edge weights from the set
cover and, after that, substitution-matrix elements from weighted distances on
the graph, the resulting substitution matrix can be checked for performance
against some known set of reference alignments and for given gap costs. Finding
the appropriate functional forms and gap costs can then be formulated as an
optimization problem that seeks to maximize the performance of the substitution
matrix on the reference alignment set. We give computational results on the
BAliBASE suite using a genetic algorithm for optimization. Our results indicate
that it is possible to obtain substitution matrices whose performance is either
comparable to or surpasses that of several others, depending on the particular
scenario under consideration
Symbolic stochastic dynamical systems viewed as binary N-step Markov chains
A theory of systems with long-range correlations based on the consideration
of binary N-step Markov chains is developed. In the model, the conditional
probability that the i-th symbol in the chain equals zero (or unity) is a
linear function of the number of unities among the preceding N symbols. The
correlation and distribution functions as well as the variance of number of
symbols in the words of arbitrary length L are obtained analytically and
numerically. A self-similarity of the studied stochastic process is revealed
and the similarity group transformation of the chain parameters is presented.
The diffusion Fokker-Planck equation governing the distribution function of the
L-words is explored. If the persistent correlations are not extremely strong,
the distribution function is shown to be the Gaussian with the variance being
nonlinearly dependent on L. The applicability of the developed theory to the
coarse-grained written and DNA texts is discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
A novel axial flux magnetically geared machine for power split application
This paper proposes an axial flux magnetically geared (AFMG) permanent magnet (PM) machine for power split application in hybrid electric vehicles. The proposed AFMG machine has the merits of simple structure and improved torque density by combining a magnetic gear with a PM machine. The machine can realize power split with the help of dual mechanical ports and one electrical port, i.e., the input mechanical power and/or electrical power produced by the machine can be split or integrated. The operation principle and two feasible stator slot/rotor pole combinations are analyzed. Moreover, the influence of the machine parameters on the output torque as well as the performance of both combinations are investigated and compared by using JMAG three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). In addition, the method of boosting the machine torque is described and experiment results of the proposed machine prototype are provided and compared with FEA results
ac Josephson effect in the resonant tunneling through mesoscopic superconducting junctions
We investigate ac Josephson effect in the resonant tunneling through
mesoscopic superconducting junctions. In the presence of microwave irradiation,
we show that the trajectory of multiple Andreev reflections can be closed by
emitting or absorbing photons. Consequently, photon-assisted Andreev states are
formed and play the role of carrying supercurrent. On the Shapiro steps, dc
component appears when the resonant level is near a series of positions with
spacing of half of the microwave frequency. Analytical result is derived in the
limit of infinite superconducting gap, based on which new features of ac
Josephson effect are revealed.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Exact Description of D-branes via Tachyon Condensation
We examine the fluctuations around a Dp-brane solution in an unstable D-brane
system using boundary states and also boundary string field theory. We show
that the fluctuations correctly reproduce the fields on the Dp-brane. Plugging
these into the action of the unstable D-brane system, we recover not only the
tension and RR charge, but also full effective action of the Dp-brane exactly.
Our method works for general unstable D-brane systems and provides a simple
proof of D-brane descent/ascent relations under the tachyon condensation. In
the lowest dimensional unstable D-brane system, called K-matrix theory,
D-branes are described in terms of operator algebra. We show the equivalence of
the geometric and algebraic descriptions of a D-brane world-volume manifold
using the equivalence between path integral and operator formulation of the
boundary quantum mechanics. As a corollary, the Atiyah-Singer index theorem is
naturally obtained by looking at the coupling to RR-fields. We also generalize
the argument to type I string theory.Comment: 63 pages, LaTeX, no figures, v2: references adde
