Liquid-Vapor Transition and Critical Behavior of The Ultrasoft Restricted Primitive Model of Polyelectrolytes : a Monte Carlo Study

We present a Monte-Carlo study of the liquid-vapor transition and the critical behavior of a model of polyelectrolytes with soft gaussian charge distributions introduced recently by Coslovich, Hansen, and Kahl [J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{134}, 244514 (2011)]. A finite size study involving four different volumes in the grand canonical ensemble yields a precise determination of the critical temperature, chemical potential, and density of the model. Attempts to determine the nature of the criticality and to obtain reliable values for the critical exponents are not conclusive.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

The Host Galaxy of GRB 060505: Host ISM Properties

We investigate the ISM environment of GRB 060505. Using optical emission-line diagnostic ratios, we compare the ISM properties of the GRB 060505 host region with the hosts of unambiguous long- and short-duration GRBs. We show that the metallicity, ionization state, and star formation rate of the GRB 060505 environment are more consistent with short-duration GRBs than with long-duration GRBs. We compare the metallicity and star formation rates of the GRB 060505 region with four other star-forming regions within the GRB 060505 host galaxy. We find no significant change in metallicity or star formation rate between the GRB 060505 region and the other four host regions. Our results are consistent with a compact-object-merger progenitor for GRB 060505.Comment: 7 pages, two figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

Effective interactions in the colloidal suspensions from HNC theory

The HNC Ornstein-Zernike integral equations are used to determine the properties of simple models of colloidal solutions where the colloids and ions are immersed in a solvent considered as a dielectric continuum and have a size ratio equal to 80 and a charge ratio varying between 1 and 4000. At an infinite dilution of colloids, the effective interactions between colloids and ions are determined for ionic concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.1 mol/l and compared to those derived from the Poisson-Boltzmann theory. At finite concentrations, we discuss on the basis of the HNC results the possibility of an unambiguous definition of the effective interactions between the colloidal molecules.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figure

No Correlation Between Host Galaxy Metallicity and Gamma-Ray Energy Release for Long-Duration Gamma-Ray Bursts

    Get PDF
We compare the redshifts, host galaxy metallicities, and isotropic (E_gamma,iso) and beaming-corrected (E_gamma) gamma-ray energy release of 16 long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) at z < 1. From this comparison, we find no statistically significant correlation between host metallicity and redshift, E_gamma,iso, or E_gamma. These results are at odds with previous theoretical and observational predictions of an inverse correlation between gamma-ray energy release and host metallicity, as well as the standard predictions of metallicity-driven wind effects in stellar evolutionary models. We consider the implications that these results have for LGRB progenitor scenarios, and discuss our current understanding of the role that metallicity plays in the production of LGRBs.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure; accepted to Astrophysical Journa

On time's arrow in Ehrenfest models with reversible deterministic dynamics

We introduce a deterministic, time-reversible version of the Ehrenfest urn model. The distribution of first-passage times from equilibrium to non-equilibrium states and vice versa is calculated. We find that average times for transition to non-equilibrium always scale exponentially with the system size, whereas the time scale for relaxation to equilibrium depends on microscopic dynamics. To illustrate this, we also look at deterministic and stochastic versions of the Ehrenfest model with a distribution of microscopic relaxation times.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, revte
