On Cultivating Senior Middle School Students’ Cross-Cultural Awareness in English Classes

    Get PDF
Language is not only an important means for people to communicate, but also an important carrier of cultural heritage. But at the present stage of high school English teaching in China, teachers merely put the emphasis on the basic knowledge of English, such as the vocabulary, grammar and so on, while ignoring cultivating cross-cultural awareness. By empirical methods and the analysis of the survey results, the present study analyzes the reasons and points out some ways to cope with the problem

Study on the Effect of Minimum Wage Increases in China

    Get PDF
This paper studies minimum wage increases in China since the implement of minimum wage guarantee system. This paper compares minimum wage with average wage, per capita annual consumption expenditure of urban households, and points out the defections in minimum wage increases. Then, based on the study above, this paper analyzes the effect of minimum wage increases from three aspects, including the cost of labor, labor productivity and industrial structure

Removal of carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole by MBR under anoxic and aerobic conditions

    Get PDF
This study reveals for the first time that near-anoxic conditions (dissolved oxygen, DO - 0.5 mg/L) can be a favorable operating regime for the removal of the persistent micropollutant carbamazepine by MBR treatment. The removal efficiencies of carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole by an MBR were systematically examined and compared under near-anoxic (DO\u27 0.5 mg/L) and aerobic (DO\u3e 2 mg/L) conditions. Preliminary batch tests confirmed that sulfamethoxazole is amenable to both aerobic and anoxic biotransformation. However, carbamazepine-a known persistent compound-showed degradation only under an anoxic environment. In good agreement with the batch tests, during near-anoxic operation, under a high loading of 750 J.l8 /Ld, an exceptionally high removal (68 ± 10%) of carbamazepine was achieved. In contrast, low removal efficiency (12 ± 11%) of carbamazepine was observed during operation under aerobic conditions. On the other hand, an average removal efficiency of 65% of sulfamethoxazole was achieved irrespective of the DO concentrations

Based on the contributions of the aesthetics of reception and effect, particularly from authors such as Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser, the present article focuses on the reception of José Saramago in Chinese academic criticism. Through the collection and analysis of 39 academic works (published in journals, conference proceedings, and dissertations) about José Saramago and his works translated into China, we aim to know the interpretations of Chinese scholars about Saramago’s creation, observe the trend of study regarding this Portuguese writer, to verify which works have been most analyzed and the dominant perspectives of analysis in the Chinese academic field. This is, therefore, an introductory and seminal study that aims to open the way to future works on the presence of this great Portuguese-speaking writer in China.publishersversionpublishe

Multiple bombesin-like peptides with opposite functions from skin of Odorrana grahami

AbstractBombesin-like peptides (BLPs) are a family of neuroendocrinic peptides that mediate a variety of biological activities. Three mature BLPs from the skin secretions of the frog Odorrana grahami were purified. Several bombesin-like peptide cDNA sequences encoding precursors of BLPs were identified from the skin cDNA library of O. grahami. This is the maximal diversity of BLPs ever found in animals. Five mature BLPs (B1–B5) based on the amino acid sequences derived from the cDNA cloning were synthesized. In the in vitro myotropic contraction experiment, all synthesized BLPs displayed a stimulating effect toward rat stomach strips, except B4 and B5 which showed the opposite effect, suggesting that certain BLPs may act as antagonists of bombesin receptors while most other BLPs act as agonists. This finding will facilitate the finding of novel bombesin receptors and novel ligands of bombesin receptors. The diversity of amphibian BLPs and their precursors were also analyzed and results suggest that amphibian BLPs and corresponding precursors of various sizes and processing patterns can be used as markers of taxonomic and molecular phylogenetics. The remarkable similarity of preproregions gives rise to very different BLPs and 3′-terminal regions in distantly related frog species, suggesting that the corresponding genes form a multigene family originating from a common ancestor. The diversification of BLP loci could thus be part of an evolutionary strategy developed by amphibian species as a result of shifts to novel ecological niches when environmental factors change rapidly

Administering plasmid DNA encoding tumor vessel-anchored IFN-α for localizing gene product within or into tumors

    Get PDF
Tumor-targeted gene delivery has been intensively studied in the field of gene therapy, but no attention has been given to targeting the therapeutic gene products, which are transcribed and translated from the injected genes, into tumors. Targeting immune stimulatory gene products into tumors is the key to triggering tumor-specific CD8+ T-cell responses and reducing systemic toxicity. To target the gene products generated from the injected genes into tumors, genes encoding the tumor-targeted fusion gene product were generated and administered locally and systemically via electroporation. As anticipated, administration of a therapeutic gene encoding IFN-α and the tumor vessel-targeted peptide CDGRC fusion gene product minimizes the leakage of immunostimulatory cytokine from tumors into the blood circulation, increases the infiltration of CD8+ T cells into tumors, induces a high magnitude of cytotoxic T-cell lysis (CTL) activity, and reduces tumor vessel density. As a result, tumor growth was more significantly inhibited by administering the IFN-α-CDGRC gene than by administering the wild-type IFN-α gene. The same result was obtained with the systemic administration of the tumor-targeted IFN-α gene. This gene product-based tumor-targeted gene therapy approach could complement any other tumor-targeted gene delivery method for improving tumor-targeting efficiency
