The Path To Assessing Library Instruction: Using Project Management Techniques to Guarantee Results

    Get PDF
As librarians begin to search for methods of assessing library instruction, they may feel overwhelmed and unsure of which path to take. A common problem is finding a sustainable method of assessment that can be easily realized. This presentation will detail one librarian’s experience using project management techniques to successfully propose and implement the use of an audience response system (clickers) to assess library instruction at Michigan State University. Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals and objectives while adhering to classic project constraints—usually scope, quality, time and budget. A project is defined as a set of activities that use resources (i.e. people, materials, energy, communication, motivation) to achieve the project goals and objectives. In this session attendees will learn how to plan, organize and manage available resources to reach the goal of successfully implementing a method of assessment

Properties and Action of Tn3 Resolvase

Under standard in vitro reaction conditions resolvase-mediated recombination is strictly intramolecular, acting only on supercoiled substrates with 2 directly repeated res sites to generate singly linked catenated products. These unique properties are not explicable by random collision of the res sites, making the mechanism of site synapsis an intriguing problem. This study has attempted to distinguish between a number of proposed models for site synapsis. A wide range of multiple re3 site constructs were made and the resolution characteristics examined. The results cannot be accounted for by the 'tracking' model for synapsis, based on 1-dimensional diffusion of resolvase along the DNA intervening between the 2 res sites. The resolution characteristics of these multiple res site plasmids are explicable by a 'pairing model' which arises as a natural consequence of the '2-step' model for site synapsis; the bias against non-adjacent events can be explained if there is a tendency to maximise the number of synapsed sites and if there are conformational difficulties in forming more than one non-adjacent synapse. The bias can be relieved by increasing the number of intervening sites; non-adjacent events can occur at a frequency equal to adjacent events when the recombining sites are separated by 2 intervening sites on either side. Inverted sites have been shown to cause 'shadowing' in the same way as directly repeated sites. Methylation protection experiments have shown resolvase recognises and binds to each of the 6 half sites of res in essentially the same way, making major groove interactions with bases of the concensus sequence. Photofootprinting results also imply a similar mode of resolvase binding at each subsite and a similar although not identical pattern of changes in the base stacking and helix geometry at the centres of each of the subsites. It is proposed that these changes represent resolvase-induced bending of the res site DNA. These resolvase-induced changes in base photoreactivity are also detected in in vivo photofootprinting experiments

The effects of visual condition, age and gender on postural control.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influences of three visual conditions on postural control among young and older adults and between males and females. The visual conditions were: eyes closed; eyes open with constant visual fixation; and eyes open with random visual fixation. Older adults demonstrated a significantly greater magnitude of lateral sway than younger adults, substantiating an age-related deterioration in postural control. Also, normalized data supported an age-related difference. Males demonstrated significantly greater lateral sway than females. This difference was not noted when lateral sway was normalized to support base width. No statistically significant gender-related differences were noted for antero-posterior sway. The visual contribution to postural control was the same for younger and older adults and for males and females. Constant visual fixation was the condition which provided the most stabilization for all groups. All groups demonstrated a destabilizing effect in the lateral plane of sway for random visual fixation and for eyes closed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)Dept. of Kinesiology. Factors Influencing Health Career Choices During Clinicians’ First Three Years in Practice

Background: Health systems globally need more clinicians to work rurally and in community-based primary care. This study explores factors influencing health graduates’ choice of clinical setting and geographical location during early careers, across a range of disciplines that work together to support the health of people in community-based and rural locations. Methods: Students from eight disciplines (n = 611) were recruited prior to their final year of pre-registration training. Data were collected via three electronic surveys completed at the end of participants’ first, second, and third year of clinical practice. Data were managed and analyzed with Template Analysis.Findings: Similar factors influenced clinical setting and location choice but differed in relative importance for each. The nature of the job itself was the most important factor influencing clinical setting choices. A broader range of influences were important to geographical location choices including personal reasons, the nature of the job, the nature of the location, and job availability and opportunities. Regulatory or training requirements limited choices available to some clinicians, particularly those from medicine. Conclusion: A range of complex and interacting factors influenced health graduates’ career choices. Findings indicate that a broad system-wide approach is needed to address community and rural health workforce needs

A multinational online survey of the goal setting practice of rehabilitation staff with stroke survivors with aphasia

Purpose: Goal setting is an essential rehabilitation activity. However, multidisciplinary rehabilitation staff goal-setting practice with stroke survivors with aphasia and associated training needs are not well understood. Methods: We designed, piloted, and conducted a survey of stroke rehabilitation staff in the UK, Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada, Ireland. Analysis included descriptive statistics, chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests, and qualitative content analysis. Results: We received 251 responses from 118 SLTs and 133 non-SLTs. Most reported setting goals with most or all people with aphasia (78%, 197/251); 57% (138/244) rarely or never provided an accessible copy of goals. All disciplines reported significantly less confidence setting goals with people with aphasia than without aphasia (p = 0.012, n = 119). Barriers to goal setting included the communication impairment (especially severe aphasia) and poor insight. Staff described feeling ill-equipped to support people with aphasia in goal setting; only 27% (67/251) had accessed training to do so. Conclusions: Rehabilitation staff described involving stroke survivors with aphasia in goal setting but lacked confidence doing so and receive inadequate training and support. Training should target multidisciplinary staff confidence and communication support strategies and resources so that people with aphasia and families are supported as goal-setting partners
