    Bayesian Optimal Experimental Design for Constitutive Model Calibration

    Computational simulation is increasingly relied upon for high-consequence engineering decisions, and a foundational element to solid mechanics simulations, such as finite element analysis (FEA), is a credible constitutive or material model. Calibration of these complex models is an essential step; however, the selection, calibration and validation of material models is often a discrete, multi-stage process that is decoupled from material characterization activities, which means the data collected does not always align with the data that is needed. To address this issue, an integrated workflow for delivering an enhanced characterization and calibration procedure (Interlaced Characterization and Calibration (ICC)) is introduced. This framework leverages Bayesian optimal experimental design (BOED) to select the optimal load path for a cruciform specimen in order to collect the most informative data for model calibration. The critical first piece of algorithm development is to demonstrate the active experimental design for a fast model with simulated data. For this demonstration, a material point simulator that models a plane stress elastoplastic material subject to bi-axial loading was chosen. The ICC framework is demonstrated on two exemplar problems in which BOED is used to determine which load step to take, e.g., in which direction to increment the strain, at each iteration of the characterization and calibration cycle. Calibration results from data obtained by adaptively selecting the load path within the ICC algorithm are compared to results from data generated under two naive static load paths that were chosen a priori based on human intuition. In these exemplar problems, data generated in an adaptive setting resulted in calibrated model parameters with reduced measures of uncertainty compared to the static settings.Comment: 39 pages, 13 figure

    The parent play questionnaire: development of a parent questionnaire to assess parent–child play and digital media use

    We introduce the Parent Play Questionnaire (PPQ), a parent-report measure designed to assess frequency of parent–infant play, parents’ attitudes towards play with their infant, and infants’ use of digital media. We describe measure development and empirical data across three samples of parent–infant dyads (total N = 414, offspring aged 0.3–2.5 years). Three latent factors explain the PPQ, corresponding with theoretically defined subscales. Summary scores showed good internal consistency and normally distributed results. Weak to moderate correlations were found between the frequency and attitude play scales, and with standardized measures of family social and emotional characteristics. Overall, frequency of digital media use was not correlated with play or broader family variables. Results suggest that the PPQ will be a useful tool for researchers interested in assessing parent–child play during early childhood

    How parents build a case for Autism Spectrum Disorder during initial assessments: “We’re fighting a losing battle”

    Integral to the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the initial assessment through which the existence of a ‘problem’ is first ascertained. Despite this, there remains limited research on this early part of the diagnostic pathway. In this paper, we utilised conversation analysis to examine relevant issues in relation to the practitioner-family interactions that take place within this initial assessment context. Our findings illustrated that parents typically first raised the possibility of the presence of an ASD diagnosis through ‘building a case’, which professionals were then able to ratify or negate. Further, we found that the assessments unfolded sequentially and clinical decisions were typically reached through a distinctive pattern of interaction. These findings have important implications for clinical practice, including for the study of ASD assessments and diagnosis

Data are presented which indicate that a sequence of thyroxine for two days and reserpine for one day, with the sequence repeated over the experimental period, proved to have greatest effect on growth rate

    Evaluation of an integrated plantation forestry and beef production system

    The profitability of timber plantations and combined timber and grazing enterprises were compared to conventional grazing. Scenarios were considered at two sites (one near Kingaroy and one near Nambour) where hardwood plantation forests have been established. At each site a number of contrasting variables were considered. These were: (1) plantation rotation lengths (20, 25 and 30 years); (2) plantation establishment costs (high and low); and (3) prices paid for the timber at harvest (high and low stumpage price). A spreadsheet-based investment analysis tool was used to compare these scenarios. The marginal NPV (net present value) and marginal IRR (internal rate of return) were calculated to indicate the difference in return between the traditional land use of grazing and the introduction of plantation hardwood trees into the traditional just grazing system. Marginal internal rate of return, which is a measure of the marginal return to the extra funds invested, ranged from 0.46% under the most pessimistic option without cattle, to 10.7% under the most optimistic option with cattle, at the Kingaroy site, and from 2.8% to 13.3% under contrasting options at the Nambour site. The more profitable scenarios occurred when planted forests were coupled with cattle grazing systems. The internal rate of return and net present value were particularly sensitive to the price received for the final product when the trees are harvested. Engineered wood products may provide a future high-value option for the hardwood plantation resource and revenues from commercial thinning may be brought forward if an existing technology (i.e. spindle-less lathe technology) is taken up by industry. Expansion of hardwood plantation forests could help meet the increasing demand for hardwood products in Australia if investments in plantation forests are made. The scenarios considered here demonstrate that there is potential for profitable agroforestry systems in the two regions where plantation forests have been successfully established

The communication of these effects into the magnetosphere is known as a positive geomagnetic sudden impulse (+SI), and are observed across latitudes and different phenomena to characterise the propagation of +SI effects through the magnetosphere. A superposition of AlfvĂŠn and compressional propagation modes are observed in magnetometer signatures, with the dominance of these signatures varying with latitude. For the first time, collocated lobe reconnection convection vortices and region 0 field aligned currents are observed preceding the +SI onset, and an enhancement of these signatures is observed as a result of +SI effects. Finally, cusp auroral emission is observed collocated with the convection and current signatures. For the first time, simultaneous observations across multiple phenomena are presented to confirm models of +SI propagation presented previously.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
