Fabrication of large tungsten structures by chemical vapor deposition
Process is accomplished by reducing tungsten hexafluoride with hydrogen. Metallic tungsten of essentially 100 percent purity and density is produced and built up as dense deposit on heated mandrel assembly. Process variations are building up, sealing or bonding refractory metals at temperatures below transition temperatures of base metal substrates
Proposal for demonstrating the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect with matter waves
The Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect is a striking demonstration of destructive
quantum interference between pairs of indistinguishable bosons, realised so far
only with massless photons. Here we propose an experiment which can realise
this effect in the matter-wave regime using pair-correlated atoms produced via
a collision of two Bose-Einstein condensates and subjected to two laser induced
Bragg pulses. We formulate a novel measurement protocol appropriate for the
multimode matter-wave field, which---unlike the typical two-mode optical
case---bypasses the need for repeated measurements under different displacement
settings of the beam-splitter, thus dramatically reducing the number of
experimental runs required to map out the interference visibility. The protocol
can be utilised in related matter-wave schemes; here we focus on condensate
collisions and by simulating the entire experiment we predict a HOM-dip
visibility of ~69%. By being larger than 50%, such a visibility highlights
strong quantum correlations between the atoms and paves the way for a possible
demonstration of a Bell inequality violation with massive particles in a

Benchmark experiments with global climate models applicable to extra-solar gas giant planets in the shallow atmosphere approximation
The growing field of exoplanetary atmospheric modelling has seen little work on standardised benchmark tests for its models, limiting understanding of the dependence of results on specific models and conditions. With spatially resolved observations as yet difficult to obtain, such a test is invaluable. Although an intercomparison test for models of tidally locked gas giant planets has previously been suggested and carried out, the data provided were limited in terms of comparability. Here, the shallow PUMA model is subjected to such a test, and detailed statistics produced to facilitate comparison, with both time means and the associated standard deviations displayed, removing the time dependence and providing a measure of the variability. Model runs have been analysed to determine the variability between resolutions, and the effect of resolution on the energy spectra studied. Superrotation is a robust and reproducible feature at all resolutions

Catheter tip force transducer for cardiovascular research
A force transducer for measuring dynamic force activity within the heart of a subject essentially consists of a U-shaped beam of low elastic compliance material. Two lines extend from the beams's legs and a long coil spring is attached to the beam. A strain gauge is coupled to one of the beam's legs to sense deflections thereof. The beam with the tines and most of the spring are surrounded by a flexible tube, defining a catheter, which is insertable into a subject's heart through an appropriate artery. The tines are extractable from the catheter for implantation into the myocardium by pushing on the end of the spring which extends beyond the external end of the catheter
Bacillus subtilis regulatory protein GerE
GerE is the latest-acting of a series of factors which regulate gene expression in the mother cell during sporulation in Bacillus. The gene encoding GerE has been cloned from B. subtilis and overexpressed in Escherichia coli. Purified GerE has been crystallized by the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method using polyethylene glycol as a precipitant. The small plate-like crystals belong to the monoclinic space group C2 and diffract beyond 2.2 Angstrom resolution with a synchrotron radiation X-ray source
[OII] emitters in the GOODS field at z~1.85: a homogeneous measure of evolving star formation
We present the results of a deep, near-infrared, narrow band imaging survey
at a central wavelength of 1.062 microns (FWHM=0.01 microns) in the GOODS-South
field using the ESO VLT instrument, HAWK-I. The data are used to carry out the
highest redshift search for [OII]3727 emission line galaxies to date. The
images reach an emission line flux limit (5 sigma) of 1.5 x 10^-17 erg cm^-2
s^-1, additionally making the survey the deepest of its kind at high redshift.
In this paper we identify a sample of [OII]3727 emission line objects at
redshift z~1.85 in a co-moving volume of ~4100 Mpc^3. Objects are selected
using an observed equivalent width (EW_obs) threshold of EW_obs = 50 angstroms.
The sample is used to derive the space density and constrain the luminosity
function of [OII] emitters at z=1.85. We find that the space density of objects
with observed [OII] luminosities in the range log(L_[OII]) > 41.74 erg s^-1 is
log(rho)=-2.45+/-0.14 Mpc^-3, a factor of 2 greater than the observed space
density of [OII] emitters reported at z~1.4. After accounting for completeness
and assuming an internal extinction correction of A_Halpha=1 mag (equivalent to
A_[OII]=1.87), we report a star formation rate density of rho* ~0.38+/-0.06
Msun yr^-1 Mpc^-3. We independently derive the dust extinction of the sample
using 24 micron fluxes and find a mean extinction of A_[OII]=0.98+/-0.11
magnitudes (A_Halpha=0.52). This is significantly lower than the A_Halpha=1
(A[OII]=1.86) mag value widely used in the literature. Finally we incorporate
this improved extinction correction into the star formation rate density
measurement and report rho*~0.24+/-0.06 Msun yr^-1 Mpc^-3.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Time-Dependent Invariants for Dirac Equation and Newton-Wigner Position Operator
For Dirac equation, operator-invariants containing explicit time-dependence
in parallel to known time-dependent invariants of nonrelativistic Schr\"odinger
equation are introduced and discussed. As an example, a free Dirac particle is
considered and new invariants are constructed for it. The integral of motion,
which is initial Newton-Wigner position operator, is obtained explicitly for a
free Dirac particle. For such particle with kick modeled by delta-function of
time, the time-depending integral, which has physical meaning of initial

Electron-impact excitation of X 1Sigma<sub>g</sub><sup>+</sup>(v[double-prime]=0) to the a[double-prime] 1Sigma<sub>g</sub><sup>+</sup>, b 1Piu, c3 1Piu, o3 1Piu, b[prime] 1Sigma<sub>u</sub><sup>+</sup>, c<sub>4</sub><sup>[prime]</sup> 1Sigma<sub>u</sub><sup>+</sup>, G 3Piu, and F 3Piu states of molecular nitrogen
Measurements of differential cross sections (DCSs) for electron-impact excitation of the a[double-prime] 1Sigmag+, b 1Piu, c3 1Piu, o3 1Piu, b[prime] 1Sigmau+, c4[prime] 1Sigmau+, G 3Piu, and F 3Piu states in N2 from the X 1Sigmag+(v[double-prime]=0) ground level are presented. The DCSs were obtained from energy-loss spectra in the region of 12 to 13.82 eV measured at incident energies of 17.5, 20, 30, 50, and 100 eV and for scattering angles ranging from 2° to 130°. The analysis of the spectra follows a different algorithm from that employed in a previous study of N2 for the valence states [Khakoo et al. Phys. Rev. A 71, 062703 (2005)], since the 1Piu and 1Sigmau+ states form strongly interacting Rydberg-valence series. The results are compared with existing data
