The California-Kepler Survey. II. Precise Physical Properties of 2025 Kepler Planets and Their Host Stars
We present stellar and planetary properties for 1305 Kepler Objects of
Interest (KOIs) hosting 2025 planet candidates observed as part of the
California-Kepler Survey. We combine spectroscopic constraints, presented in
Paper I, with stellar interior modeling to estimate stellar masses, radii, and
ages. Stellar radii are typically constrained to 11%, compared to 40% when only
photometric constraints are used. Stellar masses are constrained to 4%, and
ages are constrained to 30%. We verify the integrity of the stellar parameters
through comparisons with asteroseismic studies and Gaia parallaxes. We also
recompute planetary radii for 2025 planet candidates. Because knowledge of
planetary radii is often limited by uncertainties in stellar size, we improve
the uncertainties in planet radii from typically 42% to 12%. We also leverage
improved knowledge of stellar effective temperature to recompute incident
stellar fluxes for the planets, now precise to 21%, compared to a factor of two

The California-Kepler Survey. I. High Resolution Spectroscopy of 1305 Stars Hosting Kepler Transiting Planets
The California-Kepler Survey (CKS) is an observational program to improve our
knowledge of the properties of stars found to host transiting planets by NASA's
Kepler Mission. The improvement stems from new high-resolution optical spectra
obtained using HIRES at the W. M. Keck Observatory. The CKS stellar sample
comprises 1305 stars classified as Kepler Objects of Interest, hosting a total
of 2075 transiting planets. The primary sample is magnitude-limited (Kp < 14.2)
and contains 960 stars with 1385 planets. The sample was extended to include
some fainter stars that host multiple planets, ultra short period planets, or
habitable zone planets. The spectroscopic parameters were determined with two
different codes, one based on template matching and the other on direct
spectral synthesis using radiative transfer. We demonstrate a precision of 60 K
in effective temperature, 0.10 dex in surface gravity, 0.04 dex in [Fe/H], and
1.0 km/s in projected rotational velocity. In this paper we describe the CKS
project and present a uniform catalog of spectroscopic parameters. Subsequent
papers in this series present catalogs of derived stellar properties such as
mass, radius and age; revised planet properties; and statistical explorations
of the ensemble. CKS is the largest survey to determine the properties of
Kepler stars using a uniform set of high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio
spectra. The HIRES spectra are available to the community for independent

CD19 + CD21lo/neg cells are increased in systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in systemic sclerosis (SSc). The purpose of this study was to examine recirculating lymphocytes from SSc patients for potential biomarkers of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from patients with SSc and healthy controls enrolled in the Vanderbilt University Myositis and Scleroderma Treatment Initiative Center cohort between 9/2017-6/2019. Clinical phenotyping was performed by chart abstraction. Immunophenotyping was performed using both mass cytometry and fluorescence cytometry combined with t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding analysis and traditional biaxial gating. Prevention and management of excessive gestational weight gain: a survey of overweight and obese pregnant women
Background - Excessive gestational weight gain is associated with adverse infant, childhood and maternal outcomes and research to develop interventions to address this issue is ongoing. The views of women on gestational weight gain and the resources they would consider helpful in addressing this are however largely unknown. This survey aimed to determine the views of newly pregnant women, living in areas of social disadvantage, on 1) their current body weight and potential gestational weight gain and 2) the resources or interventions they would consider helpful in preventing excessive gestational weight gain.
Methods - A convenience sample of overweight and obese pregnant women living in Fife, UK, were invited to complete a short anonymised questionnaire at their 12 week booking visit.
Results - 428 women, BMI>25 kg/m2, completed the questionnaire. Fifty-four per cent of respondents were obese (231) and 62% were living in areas of mild to moderate deprivation. Over three-quarters of participants felt dissatisfied with their current weight (81%). The majority of women (60%) expressed some concern about potential weight gain. Thirty-nine percent were unconcerned about weight gain during their pregnancy, including 34 women (19%) who reported having retained weight gained in earlier pregnancies. Amongst those concerned about weight gain advice on physical activity (41%) and access to sports/leisure facilities were favoured resources (36%). Fewer women (12%) felt that group sessions on healthy eating or attending a clinic for individualised advice (14%) would be helpful. "Getting time off work" was the most frequently cited barrier (48%) to uptake of resources other than leaflets.
Conclusions- These data suggest a lack of awareness amongst overweight and obese women regarding excessive gestational weight gain. Monitoring of gestational weight gain, and approaches for its management, should be formally integrated into routine antenatal care. Barriers to the uptake of resources to address weight gain are numerous and must be considered in the design of future interventions and services

Identification of sequence changes in myosin II that adjust muscle contraction velocity.
The speed of muscle contraction is related to body size; muscles in larger species contract at slower rates. Since contraction speed is a property of the myosin isoform expressed in a muscle, we investigated how sequence changes in a range of muscle myosin II isoforms enable this slower rate of muscle contraction. We considered 798 sequences from 13 mammalian myosin II isoforms to identify any adaptation to increasing body mass. We identified a correlation between body mass and sequence divergence for the motor domain of the 4 major adult myosin II isoforms (β/Type I, IIa, IIb, and IIx), suggesting that these isoforms have adapted to increasing body mass. In contrast, the non-muscle and developmental isoforms show no correlation of sequence divergence with body mass. Analysis of the motor domain sequence of β-myosin (predominant myosin in Type I/slow and cardiac muscle) from 67 mammals from 2 distinct clades identifies 16 sites, out of 800, associated with body mass (padj 0.05). Both clades change the same small set of amino acids, in the same order from small to large mammals, suggesting a limited number of ways in which contraction velocity can be successfully manipulated. To test this relationship, the 9 sites that differ between human and rat were mutated in the human β-myosin to match the rat sequence. Biochemical analysis revealed that the rat-human β-myosin chimera functioned like the native rat myosin with a 2-fold increase in both motility and in the rate of ADP release from the actin-myosin crossbridge (the step that limits contraction velocity). Thus, these sequence changes indicate adaptation of β-myosin as species mass increased to enable a reduced contraction velocity and heart rate
Susskind's Challenge to the Hartle-Hawking No-Boundary Proposal and Possible Resolutions
Given the observed cosmic acceleration, Leonard Susskind has presented the
following argument against the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal for the
quantum state of the universe: It should most likely lead to a nearly empty
large de Sitter universe, rather than to early rapid inflation. Even if one
adds the condition of observers, they are most likely to form by quantum
fluctuations in de Sitter and therefore not see the structure that we observe.
Here I present my own amplified version of this argument and consider possible
resolutions, one of which seems to imply that inflation expands the universe to

Palaeozoic petroleum systems of the Orcadian Basin to Forth Approaches, Quadrants 6 - 21, UK
This report synthesises the results of the 21CXRM Palaeozoic project to describe the
Carboniferous and Devonian petroleum systems of the Orcadian Basin to Forth Approaches area
(Quadrants 6 – 21).
Petroleum systems of the Orcadian study area that involve significant Palaeozoic elements are
not wholly contained within Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian strata. A number of
producing fields attest to two main proven petroleum systems;
i. Co-sourced Devonian oil (with Jurassic oil) within a Jurassic reservoir: the Beatrice,
Jacky and Lybster fields;
ii. Jurassic-sourced oil in a Devonian and/or Carboniferous reservoir: the Buchan, Stirling,
Claymore, Highlander fields. (Jurassic-sourced oil in a Permian (Zechstein) reservoir is
also proven in the Carnoustie, Ettrick and Claymore fields, and in a Rotliegend reservoir
in the Dee discovery).
A number of additional unproven petroleum system elements are considered in this report;
i. Possibilities for Devonian and Carboniferous sourcing or co-sourcing (with Jurassic oil)
of Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian (Rotliegend) reservoirs in those areas
underlain by proven Palaeozoic source rock;
ii. Possibilities for migrated Jurassic and/or Devonian and/or Carboniferous hydrocarbons
onto horst blocks and the regional Grampian High, into basement, Palaeozoic or younger
reservoirs.
Focusing on frontier areas north and east of the Inner Moray Firth and from the north-eastern
Forth Approaches to Grampian High, integration of a large volume of seismic, well, geophysical,
organic geochemistry, maturity and reservoir property data at regional scale has established:
Source rocks
A wide extent of potential Devonian lacustrine source rocks mapped seismically from the
Inner Moray Firth to the East Orkney Basin and north of the Halibut Horst.
Geochemically-typed Devonian-sourced oil shows, oil seep data outside the area of
mature Kimmeridge Clay Formation, burial depth and a limited organic
geochemistry/maturity dataset indicative of Devonian source rocks that are potentially
mature for oil generation outside the Inner Moray Firth.
Good quality gas- and oil-prone Carboniferous source rocks are mapped from the Witch
Ground Graben to north eastern end of the Forth Approaches. Wells drilled on highs
indicate oil-window thermal maturity levels. Oil and gas shows and basin modelling
indicate Carboniferous strata buried more deeply in adjacent basins may reach gas
maturity levels, with Cenozoic maturation.
Key source rock intervals are:
o Lower Devonian, lacustrine Struie Formation (Quadrants 11, 12), oil prone.
o Middle Devonian, lacustine Orcadia Formation and Eday Group (Quadrants 11-
15 and possibly Quadrants 19, 20), oil prone.
o Visean – Namurian (lower-mid Carboniferous) fluvio-deltaic Firth Coal
Formation, gas and oil prone. (This unit is age-equivalent of the Scremerston and
Yoredale Formations, Cleveland Group source rocks in Quadrants 25-44
