Approaching delivery as a service

This paper explores the new logistics business model of Delivery as a Service, a concept aiming at a more efficient, fast and customer-oriented practice, linking IT solution development, urban logistics operations, supply chain efficiency and new business models. Delivery as a Service (DaaS) is defined as a service-oriented delivery and business processes in line with customer expectations and needs in the on-demand economy. The approach of this paper is an industry report based on evidence collected in multiple exploratory European projects integrating ambitious and strategic findings on Internet of Things, urban planning, consolidation centres, transport optimisation, and clean vehicle use. It contributes to a future scenario of urban logistics business models

For a critique of neoliberal green economy a foucauldian perspective on ecological crisis and biomimicry

Este artículo pretende explorar cómo categorías foucaultianas como la biopolítica y la gubernamentalidad –tanto liberal como neoliberal– pueden arrojar nueva luz sobre las formaciones discursivas que en los últimos años han adquirido importancia, a saber, la economía verde y la biomimética. Mientras que el primero es un intento capitalista de incorporar el límite ambiental como nuevo terreno para la acumulación y la valorización, el último propone la imitación de los sistemas naturales para reducir los impactos ambientales negativos sin sacrificar el crecimiento económico. En suma, el artículo discute y critica las condiciones de posibilidad que permitieron que estas conceptualizaciones emergieran y funcionaran en las sociedades neoliberales contemporáneas.This article aims at exploring how Foucauldian categories such as biopolitics and governmentality – both liberal and neoliberal – can shed new light on discursive formations that have become mainstream in recent years, namely those of green economy and biomimicry. While the former is a capitalist attempt to incorporate the environmental limit as a new terrain for accumulation and valorization, the latter proposes the imitation of natural systems to reduce negative environmental impacts without sacrificing economic growth. Overall, the article discusses and criticizes the conditions of possibility that allowed these conceptualizations to emerge and function in contemporary neoliberal societies

Simulating the tail of the interference in a Poisson network model

Interference among simultaneous transmissions represents the main limitation factor for the capacity and connectivity of dense wireless networks. In this paper we provide efficient simulation laws for the tail of the interference in a simple wireless ad hoc network model. Particularly, we consider node locations distributed according to a Poisson point process and various classes of light-tailed fading distribution

Firms' Heterogeneity in Capital/Labor Ratios and Wage Inequality

This paper provides some empirical evidence and a theory of the relationship between residual wage inequality and the increasing dispersion of capital/labor ratios across firms. I document the increasing variance of capital/labor ratios across firms in the US labor market using Compustat data. I also show that the increase in the variance of capital/labor ratios across firms is related to the increasing variance of wages. To explain these empirical regularities I adopt a search model where firms differ in their optimal composition of capital between equipment and structure. As the relative price of equipment falls over time the distribution of capital/labor ratios becomes more dispersed across firms. In a frictional labor market this force generates wage dispersion among identical workers. In the model the increase in wage inequality is due only to job changers as they are randomly matched to an increasingly wide variety of jobs (capital/labor ratio). This feature of the model is consistent with recent evidence that indicates that the bulk of the increase in wage inequality took place between plants rather than within plants. Simple estimation of the model indicates that the dispersion of capital/labor ratios can explain up to one half of the total increase in residual wage inequality.wage inequality, capital intensity, search models

Restricted Mobility Improves Delay-Throughput Trade-offs in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

In this paper we revisit two classes of mobility models which are widely used to repre-sent users ’ mobility in wireless networks: Random Waypoint (RWP) and Random Direction (RD). For both models we obtain systems of partial differential equations which describe the evolution of the users ’ distribution. For the RD model, we show how the equations can be solved analytically both in the stationary and transient regime adopting standard mathematical techniques. Our main contributions are i) simple expressions which relate the transient dura-tion to the model parameters; ii) the definition of a generalized random direction model whose stationary distribution of mobiles in the physical space corresponds to an assigned distribution
