    The role of the environment in eliciting phantom-like sensations in non-amputees

    Following the amputation of a limb, many amputees report that they can still vividly perceive its presence despite conscious knowledge that it is not physically there. However, our ability to probe the mental representation of this experience is limited by the intractable and often distressing pain associated with amputation. Here, we present a method for eliciting phantom-like experiences in non-amputees using a variation of the rubber hand illusion in which a finger has been removed from the rubber hand. An interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed that the structure of this experience shares a wide range of sensory attributes with subjective reports of phantom limb experience. For example, when the space where the ring finger should have been on the rubber hand was stroked, 93% of participants (i.e., 28/30) reported the vivid presence of a finger that they could not see and a total of 57% (16/28) of participants who felt that the finger was present reported one or more additional sensory qualities such as tingling or numbness (25%; 7/28) and alteration in the perceived size of the finger (50%; 14/28). These experiences indicate the adaptability of body experience and share some characteristics of the way that phantom limbs are described. Participants attributed changes to the shape and size of their “missing” finger to the way in which the experimenter mimed stroking in the area occupied by the missing finger. This alteration of body perception is similar to the phenomenon of telescoping experienced by people with phantom limbs and suggests that our sense of embodiment not only depends on internal body representations but on perceptual information coming from peripersonal space

    Indigenous plant based coagulants/disinfectants and sand filter media for surface water treatment in Bamenda, Cameroon

    An Evaluation of plant- based coagulants and disinfectant-sand filter  medium for surface water treatment in Bamenda, Cameroon using  bacterial analyses and turbidity were carried out. 100L of very turbid surface water (Turbidity approx. 500NTU) was pretreated with 100 seeds of Moringa oleifera, and further filtered through a sand filter drum (120 L carrying capacity) made of fine, coarse sand, charcoal and gravel. The mean total heterotrophic bacterial counts, Escherichia coli, coliform, pseudomonas and yeast counts, as well as turbidity of untreated surface water significantly reduced by 85 to 95%. The results suggested that the mean values of the same parameters for sand filtered pond water alone was significantly lower than the corresponding mean values obtained for plant coagulant treated surface water. The findings from this study  demonstrates strongly that a biocoagulant sand filter media (plant based coagulant-sand filter drum) could be applied to treat contaminated surface water, rendering it free from solids and pathogens.Key words: Plant, coagulants, indigenous, surface, water, treatment, microbes, Cameroon

    Hierarchical Re-estimation of Topic Models for Measuring Topical Diversity

    A high degree of topical diversity is often considered to be an important characteristic of interesting text documents. A recent proposal for measuring topical diversity identifies three elements for assessing diversity: words, topics, and documents as collections of words. Topic models play a central role in this approach. Using standard topic models for measuring diversity of documents is suboptimal due to generality and impurity. General topics only include common information from a background corpus and are assigned to most of the documents in the collection. Impure topics contain words that are not related to the topic; impurity lowers the interpretability of topic models and impure topics are likely to get assigned to documents erroneously. We propose a hierarchical re-estimation approach for topic models to combat generality and impurity; the proposed approach operates at three levels: words, topics, and documents. Our re-estimation approach for measuring documents' topical diversity outperforms the state of the art on PubMed dataset which is commonly used for diversity experiments.Comment: Proceedings of the 39th European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR2017

    Barriers to Optimal Health for Under 5s Experiencing Homelessness and Living In Temporary Accommodation in High-Income Countries: A Scoping Review

    BACKGROUND: The first 5 years of life are crucial for optimising growth, health, and cognitive development. However, many children do not reach their full cognitive and developmental potential because of multilevel barriers, including those resulting from poverty and homelessness. This review summarises the evidence characterising the barriers to achieving optimal health and cognitive outcomes, and to accessing health services for homeless children younger than 5 years of age (U5s)-one of the most vulnerable populations in High Income Countries (HICs). METHODS: For this scoping review, we followed the PRISMA-ScR checklist and CATS framework. We searched Medline, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, OVID Maternity and Infant Care, and The Cochrane Library (publications dates from Jan 1, 1980, to Jun 23, 2020) using the key words “homelessness”, “housing”, “paediatrics”, “interpersonal relations”, “social exclusion”, “toddler”, “children under 5”, “engagement”, and “communication and insecurity”. The search strategy yielded 3253 articles. Retrieved articles were organised by study design. Because of the considerable heterogeneity of methods and outcomes, we used a narrative synthesis analytic approach. Our outcome of interest was barriers to optimal health and accessing health services, focusing on U5s living in HICs. FINDINGS: Twenty-nine full texts were selected in the final synthesis, including primary research studies and systematic or narrative reviews of primary research studies from HICs. There was limited evidence describing links among housing insecurity, health, and cognitive outcomes in U5s. This age group was rarely studied as a discrete group and often combined with older ages (eg, ≀25 years). The quality of articles varied greatly because of the heterogeneity in study design. Nevertheless, important themes were identified: barriers were described at the individual and family level (eg, ethnicity, immigration status, and fear), system level (eg, policies, poor access to medication, absence of care plan, and no insurance) and community level (eg, transportation limitations and poor housing conditions). INTERPRETATION: Although evidence is sparse, further methodologically rigorous research is needed to identify what barriers exist for U5s and their parents in accessing health services, and how this affects the child’s health. The multi-level nature of these barriers implies a system’s approach may be required. However, more evidence is needed including cross-sector studies and tailored interventions to address these barriers by working directly with experts with experience of social exclusion and their children

    Hierarchical multi-scale models for mechanical response prediction of highly filled elastic–plastic and viscoplastic particulate composites

    Though a vast amount of literature can be found on modelling particulate reinforced composites and suspensions, the treatment of such materials at very high volume fractions (>90%), typical of high performance energetic materials, remains a challenge. The latter is due to the very wide particle size distribution needed to reach such a high value of In order to meet this challenge, multiscale models that can treat the presence of particles at various scales are needed. This study presents a novel hierarchical multiscale method for predicting the effective properties of elasto-viscoplastic polymeric composites at high . Firstly, simulated microstructures with randomly packed spherical inclusions in a polymeric matrix were generated. Homogenised properties predicted using the finite element (FE) method were then iteratively passed in a hierarchical multi-scale manner as modified matrix properties until the desired filler was achieved. The validated hierarchical model was then applied to a real composite with microstructures reconstructed from image scan data, incorporating cohesive elements to predict debonding of the filler particles and subsequent catastrophic failure. The predicted behaviour was compared to data from uniaxial tensile tests. Our method is applicable to the prediction of mechanical behaviour of any highly filled composite with a non-linear matrix, arbitrary particle filler shape and a large particle size distribution, surpassing limitations of traditional analytical models and other published computational models

    Social relationship experiences of transgender people and their relational partners: A meta-synthesis

For transgender people, strong supportive social relationships may be paramount to their overall health and well-being due to their marginalised status in society. Objective: This review aimed to investigate what is currently known about social relationship experiences of transgender people and their relational partners (e.g., family members, romantic partners). Method: Thirty-nine qualitative papers were extracted from Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, and PubMed that related to social relationships of transgender people. These papers were analysed via a qualitative meta-synthesis. Results: Forty-nine second order themes were identified, initially organised into relational partner clusters (e.g., family, friends, work colleagues) for specific phenomena, then these were synthesized into five overarching conceptual themes: (1) Development of relationships through transition and beyond, (2) Coping strategies of transgender people and their relational partners, (3) Reciprocal support in social relationships, (4) Stigma enacted and ameliorated interpersonally, and (5) Influence of stigma on social health and well-being. Discussion and conclusions: These overarching themes show the potential characteristics that assist in the health-buffering role of social relationships for transgender people and their relational partners. Of particular note, stigma was reported as a common negative experience by transgender people and their relational partners, and open communicative social relationships had positive effects on self-conceptualisations of identity, which were inferred to protect against the damaging effects of stigma. We discuss the various implications and applications of this meta-synthesis to future research and clinical settings as well as how it can inform healthcare policy to support transgender people.Devon Partnership NHS Trus

    Investigation into the reaction of reactive dyes with carboxylate salts and the application of carboxylate-modified reactive dyes to cotton

    Ink-jet printing of cellulosic fabrics with reactive dyes typically requires that the fabric is pretreated with alkali, prior to printing, to facilitate efficient fixation of the dye. In this paper we evaluate the use of sodium formate and other carboxylate salts as a neutral (pH 6.5) pretreatment process. The thickened, prepared-for-print pad liquor contained at least 50 gdm⁻³ of the selected carboxylate salt and was applied to the cotton fabrics by a pad-dry procedure. The fabric was then ink-jet printed with reactive dye inks, followed by standard steaming and washing-off processes. The pH of the carboxylate salt pretreatment was 6.5 and the aqueous extracts from the print fabrics at the end of the steaming process remained at pH 6.5. It was observed that even at pH 6.5, in the presence of selected carboxylates, significant reactive dye fixation could be achieved on a cotton substrate, whereas in the absence of the carboxylate, very little or even zero fixation was achieved. Infrared and capillary electrophoresis analyses of model reactions of reactive dyes with the carboxylate salts indicated that reactive ester residues were formed, and which subsequently promoted reaction with the cellulosic substrates. In addition to improving reactive dye fixation in ink-jet printing, the carboxylate-modified dyes were also demonstrated to improve long-liquor dyeing properties on cotton substrates. As an extension of this carboxylate-based printing process, the incorporation of lithium acetate (100 gdm⁻³) into the ink formulation was further studied and it was demonstrated that the necessity for a preparative pretreatment process could be eliminated

    Madagascar's grasses and grasslands:anthropogenic or natural?

    Grasses, by their high productivity even under very low pCO2, their ability to survive repeated burning and to tolerate long dry seasons, have transformed the terrestrial biomes in the Neogene and Quaternary. The expansion of grasslands at the cost of biodiverse forest biomes in Madagascar is often postulated as a consequence of the Holocene settlement of the island by humans. However, we show that the Malagasy grass flora has many indications of being ancient with a long local evolutionary history, much predating the Holocene arrival of humans. First, the level of endemism in the Madagascar grass flora is well above the global average for large islands. Second, a survey of many of the more diverse areas indicates that there is a very high spatial and ecological turnover in the grass flora, indicating a high degree of niche specialization. We also find some evidence that there are both recently disturbed and natural stable grasslands: phylogenetic community assembly indicates that recently severely disturbed grasslands are phylogenetically clustered, whereas more undisturbed grasslands tend to be phylogenetically more evenly distributed. From this evidence, it is likely that grass communities existed in Madagascar long before human arrival and so were determined by climate, natural grazing and other natural factors. Humans introduced zebu cattle farming and increased fire frequency, and may have triggered an expansion of the grasslands. Grasses probably played the same role in the modification of the Malagasy environments as elsewhere in the tropics
