An Admirable Police Maintained: Evidence of Sanitary Practices at the New Windsor Cantonment

    Get PDF
An archaeological survey at the 1782-83 winter encampent of the Continental Army at New Windsor, New York, has revealed the presence of several large pits or depressions located some 250ft (76.2m) from the site of the soldiers\u27 huts. Test excavations and chemcial analysis of the soils have determined that these pits were utilized as latrines or necessaries. The land use pattern at the site, including the location of the soldiers\u27 huts and the delineation of use areas for trash disposal and necessaries, reflects the officers\u27 successful attempt to impose order and discipline on the troops

Expression of Oxidative Stress Regulators by Plants Used as Vegetative Noise Barriers upon Exposure to Road Transport Anthropophony

Recently, noise pollution has been recognized as a profound global issue with serious consequences for ecological, human, and animal health. Only one study has documented a health impact of noise on plants, noting expression of oxidative stress regulators to combat reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in plant cells. Anthropophony (human-generated sounds) is the major cause of noise pollution, particularly road transport anthropophony (RTA) from vehicles and traffic congestion. Two plant species, Buxus microphylla (Wintergreen boxwood) and Juniperus squamata (Flaky juniper), were selected based on their use as vegetative barriers to control RTA. A field recording of RTA and corresponding sound pressure level measurements were taken alongside the U.S. 101 freeway in Woodland Hills, CA. This recording was looped to exposed plants (n=5) through a studio monitor at 73.5 dBA (±1 %) for 24 hours in a soundproof room. Control plants (n=5) were left in silence in the soundproof room for 24 hours. Leaf tissue was harvested and analyzed via colorimetric UV/Vis spectrophotometry for total polyphenols, an oxidative stress regulator. It was hypothesized that RTA-exposed plants would express increased total polyphenols levels compared to non-exposed plants. The mean net total polyphenols content was not significantly different between exposed and control boxwoods (p = 0.998) or exposed and control junipers (p = 0.20 I). This indicates that RT A-exposed plants did not express increased total polyphenols levels. However, this study was the first to investigate potential adverse impacts of environmentally-relevant sound levels on plant species that may have a high daily noise pollution burden

    Anatomy of an Almshouse Complex

    Get PDF
The focus of this paper is to determine the age and function of a partial building foundation uncovered during archaeological testing in City Hall Park, New York City. The authors use evidence from historical maps, prints, and documents, as well as archaeological evidence, to determine the function of the building. The evidence suggests that the foundation is an outbuilding that was part of an 18th-century colonial almshouse complex. The foundation appears to be the remains of the almshouse kitchen

This study aims to determine and analyze the effect of the marketing mix consisting of price and product quality on the repurchase intention of Scarlett Whitening Body Lotion products in the city of Samarinda, either partially or simultaneously. The theory used in this research is marketing management, marketing concept, consumer behavior, factors that influence consumer behavior, price, product quality, and repurchase intention. The analytical tool used in this study consisted of a research instrument test consisting of a validity test and instrument reliability test, multiple linear regression analysis, coefficient of determination analysis, t test, and F test. The results showed that partially, product quality had a positive and significant effect on repurchase intention, while price did not have a significant effect on repurchase intention (Y) for Scarlett Whitening Body Lotion products in the city of Samarinda. Simultaneously, the marketing mix consisting of price and product quality has a significant effect on repurchasing interest in Scarlett Whitening Body Lotion products. This shows that the preferences of consumers who are respondents in this study in purchasing Scarlett Whitening Body Lotion products in the city of Samarinda are due to the quality of the product itself, where Scarlett Whitening Body Lotion is an indication that the performance quality of the Scarlett Whitening Body Lotion product itself has a scent. fragrant, soft and durable when consumers use it, thus reflecting good quality in accordance with consumer expectations. The price factor is not the main reason for consumers to make repeat purchases, indicating the possibility that consumers do have a transactional interest in repurchasing the Scarlett Whitening Body Lotion product or more because of the perception of the quality of the product

Powder Eutectic Materials of Fe-Mn-C-B System for Coatings of Increased Abrasive Wear

    Get PDF
In this chapter, selected problems of manufacturing coatings with high wear resistance obtained based on eutectic materials of the quaternary Fe-Mn-C-B system are discussed. With regard to the structural state and physico-mechanical properties of eutectic powder alloys and coatings correspond to the composite dispersion-strengthened materials. The formation of a hardened layer with the structure of eutectic on the metal surface is the creation of a new material with certain mechanical properties. The analysis of different material properties and of alloy addition enabled to work out new eutectic powder alloys based on iron of the Fe-Mn-C-B system. In particular, it enabled to determine eutectic ranges and element contents

Conductometric determination of naproxen in bulk and pharmaceutical dosage form

    Get PDF
This study aimed at the development of simple and cheap conductometric method that can be used for the determination of naproxen in bulk and dosage forms. During the study, naproxen was titrated with sodium hydroxide (Method A) and potassium hydroxide (Method B) and the end points were determined with conductivity cell. Variables affecting the end point determination were also studied in the range of 1-10 mg/mL of naproxen. The proposed methods were validated by precision and recovery studies. The percentage recoveries ranged from 99.15±0.659 and 101.13±0.543 with % RSD of 0.897 and 0.749 with sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, respectively. The methods were effectively applied for the determination of naproxen in tablet dosage form. The methods proposed in this study can be used as substitute for more composite and classy methods used for the determination of naproxen and are highly reproducible as compared to other reported methods
