DNA methylation at tobacco telomeric sequences

Get PDF
Majerová et al. (Plant Mol Biol, 2011) have recently reported that a considerable fraction of cytosines at tobacco telomeres is methylated. Although the data presented in this report indicate that tobacco telomeric sequences undergo certain levels of DNA methylation, it is not clear whether the methylated sequences are at telomeres, at internal chromosomal loci or at both

The neotype of the type species of the neotropical iguanian genus Phymaturus : a critical commentary on a recent opinion of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature

Get PDF
The fundamental weakness of the Opinion 2118 (Case 3225) of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature is discussed. A former documented research established the Teiid identity of Lacerta palluma Molina 1782, a misidentified type species of the Iguanian genus Phymaturus, now confirmed by the Opinion. The holotype of the iguanian synonym Centrura flagellifer (Bell, 1843) is proposed as neotype of Phymaturus palluma (Molina, 1782), the misidentified type species of Gravenhorst 1837. Such a neotype should be named Phymaturus flagellifer (Bell, 1843) in agreement to the real taxonomic position of the Molina’s species, a Teiid Callopistes, a lacertilian genus strikingly distant from the iguanid genus Phymaturus. SECISaln, a web-based tool for the creation of structure-based alignments of eukaryotic SECIS elements

Get PDF
Summary: Selenoproteins contain the 21st amino acid selenocysteine which is encoded by an inframe UGA codon, usually read as a stop. In eukaryotes, its co-translational recoding requires the presence of an RNA stem–loop structure, the SECIS element in the 3 untranslated region of (UTR) selenoprotein mRNAs. Despite little sequence conservation, SECIS elements share the same overall secondary structure. Until recently, the lack of a significantly high number of selenoprotein mRNA sequences hampered the identification of other potential sequence conservation. In this work, the web-based tool SECISaln provides for the first time an extensive structure-based sequence alignment of SECIS elements resulting from the well-defined secondary structure of the SECIS RNA and the increased size of the eukaryotic selenoproteome. We have used SECISaln to improve our knowledge of SECIS secondary structure and to discover novel, conserved nucleotide positions and we believe it will be a useful tool for the selenoprotein and RNA scientific communities

Remote spectral imaging with simultaneous extraction of 3D topography for historical wall paintings

Get PDF
PRISMS (Portable Remote Imaging System for Multispectral Scanning) is designed for in situ, simultaneous high resolution spectral and 3D topographic imaging of wall paintings and other large surfaces. In particular, it can image at transverse resolutions of tens of microns remotely from distances of tens of metres, making high resolution imaging possible from a fixed position on the ground for areas at heights that is difficult to access. The spectral imaging system is fully automated giving 3D topographic mapping at millimetre accuracy as a by-product of the image focusing process. PRISMS is the first imaging device capable of both 3D mapping and spectral imaging simultaneously without additional distance measuring devices. Examples from applications of PRISMS to wall paintings at a UNESCO site in the Gobi desert are presented to demonstrate the potential of the instrument for large scale 3D spectral imaging, revealing faded writing and material identification

In the present work, we have realized a gonioscopic study in 46 Spanish Water's Dogs. We have seen an iridocorneal angle always open in all quadrants and we have noticed different structures of the iridocorneal angie. the two rows of fibres of the pectinate ligament, the uveal trabecular meshwork with the Fontana's spaces and the deep and superficial pigrnent bands. The iridocorneal angle of the Spanish Water's Dog does not exhibit peculiar characteristics for this race. We have observed large differences between eyes of different dogs, lesser differences between the eyes of the same dog, and rares differences between the different quadrants of the same eye. We have found that the degree of pigmentation of the structures of iridocorneal angle does not depend of the age, only of the pigmentation of the coat and iris

L’espèce-type du genre Phymaturus Gravenhorst, 1838 (Reptilia, Sauria)

Get PDF
The misidentification of type species in the original description of Phymaturus palluma Gravenhorst, 1838 led to the discovery that Lacerta palluma Molina, 1782 is really a senior synonym of Callopistes maculatus Gravenhorst, 1838. Thus, in agreement with the opinion of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, Callopistes palluma (Molina, 1782) was proposed as a valid taxon, being the type species of Callopistes. Also the validity of Teius oculatus (d’Orbigny et Bibron, 1837) instead of Teius teyou auctorum is here confirmed, being restricted the taxon Teius teyou (Daudin, 1802) to the formerly named Teius cyanogaster Muller, 1928. In the case of the genus Phymaturus Gravenhorst, 1838, in agreement with the art. 70b of the Code 1985 (Int. Comm. Zool. Nomencl.), the taxon Phymaturus flagellifer (Bell, 1843) new combination is proposed.
