An Experimental Study on the Influence of Soundscapes on People’s Behaviour in an Open Public Space
Several studies have investigated how environmental sounds and music can modulate
people’s behaviours, particularly in marketing research. However, there are relatively few examples
of research about such relationships with a focus on the management of urban public spaces.
The current study investigated an open public space used mainly as a pedestrian crossing to analyse
the relationship between the audio stimuli and peoples’ behaviours. An experiment relying on
covert behavioural observation was performed. During the experiment, three different music stimuli
and a control condition (i.e., no music) were reproduced in order to find out firstly whether music
compared to no music could elicit an increase in the number of people stopping in the investigated
area, and secondly whether music is associated with a longer duration of stay for those who stop.
Results showed that the presence of music had no effect on the number of people stopping in the area,
but it had a statistically significant effect on the duration of stay for those who stopped. The above
findings support the idea that people felt more invited to stay in the area with music rather than with
no music, and suggest that the acoustical manipulation of the existing sound environment could
provide soundscape strategies capable of promoting social cohesion in public spaces
DGLinker: flexible knowledge-graph prediction of disease-gene associations
As a result of the advent of high-throughput technologies, there has been rapid progress in our understanding of the genetics underlying biological processes. However, despite such advances, the genetic landscape of human diseases has only marginally been disclosed. Exploiting the present availability of large amounts of biological and phenotypic data, we can use our current understanding of disease genetics to train machine learning models to predict novel genetic factors associated with the disease. To this end, we developed DGLinker, a webserver for the prediction of novel candidate genes for human diseases given a set of known disease genes. DGLinker has a user-friendly interface that allows non-expert users to exploit biomedical information from a wide range of biological and phenotypic databases, and/or to upload their own data, to generate a knowledge-graph and use machine learning to predict new disease-associated genes. The webserver includes tools to explore and interpret the results and generates publication-ready figures. DGLinker is available at https://dglinker.rosalind.kcl.ac.uk. The webserver is free and open to all users without the need for registration
The effects of the spontaneous presence of a spouse/partner and others on cardiovascular reactions to an acute psychological challenge
The presence of supportive others has been associated with attenuated cardiovascular reactivity in the laboratory. The effects of the presence of a spouse and others in a more naturalistic setting have received little attention. Blood pressure and heart rate reactions to mental stress were recorded at home in 1028 married/partnered individuals. For 112 participants, their spouse/partner was present; for 78, at least one other person was present. Women tested with a spouse/partner present showed lower magnitude systolic blood pressure and heart rate reactivity than those tested without. Individuals tested with at least one nonspousal other present also displayed attenuated reactivity. This extends the results of laboratory studies and indicates that the spontaneous presence of others is associated with a reduction in cardiovascular reactivity in an everyday environment; spouse/partner presence would appear to be especially effective for women.\ud

Toward Common Data Elements for International Research in Long-term Care Homes: Advancing Person-Centered Care
To support person-centered, residential long-term care internationally, a consortium of researchers in medicine, nursing, behavioral, and social sciences from 21 geographically and economically diverse countries have launched the WE-THRIVE consortium to develop a common data infrastructure. WE-THRIVE aims to identify measurement domains that are internationally relevant, including in low-, middle-, and high-income countries, prioritize concepts to operationalize domains, and specify a set of data elements to measure concepts that can be used across studies for data sharing and comparisons. This article reports findings from consortium meetings at the 2016 meeting of the Gerontological Society of America and the 2017 meeting of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics, to identify domains and prioritize concepts, following best practices to identify common data elements (CDEs) that were developed through the US National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Nursing Research's CDEs initiative. Four domains were identified, including organizational context, workforce and staffing, person-centered care, and care outcomes. Using a nominal group process, WE-THRIVE prioritized 21 concepts across the 4 domains. Several concepts showed similarity to existing measurement structures, whereas others differed. Conceptual similarity (convergence; eg, concepts in the care outcomes domain of functional level and harm-free care) provides further support of the critical foundational work in LTC measurement endorsed and implemented by regulatory bodies. Different concepts (divergence; eg, concepts in the person-centered care domain of knowing the person and what matters most to the person) highlights current gaps in measurement efforts and is consistent with WE-THRIVE's focus on supporting resilience and thriving for residents, family, and staff. In alignment with the World Health Organization's call for comparative measurement work for health systems change, WE-THRIVE's work to date highlights the benefits of engaging with diverse LTC researchers, including those in low-, middle-, and high-income countries, to develop a measurement infrastructure that integrates the aspirations of person-centered LTC

nuclear scattering by providing a link between the string model approach and a
statistical description. A key issue is the microcanonical treatment of

Life events and hemodynamic stress reactivity in the middle-aged and elderly
Recent versions of the reactivity hypothesis, which consider it to be the product of stress exposure and exaggerated haemodynamic reactions to stress that confers cardiovascular disease risk, assume that reactivity is independent of the experience of stressful life events. This assumption was tested in two substantial cohorts, one middle-aged and one elderly. Participants had to indicate from a list of major stressful life events up to six they had experienced in the previous two years. They were also asked to rate how disruptive and stressful they were, at the time of occurrence and now. Blood pressure and pulse rate were measured at rest and in response to acute mental stress. Those who rated the events as highly disruptive at the time of exposure and currently exhibited blunted systolic blood pressure reactions to acute stress. The present results suggest that acute stress reactivity may not be independent of stressful life events experience
Combined TRPC3 and TRPC6 blockade by selective small-molecule or genetic deletion inhibits pathological cardiac hypertrophy
Chronic neurohormonal and mechanical stresses are central fea-tures of heart disease. Increasing evidence supports a role forthe transient receptor potential canonical channels TRPC3 andTRPC6 in this pathophysiology. Channel expression for both is nor-mally very low but is increased by cardiac disease, and geneticgain- or loss-of-function studies support contributions to hypertro-phy and dysfunction. Selective small-molecule inhibitors remainscarce, and none target both channels, which may be useful giventhe high homology among them and evidence of redundant sig-naling. Here we tested selective TRPC3/6 antagonists (GSK2332255Band GSK2833503A; IC50,3–21 nM against TRPC3 and TRPC6) andfound dose-dependent blockade of cell hypertrophy signaling trig-gered by angiotensin II or endothelin-1 in HEK293T cells as well as inneonatal and adult cardiac myocytes. In vivo efficacy in mice andrats was greatly limited by rapid metabolism and high protein bind-ing, although antifibrotic effects with pressure overload were ob-served. Intriguingly, although gene deletion of TRPC3 or TRPC6alone did not protect against hypertrophy or dysfunction frompressure overload, combined deletion was protective, support-ing the value of dual inhibition.
